Title: My Winter Project

Ok, some have of you have noticed I sold my 460. So I might as well spill the beans as to what's going on. My wife and I decided to quit putting it off and start restoring the whole boat. We will have it painted, interior done, rhino line the floor and bilge, drop in a 501 (from Tom @ JBP) and freshen up the pump (add a ride plate, snoot, etc.). I will post pics as we go. The only thing is that we might end up not getting wet this summer. But I'm going to try and work some ot at work and get the extra cash to get us on the river by June at the latest. We'll see what happens.

nobody knows this better than us eh 2sav

you can probably pick up a good hull less motor for 3k with all that done to it.
i bet your looking at 5k min to do this to your hull. what make is your boat?

You'll be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay money ahead finding a nice boat that is complete, shit look at the Hondo that Sanger Pete is selling, beautiful freakin' boat, new shit everywhere on it, 5K, you can't build a freakin motor for 5k.  Trust me on this one, I had almost 5K in the Tahiti, it still needs an interior, and the engine gone through, and the list goes on and on.

If you're not in love with that boat or plan on keeping it, don't restore it. Boats are cheap right now and you can get a hell of a deal out there, on some very good quality manufacturers. I spent enough to buy 3 or 4 nice turn key boats, but I plan on keeping this one. It's alot easier to buy a turn key boat, add some eye candy, and just run it. A 5 grand restoration will turn into 8-10. But then again if you want a project go for it. I'm sure nobody here will say

I'm actually doing a lot of the work. I will rough sand the hull 1978 Python (miller bubbledeck copy), painter gonna charge me 1500 for complete paint, blueprint bottom and long block sand deck, and paint trailer. I already cut plywood for interior and got 800 quote for that. I just need quote for ryno lining for floor and bilge. As for the ride plate and pump work, figuring on about 600 total if I don't upgrade impellor or bowl and I'm seriously considering a jetaway which is like 1500. I already have new guages (from Omar) and stereo (kenwood cd, jbl 6x9's, and jbl 220w amp). I do understand that it would be far cheaper to buy turn key hull less motor, but I can spread out the cost over several months and take pride in the work.  :screwy:But you've given me something else to contemplate lol :banghead: I may look for a straight hull with good paint & interior. We'll see. ;D

Half the fun is doing it yourself, gotta give him that.

And yes, As Omar said, Open your wallet then bend over.  The one thing I have learned very, VERY quickly is that boats are a lot like Ex-wives. Very, VERY expensive, but worth every penny, lmao

there is something to be said for doing it yourself, the satisfaction you get when you are finally done and can stand back and admire your work, estimate what you think you will spend/need then triple it ;D,  if i added up what i put into forkedups rebuilds my wife would shit then kill me.

BTW just got a quote from a friend of a friend to Rhino line my Saguaro, $295. And do it at my house, sooo, dunno if that's low-ball or not, but sounds VERY reasonable.

thats 4300 minimum yes pride in doing it yourself is great. your not doing the paint, ride plate or pump so what are you saving ???

in the end you still have a python, not saying it wont be nice but, there are more desirable hulls out there with better resale value. in the end you have a boat worth 5k.

Forgive Ralph, this new econony has him thinking in dollars and sense.  :banghead: to some extent I agree, but.....

I beleive, and I agree with GT on this, the feeling of building it yourself is priceless. 'Tis why when the Saguaro is done, the Rebel will probably be given to my brother, in all likelyhood. (If he can STAND the heifer paint job)

Show me one guy on here who can get more than they have in their boats and I will volunteer to kiss their a** at high noon in the middle of the intersection of 7th and Washington.

God knows how many motors ,
and he raised all his boys in it and still to this day keeps it like the day he bought .

I should be so lucky to make my next boat , modeled after "THAT" recipe .

Ralph is right, I would like to find a better hull such as a gull wing or tunnel (tpr stealth is ultimate dream hull) and I might stumble on a smoking deal for a better hull (wish I could have bought that biesmeyer (sp?) that was for sale a few months back. That would have been a fun project. But I will have to pay off my engine first and then I will start looking out there for a better hull. I looked at a few last week, but couldn't find anything that was cheap enough. There was a free hull here that if I had noticed it in time, I would have been all over that. Anyway if any of you come across a smokin deal in the meantime, keep me posted. As for now, working towards paying off the 501bbf and the associated running gear first and then I'll see what pops up. I do appreciate all the comments and ideas, keep them coming. Opinions are definitely welcome!!!  ;D

A few years back I was going through the same thing .
Had more money than time and when I took my 20' Saguaro down to GS Marine , first words out of dudes mouth were , "Do you reeeeally like this boat?"
I wanted them to do the stringers and some other wood and glass work and Gel.
He told me I would be 10k into it  :o
I had everything for it .
Tanks , pump , motor , gauges , everything !
I took his suggestion and sat on it for a while and do some hunting around .
A couple weeks later , I ran across my Hallet for $4800 turn key .

On the other hand , by redoing your hull it'll look exactly how want it and there is compromising there .
Instead of buy something that "Catches your eye" .
Thats alot of scratch to toss around .
How long do you plan on keeping it ?
This day and age , NICE jet boats arent selling , let alone for pennies on the dollar .

It's not too bad, the only deal breaker I see on it is that its not a full stringer boat. I should be in the 600hp range, and eventually plan to go supercharged so I doubt that it could handle that.

You say you got a quote for paint at $1500, thats dirt cheap, what kind of paint?  The materials should be in the $1000 range.

How closely have you looked at the hull condition? I have gotten balls deep in a project, then realized there are major structural issues in the hull.

It looks like your going to be in this thing a bunch for saying it's not your dream boat...

If interested, we have a 1976 (+/-) Southwind full stringer 19' jet that is done, I mean done. New; paint (two tone rootbeer float), interior, powdercoated rail kit (set up for SBC but easy to change) dual fuel tanks, Berkeley pump w/new "B" impeller (have a new "A" if you want), droop snoot, ride plate, guages, controls, trailer paint (single axle) trailer wheels tires, gunwale moulding w/insert, pink slip for boat and trailer (cuurrently registered) and more I'm sure.

We have about $6000 in this little boat, the small block Chevy thats in it may go in my Carrera, have not decided (it's too nasty), I will try to post up some pics now that I am finally working normal hours at work, this boat is super clean and has not been in the water yet (for about the last 10 years also), if your interested in it, we could sell it to you for $3500 less engine and I can help get the motor mounts sorted out for you.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see you do this project more than anyone, have you seen my weaknesses?, but you already said you wouldn't mind getting a better boat...To me that says "I won't be very happy with it when I'm done".

I normally look for projects (actually they find me  :banghead: ) that are something that I want (Carrera) when completed, right now there are so many boats out there for sale cheap it's sort of a shame.

Please don't think I'm trying to discourage you from getting this thing done, just be sure it's what you want to do.

I will, been meaning to, but have felt like the absent minded professor lately (been there three times and keep forgetting to take the camera), I guarantee this is a good deal even in this economy, we have too damn many boats (between my dad and me, we have 7 boats and looking for another, I think we're both severely retarded).

Zactly.  Not talking you out of it and if you got a quote for $1500 that is a SCREAMING GOOD DEAL!!!!  I figured I had a touch over $2000 in materials on mine though to be fair, I was not efficent having never done it before. 

Best of luck and we're all here to help, just dont want you to go down the road and get nickle and dimed to death with costs you didnt factor in.  GT's boat sounds awesome

I emabrarked on the dream you have last year-bought an 18' Hondo v bottom- southwind bottom-  " yeah yeah yeah i want to build a badass jet boat" :banghead: the boat is upside down in my front yard not even close to being back in the water and I have already spent more on the pump than I had in the intital cost of the boat- yeah I will be able to look at it when it is done and say I built that, but if I ever sell it, it will still be a $15k boat I might be able to get $7k for- pending the economy crawls out of the sh%ter-  browse craigslist- there is so many bitchen boats that you can pick up for pennies, pedal the motor out of it so you can put your mill in it and offset the cost of the boat- not trying to piss in your cherios, just speaking out of experiance-
But if you are like any other red blooded gear head- throw caution to the wind and party like it is 1999 >:D

and I might have a line on an early 70's 18' full stringer kona on a single axle trailer for a screamin deal- let me know if intrested

That Southwind sounds sweet, but 3500 is way out of my range. My painter quoted $1500 for white on bottom, and black on top with blue "true"/"real" flames and blasting the trailer & shooting it white. I assume his workers are probably illegal and wouldn't be surprised if he got his materials from Mex where they don't have all the taxes, or enviro laws, not to mention "fell off the truck" specials. But I have seen his work and its pretty good. It's no Dick Vale or Mike LaValle. But he does good work. Here is a pic of what he did for us already.

I'm looking for one of those paint and interior are in good shape and it has no motor (maybe no pump) and it's in the way so they're lookin to get rid of it for 500-1000. I'd love to get that southwind but the best I could do on something like that is like what Tom is doing for me 1k down and payments.

Ok, here's the latest. Sold the python and am buying a 78 Record 7. Never heard of the hull but looks like eliminator bottom and liberty top. Getting a pretty good deal on it. I will post pics when I pic it up this friday. It's rough, but its definitely a better hull design than the python, plus it's full stringer.

Thanks GT, I really like the design better and think it's a faster hull than what I had. What I had was a pretty heavy hull, the Record 7 is a much lighter hull. Plus its in better condition for me. A lot less sanding  ;D and the interior is there so that should be a lot cheaper to recover. My wife isn't too happy. She really wants an open bow  :screwy: . But I'll get her a pontoon when its done and she'll be happy.

A quick update. buffed out gelcoat, came out ok. Painted stripes shot out. Pulled all the guages and switchs. Upon closer inspection, I've decided to replace the whole harness as well as switchs. Figure it's cheap insurance. Still need to pull seats out to have drivers fixed and to protect them from the sun. Then I need to drain tanks. I'm thinking of pulling them out so I can put new level senders in them. That's a lot of work, but it would be nice to have working fuel guages lol.

hey sam for the gel if it came up ok with buffing, maybe you should try wet sanding...or there is this kick ass stuff i have seen called starbright...i've seen that stuff do wonders...g/l with the build and stay away from the mase!

I'm not big on brown, but I love the orange stripes. Thinking of doing the areas that are brown in cobalt blue candy, and then redo the oranges in shades of tangerine candy.
