hey guys. New to scjb and pretty new to jet boats as well. I picked up a 73 kona about 3 weeks ago for a new project. its got the 455 olds with edelbrock carb and logs. motor is pretty stock otherwise ( according to previous owner). i took it out 2 weeks ago to havasu and the thing ran bitchin. did have a heat up problem going through the channel but what can you do with all that moss. anyway im looking to start making the boat into my ideal boat. i took all the seats out yesterday as they were ripped and torn and the wood was completely rotted. im going to change pretty much everything over, guages, wheel, seats, color, and of coarse paint the motor :D. im looking for some ideas on all this stuff. also i need some swim steps for the back of the boat. i'll post some pics of what it looked like the day i got it and you guys tell me what you think please. thanks. i heard that the kona's were pretty popular boat in the 70s

Welcome to the boards, nice looking project.
The Kona's are cool boats. You will have fun with it. With a bit of work and good bit of power, they can be made to run pretty fast. The second time out after My resto I saw 86.6 mph on the hand held GPS, I had to keep lifting due to fairly dirty water. I know that with some more hardware changes and some more tuning, that it had more in it. I had alot of fun building mine!

wow man thats a really clean boat. i hope to have mine lookin half as good as that. im only 21 and dont have a lot of income but harrd work will hopefully pay off. i have a couple questions if you dont mind. my biggest thing right now is a spot to mount my battery. the guy before had it on a little plate right by the logs on the right side with a bungee cord hold ing it down. :-\ i saw how you mounted yours but it slopes down as you know, so did you level it somehow ! are you running a single battery or dual. also im gonna be getting it ready for paint. do i just start sanding it down little by little. theres no gel coat on it its more of a rough surface. i just ordered a bunch of stuff from cp performace to make it look nice with guages and anodized stuff also some stuff i needed like a bilge pump and electronics. any info would help aa lot. i will definately have your thread locked in my computer ffor help. great job on your boat again man

That was a nice boat till an illegal hit it and then ran from the scene...On the batts I did a simple diamond plate custom tray on both sides

Welcome, I grew up around this Kona and almost bought one myself. Good boat, there are a bunch out there for ideas on paint and interior. Keep the progress pics coming and ask any questions along the way.

hey guys. thanks for all the welcomes and advice. sorry to hear about hals kona. will he be building a new one ? i got some stuff done yesterday on it. got the seats out, side molding is all off and managed to get the logs off the motor. none of those bolts were tight which concerned me. looks like all hoses need to be changed as there melted and cracking. i was thinking of building two trays for the batteries and leveling them with big bolts so i can adjust them. my question is mounting them. do i mount them with screws down in the bottom or all the way against the back like a side mount ? i bought a dual battery switch the other day to control the batteries so im not left stranded in the middle of the lake with a dead battery like last summer. yesterday while taking off the molding i noticed theres a split in the boat all the way around. is that normal ? ill be working on it most of the day and getting more pictures up. i think since i have it torn down im going to replaced the carpet and take a look at the wood. might as well go big or go home.

That boat belongs to my folks and it now lives in Havasu, we just took it out over the holiday on the lake and it looks and feels like it just came off the showroom floor.
Don't over look the fuel tank, since you have it stripped down you might want to pull the tank and check it. They split around the hull is from the manufacturing process, that's where the top and bottom we matted. They don't usually finish the outside since they add the rub rail all the way around, some guys will remove the rail and have the hull capped which is having the gap finished and smoothing the out the line. As for the battery mount, I just relocated mine to the gunnel area outside of my stringer. I will snap a pic when I get a chance for another idea.

I know you are trying to keep a budget but you will appreciate gel coat more than paint, we have rebuilt a few boats and automotive paint can be delicate when climbing in and out of your boat. Gel coat is very durable, but can be expensive to have done. JMO

yeah i thought about the gas tank as well. probably start pulling that today. ive been talking to a few people about paint and there all telling me that paint will cost three times as much as the boat is even worth >:( there suggesting looking around for a hull that is painted already and transferring my parts into that boat. what do you guys think ?

I'm not sure what paint or gel is going to cost but I know it's not cheap. This is all up to you and how far you want to take it, you can probably find another hull in better shape and come out cheaper in the end( "cheaper" is a loose term when talking about boats). Are you really into this hull? Depending on your budget you can build it for this season and keep an eye out for another hull to swap into.

took this off to polish up and replace water lines. it was pretty bad but i enjoy making things like this look new again. safe to say everything i can will be polished on this motor when finished. ;D what exactly is this ? i know its a plate for the water into the block but when i pulled this off, nothing but rust. i need a new gasket for it. anybody know what is called so i can get a new gasket for it ?
@yourmom. i like the way that looks with the diamond plate but my hull slopes down in the back so my batteries would be aat an angle. I want to come up with something to make them level like an angled piece to put down in the corner to level it.
@haulsballs. i think im just gonna fill the small holes from the rub railing sand it down a little and primer it for this season and maybe look for a painted kona for next year just to swap out with. i thinking of some wet sanding to get it smooth then a primer and be done. my main focus for this year is going to be the motor and jet. i have a berkley jet pump but needs a rebuild. it squeeks at idle so im thinking it needs to be rebuilt.

That's your water pump cover, in a car there would be a water pump in that location instead of that cover.
Rebuilding your pump is always good insurance if you don't know when it was done last, you may even see more performance out it with fresh components. I did mine last year and it feels a hell of a lot better. I have the socket for the impellor and a few other tools if you ever need help tearing it down, but it's definitely something you should do yourself and save some coin.

okay cool. thanks man. im gonna tear the pump down today and check everything out. also i was thinking of painting my jet as its a little rough and needs it. will regular spray paint work on it or should i not even waste my time ? maybe getting a deal on another olds motor in better shape then mine and better parts. so if anybody wants my motor it will be complete ready to go (except carb needs rebuild ) with logs and transom exhaust. anybody wants it ill let it go cheap

Use appliance paint on the pump housing and other parts, you can grab a can or two from Home Depot. It's stronger than regular spray paint, plus it's cheap.

X2 on the appliance paint. Cheap and works well.
As far as mounting the battery, I think Ralph Brunt had a thread were he mounted a tray on the inside of the stringer, which came out real nice. You could build a level platform on the outside of the stringer, glass it in and then mount a tray to that.
How bad is the gelcoat? It might just need to be wetsanded. Some guys have really brought the shine back to a boat by just doing that.
The split down the side where the rubrail goes, is normal. It's called capping the hull when that area is filled in. But most guys grind it out a little and lay glass down.
What are your plans for the boat?
The kona is a good hull. There are other hulls out there that are faster and handle rough water better. That is probably the reason guys are telling you to not put too much
into this hull. If you dump a lot of money and time into this hull, you might be disappointed if you try to sell for what you got into. But then again this is true with all boats ;D.
If you do a search, you'll find answers and ideas to what you've asked plus, most any question you got.

hey guys. Got some more parts yesterday ;D got some really nice rewarder headers with water lines, new throttle cable, new exhaust gaskets, and a comp cam 490 lift ;D thanks to jim at cyclone speed and marine for the parts and definately the advice ! great guy.
thanks for the info troller dave and haulsballs. Im gonna go grab so paint today for the jet and maybe get to it today. tomorrow the motor is finally coming out ! ive been told many times that boat stand for bring on another thousand. i can see that is more then true. im thinking of capping the hull ? is it hard to do ? im gonna look at that thread today and get ideas for the batteries and some ideas on motor set up.

finally got the motor out today ;D noticed a lot of cleaning and maintanence was not the previous owners thing. also making things work, instead of doing it the right way was not in this guys mind. oh well this is a project right ? got the motor out and sending it to the shop on tuesday. Im gonna replace all of the hoses and lines as the look worn out and dry. as i was pulling the startor off it slipped out of my hand from the grease and fell right on the floor cracking it :banghead: so guess i gotta get a new one.
hopefully my parts show up today or tomorrow so i can replace my guages and all that. gonna start color sanding this week and see if i can bring it back. gotta attach the pump as well and replace the wax ropes on the shaft.
Got a lot to do but plentyy of time :P i will be posting a lot of pics as well for advice. also if anybody wants or needs a set of logs with transoms all the way out let me know. getting rid of them.

How about a couple pics of the gel or maybe just the trouble spots. I was told that my boat needed paint when I brought it home but a weekend of wet sanding and polishing made the original gel come back and look great.
What's the plan for the engine? Refresh or are you going to add a few more horses? A fresh pump and reliable motor are always a good combo.

ill take some better pics of the paint today. its not a gel coat its a rough surface paint. kinda like it has grit to the paint so if your walking on it you dont slip. theres about three or four spots where its really light and damaged compared to the rest of the paint. i was told it was a popular color in the day. a rootbeer brown with a red flake.
As far as the motor, its going to be all gone through be the same guy that built my dads 406 sbc for his camaro. I bought a cam for it but its only a mild cam. 280 to 108 on a 490 lift. i believe stock is 450 or 460 ?? not sure on that though. im gonna have him set the motor up for that cam. so new lifters, valves, springs and decking everything. i think im gonna paint the block, black with everything else a chrome or satin finish. what do you guys think ?
Ill post some more pics today and maybe get down to wet sanding with a 3000 grit. still waiting for my parts from cp performance :sly:

engines should be black. everything else should be polished. O0
I like the engine black but just remember that polished=polishing and chrome will clean up much easier. Sounds like you have a lot of work to do, hope you can get this thing thrown back together for the season.

Got some pictures from yesterday of the paint. went to home depot and got some 600 grit wet sand paper and some appliance paint. started wet sanding a little bit yesterday. wet sanded the pump and taped off the fittings. i got so into painting i forgot to take a picture of it and its raining today :( since its raining im gonna wait til its not so bad and continue wet sanding. best time to get it done.
@mobboss. do you think you could put up a pic of where you mounted your battery ? if im gonna run two batteries i cant put them both inside the stringers so i need to mount them outside of them.
polishing is a stress reliever for sure. i constantly polish the rims on my truck so they continue to look brand new. blue magic works the best on that stuff in my opiniion.
let me know what you guys think on the gel coat

sure no prob! gonna have to wait till after it stops raining. its all covered up. however mine is mounted in the back on the right hand side, in the corner .it looks like just a little table was made then resin was brushed over it.if your gell coat is in even semi decent shape , try to leave it. gell coat is way better than auto paint. still have the original gell coat on mine. its not perfect but does still look good.

cool thanks. yeah it just stopped raingin here so im gonna color sand some more. im thinking of just building a tray to level it and leaving it. as long as its safe and doesnt move around thats all im worried about.
as far as the gel coat im not even sure it is a gel coat. the surface is rough not smooth like a regular gel coat. its weird but after a little color sanding yesterday its smooth but no color change at all. :-\

where can i get sand paper like that. ive been to home depot and pepboys and all they have is 600 and 1000 grt. i asked the guy at pepboys and he said i might have to order online ???. did i hurt the gel by color sanding with 600 grt ? i only did the back of the boat. its smooth though.
Gonna get the motor set in my truck tonight and take it to the machine shop tomorrow ;D
Ive also been looking into putting an electric fuel pump on. ive seen a lot of people running those instead of the manual ones. good idea ??
also if anybody has any pictures on how to set up the water lines on basset headers for an olds please send them my way. i wanna be sure i have it right. thanks guys

all you did with 600 paper is create bigger scratches to get rid of . I would probably use 800 now before 1000 then 1500 then 2000 then 3000 then sheep wool pad then black foam pad then finish with a yellow foam pad.the beat place to get paper and supplies is an autobody supply shop.if you cant find one ask a local bodyshop who they deal with,i ordered all my paint and supplies from TCP Global in San Diego but I believe they also have retail stores in CAli. they are great to deal with and ship quick. :thumbup:

you can get the sand paper at any auto body supply type place I started a thread when I did mine I think I only did 1000 & 2000 then 3m finesse looks great ::)

okay guys. sorry ive been busy the last couple of days but i managed to get the carpet all out. middle floor was split in two and rotted same for the piece by the gas tank up front. got some new wood and new carpet yesterday from home cheapo. Gonna resin the wood and put some carpet in.
Now to the good stuff. i started color sanding some more yesterday and today with my dad and got the whole top done and buffed and waxed. i was surprised how good it came out ;D i still need to do the bottom and inside but at least i got a taste to whats to come.

thanks guys.
I started with 600 grit wet sand paper on the top and then finished with 1000 grit. used a buffer with rubbing compound first then used some wax with the buffer and finished it with a hand wax. i had to use 220 grit on the bottom since it was so bad. still some spots i need to work on.
Got some resin and carpet and finished the floor board and the piece up front by the gas tank. carpeted both of them and installed some old speakers we had from an old boat. it looks good. have a little more wet sanding to do and then i can put in the carpet and boards.
motor is coming along good. heads were in great shape. only thing is the bearings look at little spotted probably from water or fuel in there. gonna replace the rod bearings as well and put it all back together.
ill put up some pics later today or tomorrow for you guys

okay heres some pics.
also got some more news on the motor. heads are in great shape. bearings are gonna be changed out due to spotting real bad on rod bearings. oil to the cam is gonna be minimized allowing more oil to return. also found out the cam i bought is not a 490 but a 510 so new heavier springs are being put in. should give it a good thump :D motor should be done by next weekend so gotta kick it up a notch on getting things together.
also looking for some ideas on what colors to do the motor. im painting the block black but not sure what to paint the heads and intake. was gonna have them polished but due to funds i cant. if anybody wants to share some pics on the motors please send them. thanks guys

Awesome thread man im learning alot reading it and in same boat as you.. i also have a kona with 455 old.. in the middle of re carpeting and some how clean up the paint to bring the color back lol also having to replace both gas tanks whichh is not going to be cheap.. would like to see how you mount your batteries too.. im gonna run the same dual batteries on a switch.. looks goodman congrats and keep it up!

snapped some more pics today on the progresss. got my new guages, bevals, and forward reverse levers on. the guages look bitchin. also got my perko switch and bilge pump to put in. anybody have a good idea on where to mount my perko switch ??? got all the carpeting in yesterday. cleaned out the pump area with some mineral spirit and some soapy water to get some fresh paint on the paint. came out lookin good. got all my grade 8 bolts from king bolt on monday aand replaced all my motor mount bolts with stainless steel bolts and washers. took some wire loom and wrapped all my wiring up with it. motor should be here on tuesday next week :D

Cool man... ya mine is a 71 with dual side mounted tanks behind the seats so would have to get them custom made.. im wonderung if its an option for me to relocate my tanks up front... how was it carpeting it? One thing i have to do but dont k.ow if i wanna take the risk of it looking like crap haha..

i would think you could relocate the tanks if you have the room under your bow. mine is under it buts it sits in a square the size of the tank and glassed in. i could take a picture of it and post it for you to see. the carpet was easy. i took all my old pieces and used them as a template and grabbed my roll of new carpet and starting cutting them out. get some indoor\outdoor glue from home depot and lay it on. make sure you lay the glue down in the sun that way it gets tacky and sticks well. im still letting my boat sit in the sun to make sure the glue sets. but carpeting is easy and not that expensive to make your boat look like new.

still coming along on the boat. got some battery trays made up and ready to put in. just took some aluminum from the garage and starting measuring and cutting. its just a simple tray. ill post some pics up later today of them. got both the new steering cable and the forward\reverse cable in. also took some more aluminum and made a plak for the perko switch. motor should be here tomorrow.... hopefully :mad:
picked up a decent tandem trailer last week with brakes. got it for cheap so got to sanding and fixing yesterday. gonna throw some paint on it tomorrow.

the motor is finally back !!! ;D
Got it back last tuesday finally. wasnt really the color we discussed over the phone as i wanted an orange block with silver or satin heads and intake but i guess its okay looking. definately gonna swap the valve covers with chrome ones. anybody have a set for an olds ?? anyways got it all back. the rod bearing on number four was bad, all saved and gone. looks like the guy before me did not rebuild the motor last year. FIGURES ! oh well thats why its best to do everything over yourself for peace of mind right ? everything is pretty much new. all the mounts were polished up including the water pump cover and a few otherr things. got it in the boat on saturday and ready for me to start putting it together and back on the water 8)

got the headers on the other day. im loving the way its coming together ;D unfortunately got into a car accident on wedsneday and got some pinched nerves in my back. its killing me but still trying to get the wiring together to get it running today

managed to get the pulley belt alternator and all water lines hooked up this morning. still need to get it wired up including the gauges but laying on my back under there is not looking good :banghead:

still havent got it fired yet. my truck is being a ..... so ive trying to figure out that problem. got to working more on the boat this morning but sliced a good chunk of skin off my finger. looks like maybe some stiching is needed :banghead:
anyways does anyone have a polished scoop for a single carb. thats all i need to complete the build. anybody have one ???

well got everything back together and now having trouble getting it started. spent all week trying to figure it out. motor will turn over but wont fire. theres power getting to the coil and to the distributor but not to the wires. i went and bought an ignitor kit from pertronics to get rid of the points but still no luck. weève been scratching our heads :screwy: trying to figure this out. anybody have any ideas or had this problem ?

did you put the ends on the wires or were they factory set ends and did you replace the cap and rotor

ok this is going to sound stupid but have you watched to see if the rotor in the distributor is turn when you crank the motor???

Then check to see if the firing order is the correct rotation?
And dizzy was dropped in with #1 TDC?
Any spark out of the coil? (remote mount coil?)

i bought the wires already done and ready to go. the cap and rotor are the ones that were on there. the guy thats helping said they both look good.
mobboss : yeah its turning counter clockwise when it cranks.
mash on it : firing order is correct. when re did all that a couple times last night. cranked it til it spit on number one and dropped in the dizzy towards one and nothing. we have spark in the coil and the coil wire to the dizzy cap. then nothing. wheres your shop at ? i heard bad things about the hei dist. my buddy thats helping me said hes had nothing but problems with hei and nothing but good things with the conversions :screwy:

man!!! ok have someone help you, see if when you are cranking that you have voltage. last but not least put the points back in. check again.

its ALIVE!!!! ;D got it running last night. dont ever count out the simple things cause they just might be the reason. in this case 7 of my plug wires were not seated down all the way on the cap :banghead:. i guess you live and you learn right ? i have a video but wont let me post it on here. saying its too big. no idea how to downsize it. ill try some more later today for you guys.
this is how i covered the transum holes. my dads a plumber so he got these metal pipes covers and we got 1 inch thick aluminum bar drilled and taped it for the screw to screw into, put some silicone all over it and stuck it on. cost about 20 buck for the covers and had a buddy drill and tap the aluminum bar.

@farmergord. me too :P although i pulled the numbers on the carb and its a 650 holley not a 750. no biggie :P works a hell of a lot better then that edelbrock so im not complaining. thanks again

took the boat over the puddingstone yesterday but they wouldnt let me on cause it was jet ski day. they let me put the boat in the water and run it on the trailer. going back today to run it. got a little teaser video :P

since the lake is so small, and the "speed" zone is so small they are on an odd, even, schedule.. the jet skiis go in the speed zone on the odd and boats on the even... BUT you can put a boat on the water anyday you want.. u just have to stay out of the speed zone and you cant go faster then like 5 or 10 mph.. pretty much no wake...

Yeah it's odd even. But I thought it didn't start till may first. You can put a boat in anyway but it's usually only for fishing. Any more then ten miles and hour and they bust you. Since the lake is so small they have a good watch. And with a loud boat they follow you. Wasn't worth it so I'm gonna go back today and open her up

Didnt even notice. I was adjusting the ball valve off the pump to get more heat in the motor. I wasn't worried about burning myself as I'd rather do that then fall in the green dirty ass water over there. I swear I saw a diaper in there yesterday

total inspiration..im so close to being in that same situation it hurts...maybe a couple weeks

took a trip out to havasu this weekend. it was really nice. wheather was about 88 and no wind. little chilly in the morning but warmed up nice. got some little things to work on still but other than that it ran awesome ;D ;D
