so....after 200 years, i finally am able to start digging into my boa......basket case.
89 ultra mini day cruiser.
3rd pic is what i stared at for many months....until today 5th & 6th pic....looks like mold started to grow underneath the floor....yumm
ending with the final pic....after floor removed, hull vacuumed of rotted wood and water, glass dust etc.
next task is to grind lip where floor was glassed to hull. and possibly do some splicing of stringers....i dont remember the technical term form this.
transom is rotted also...particularly on port side, starboard side is soaked but solid...may end up replacing it all....basket case.
i think engine was a bbc....not sure, but its getting a bbf. nothing fancy, but its what i got. berk JC with A impy.

news for today:
port side stringer shot....the first quarter of it from transom, when i opened up the top looked like wood charcoal. everything was broken up in pieces and dry. moving forward from there....wood got a bit more wet. right about where drivers feet would be it got a bit solid....only to turn to mush after about a foot.
starboard side is solid.....tho i did remove the stringer
3/4 of transom was shot. from port side to just past the starboard side exhaust hole.
the bottom piece of transom where lower screws are for T/A....was cut too low. screws had little/nothing to grab onto. had to perform surgery from outside to access and remove the wood there as water has been able to move from side to side underneath it. ill replace the wood and re-glass that section from the outside and have my local painter work his magic. i dont have pics of this section.
last pic is after wood has been removed and cleaned up. still have a day of grinding left to do before i break out the resin..... :beer:

didnt get to spend much time with my basket case today. i did however continued with transom. shaving the wood that was still stuck to glass(which sucked....i was tempted to buy a small planer and make passes until i hit glass...) and sanding down the rest until i hit glass. now should be ready to fit new wood and set it in place.

I chose not to. about a quarter of transom was still dry and solid and very stuck to the outer layer if glass. It was tough getting to the point where I stopped. The rest of wood was soon bad it basically came off with me rubbing my hand over it. What you see in pic is all that's being replaced. Entry point for water was at exhaust hole which may have gone down to stringer and ruin it too....and bottom edge of t/a. Which those screws has nothing to hold it in place as wood there was cut down too low....a leak was enevitable.
It'll take the better half a a sheet of plywood. Cut in 2 pieces to be able to fit it in place. Mt intake is still in Hull....I don't plan on removing it.

U might want to block off old exhaust holes and go with ot headers will help with less through holes

Man, that is a lot of work.
Are you going to soak the plywood in resin to help protect it? How are you going to join the pieces of plywood?

I did consider ot headers. haven't made that choice yet. I did plan on using an engine cover...hatch etc.
As far as the pieces of wood....the plywood will get a bath in resin. Then I'll mix up more resin and chopped fibers to make a paste. I'll use that to glue new wood to glass on transom. The wood seams will be cut at an angle so the edges overlap. Within those edges will be more resin paste (pokey).
once wood is in place with the pokey, I'll clamp it against existing transom. Let it cure. afterwards... I'll dress up any pokey that squished out of the seams. And prep for layer of glass on inside of Hull. if I'm lucky...I'll be at the point where wood and clamps are on today.

I drilled through my transom and fiberglass and used metal on the outside to clamp it tight have to be tight all around don't want any air trapped behind I just right angle steel and long bolts and did about 5 different spots

well. ive done quite a bit of work since last post....only it does feel like it shows. on top of that....my smart phone took a dump....so no pics, numbers, etc. currently using a dumber smart phone. no camera. but who doesnt have digital cameras laying around, right? i bring one with me to snap a few....end up working til dark or rushing off to work....no pics. i managed to snag this one. not the greatest...
transom wood installed. glued and clamped. layer of csm and cloth applied, tabbed to hull. the small piece of wood underneath intake was replaced...this was tricky by the way....new glass was laid to build up area to level of transom(water side of transom).

sorry man...not sure how i missed this.
tahiti is in storage. all running gear, seats, etc will be transferred over to the basket case....when its finished, ill decide if i wanna put stringers and floor in tahiti and sell it....less engine, and interior, and what ever else is missing. ive got another pump for it....ill include that. plus tandem trailer.

so. minor set back. turns out the stringer i was gonna leave it...was pretty wet. resin at scarf joint didnt stick well. so i looked for the nearest bullet and bit it.
stringer pulled!
it was a good call, as front of stringer had some rot. not much....but....while im here...... i mean transom, port stringer and floor has been/ or getting replaced....why pinch that dollar for the starboard stringer.....
old stringer came out in one piece....so i was able to use it as a template. made things go by quicker. i was able to pull old stringer, go buy new wood, cut new wood to shape and grind hull to prep for install in about 4.5hrs.....in this stupid ass heat....wearing this stupid ass suit....that makes my stupid fat ass sweat like no other. haha.
very sorry....no pics. i will take them first thing tomorrow so i have something to share.

sorry man...didnt mean to ignore you...
yes. plywood got a layer of resin prior to installation. two in fact. first one, had some areas that soaked in more than others....i gave it a bit of a sand and another coat. as far as the two pieces of wood...well....of the original transom wood, only about a quarter was good. still very adhered to glass and very solid.
any and all of the rotted or rotting wood, was removed. this exposed the transom fiberglass, which was sanded. the new plywood went on in three parts. at the seam of each was a bevel cut so they overlapped...maybe not needed....but there. to install i mixed up some peanut butter...resin, cabosil and chopped fibers to a thick, peanut buttery consistency...and used it as a glue, i spread it on transom and new wood, extra thick on seams. installed new wood. then clamped new wood to transom. all peanut butter that squeezed out was spread over seam....or shaped to create a fillet. after all cured...i gave it a quick sand, to remove any stray strands from peanut butter, leaving a smooth finish...then a layer of mat and cloth over the whole transom, tabbing into the hull.
thats where i stopped.

so...here are a couple pics of stringers as they sit. fillets are just about complete....i need another quick pass to smooth out the fillet. then on to glassing over stringer to hull.
notice, the little cut out to allow water to drain into bilge from outside of stringer new engine....

Looks great bud! Sucks you had to replace the whole other stringer but well worth it to know it's solid! As I said before if I'm not at work I'm willing to help would be a learning experience for me as well

managed to put in a little time with the basket case. got to put down a couple layers of glass over the stringers.
soon....ill be laying down the floor.
for some reason, in my mind.....floor going in is home stretch....even tho in reality.....SOOO much more is needed.
setting the engine for one..... im told engine should be tilted back some, 3 degrees or so. this is measured from the crank. so id need a 460 block and crank....to use as a mock up.
anyone have ideas where to get those items? my engine is complete....is there a way to use a completed engine instead of bare block and crank? ???

well....im looking at my floor.....in the bed of my truck. :-\
suddenly work took off....everyone was putting on shows....
i had a moment to give it some love today....little more prep work. little more glass work...well.....more like prep work. the glass part is only 10% of work.
id post pics....but....it still looks the same.
