Title: My new project

Its not exactly a boat but a swim step... but it is my project for February so here goes --
All the lacquer has worn off my swim step and it is looking real bad. I know a lot of people say don't treat the wood with anything other than oil. Will this still work if I sand off the varnish real well? Or do I have to re-do the lacquer or whatever it is, because it has already been done once that way? Also a lot of the joints have been filled in with a filler of some sort that is falling out in several different places. What is good to use to replace that?

If they are teak...I would go to someplace like West Marine and find oput what kind of stripping solution they would recommend. I had a 1977 Mini Day with teak swin steps and would strip and re oil every season and looked great every year.

I've never had to treat teak before but when we replace wood flooring on equipment trailers we coat the bare wood with linseed oil.
I would bet that the guys at West Marine could tell you what you need (then go to Home Depot and buy it) ;D

Nah I don't set foot in HD by mutual agreement ;D but I get what you are saying Chief. So is a good quality varnish NOT the way to go here? It seems like it would last longer than oil, but WTF do I know?

my .02 guys, and kinda a thread jack buttttt, when I put the carpet in my boat I bought the carpet and glue from westmarine, not cheap :mad: but when I ran out of the glue to finish the job (dumbass me miscalculated what I would need :banghead:) I went to good ole homo depot to get some glue. Bought the best they had for outdoor waterproof glue, and it wasnt worrth SHIT :mad:

Lol I am a Manager for Home Depot, that's funny. IMO, I would try and refinish the steps one of two ways, assuming they're of a hrdwood, like teak. First, strip it with fine steel wool and the stripper of your choice. Then I would buy some of the two part, mix it up clear coat epoxies out there. The same stuff they do wooden bar tops with (Not that I've ever seen any of those, but I've heard). Second, and maybe the budget (read cheapskate) way out, is strip it, or even a pressure washer can do a good job of it, but be careful, then use a deck sealer like Thompson's water seal or similar. You'll have to reseal it maybe 2-3 times a year, but the stuff is cheap.
If you want a spray glue, 3m 777, the only way to go. Refelted my pool table using it, phucked up, couldn't get it back off, hadda buy new felt, again, retry. Much more cautious second time around.
