Title: Mom's Ultra REBUILD ! ! !
Post by: 19ftCheyenne on October 24, 2012, 07:10:27 PM
Yup my mom is finally making me do it.. Not positive on the exact year but we have it registered as a 2001 (year we bought the boat). We purchased it from a police auction minus the front seats, gauges and a motor. We got a motor in it and made some front seats and used the boat for a couple years. It did 55 mph and rode like a cadillac, THEN the bad news. My mom and sister eneded up parking it at there place uncovered for a while and long story short it filled up with water and rotted out the seat frames in the front and the floor.. Ill post more pics later, here is one I took tonight . This thing is going to get paint, interior, new floor, carpet, new stereo, gonna go through the motor which is a CHEVY of course 454, and has a 12jg pump with a hydraulic place diverter. Where and how often do you find stuff like this at auction. What you have there is what i want.

Looks like a mid 90s SS. They're good boats, same hull as mine. That one has more storage than mine and there's no rear facing seats behind the driver and passenger.

My Ultra project started out with a brown paper bag on the dash as well.

@ 5150whiteboy - Hell something like that with out a motor would do me just right. I need that hull (one similar) with no motor. Can use the 454 i have in my ultra and get rid of the rest for some cash to clean up the other one.

Did it have a good amount of green in the gel with milkshake oil and a missing back seat bottom? I saw one like it at long beach yacht sales.. sometimes they get cool river boats there that are either repos or confiscations by law enforcement.

Looks like you've got your hands full.  Are you gutting it bear and flipping it, or are you going to paint it on the trailer?  As far as suggestions, I suggest you buy your mom a boat cover for Christmas.

No ideas on colors yet, Im sure it will come to me. I want something bright !!! Something fun I can go wild with hahah.. I have a couple ideas on updating the interior with more beer holders and just a much newer look overall . Big johson I like the idea of getting rid of the teak looking storage cover and making a carpted one.. And the bottom of the boat is actually really nice white gel coat, and theres a body line that I can just paint right above on so I can avoid trying to flig this big ol thing.. Still not sure if I want to cap this boat or leave mom and sister with a little bumber haha .

My idea would be a basic white with HOC candy tangerine (love this color) on a silver base.  Use silver/titanium, black and maybe a purple or bright lime green, all in metallic, as accent  stripes.  I want to do a day cruiser I'm building in similar colors, but wife doesn't like any orange.  As far as rub rail vs cap, I like the look of a cap but if your mom and sister are like most of us and don't drive it like a show piece, I'd do a rub rail.  Custom paint jobs are normally a bitch to repair and look like shit if the are all chipped up.

Check out west coast marine interior's photo gallery. They have an ss style Ultra like your mom's.

They go all out, make the bow seating area larger... Good to look at for ideas.

No I have them both why?  The woods super water logged on both of them though.. You can see both of the seats on my very fist pic I posted on here..  Next step for me is to pull the motor and rip out the entire floor and build a new one, then move on to re-making all the seat frames and side panels and so on..

I'd through bolt the swimstep brackets at the top in case a big boy climbs up the back.

I used some 1/4 aluminum for backing.

Cause I have one I was gonna make a office chair out of , but I lost interest and it has been on the shelf in the garage for the last 5 years. And in one of your pic's it looked like one was missing.

whats the little mr gasket fuel pump for?  theres a mechanical pump on it too...

then the clear tube that goes from the front of the intake manifold back into the intake manifold?  is that just to see theres water flowing or something?

My southwind was set up just like this. There was a toggle switch for the electrical pump under the dash. I found when the electrical pump was not running, it struggled to idle at times. I assume the mechanical pump might not have enough draw on bigger boats with bigger tanks. The electrical pump helps prime the carb too.

Haha I just noticed the clear tube, not sure what the purpose was on that.. And from what I remember the fuel system starts from the tank lines and goes to a fuel tank selector (elec) and then to a small elec pump then to the mechanical pump.. And Like Brad said the small elec pump is used to help prime the mechanical pump..

Anyone know how painting the exhaust manifolds/water logs would hold up?

Im sure powder coating would be stronger but that costs money  haha.. I guess theres only one way to find out  :screwy:.. I think im going the same route on this as I did the scorpion, No chrome and no polished alum. Ill paint as much as I can and powder coat what I have too..

Thanks for all the comments, questions, and input.. Sometimes with a build this major the small things can pass you by fast, so keep all the input coming GOOD OR BAD ..

Just use high temp engine paint. The logs don't get that hot at all , you can put coolers and life jackets right up against them and not melt them.

Ok cool, ya I didnt think they got that hott... I havent messed around with metal flake much in my day but I think its time I give it a go!!! For some reason im picturing semi-gloss black logs and glossy red metal flake snails !! haha   ??   I did take a couple of shots after work so be honest  ;D

Depending on how crazy you are going to get with the flake, you will have to drill out the tip in your spray gun nozle( just buy a cheapo HF gun a ruin it) and it will take a ton of clear. I say give it a shot Flake is bitchin

Try to keep whatever plywood for seats and bases in tact so you'll have patterns.

Yup, saving it all so I can just trace it out.. Saving all the trick cut out carpet pieces too so I can copy those as well...  This things moving along pretty smooth, I brought home a engine stand from work so I can pull the motor next week. I should have the whole boat gutted by next weekend ( motor, gauges, steering, floor, swim steps, bow light and rails ). Hey Big Johnson word on the block is that you have a hook up on carpet? How much do you think im looking at in material to carpet the whole boat? Ill install it, just trying to get a feel for what everythings gonna be costing on this build. I decided to go with the rub rail too  this things going to be a party machine haha..
