Title: New Addition to the SCJB Family...
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on January 20, 2008, 02:06:10 AM
What a day.....drove to Tom @ JPB's shop this morning....then drove back home.. (12 hour round trip) ....then ralph cruised over and we went and picked this boat up tonight.....

dont ask me what my plans are with it....i have no idea....yet.

...try not to laugh at the interior.

...and check out the rolled on paint job for 'texture'  ::)

Trailer is going to be swapped with ralph's hornet trailer.

Even with that butt ugly paint job, you can't hide the clean lines of a Liberty. I'm glad someone on the boards got it. I had also pm'd Jason, with some interest in it. Is this going to be the race boat and then restore the Roger's as your river boat?

so i've decided im going to sand it down and paint it white...all white....with black/gray pinstripe accents similar to the pinstriping on them when they came from the factory....white interior with black piping (factory layout, not like the way it is now)....black pump...black carpet.

so first things first...i need to get to sanding.....so who is down for a sanding party next weekend? I need all the help I can get to have this boat ready to run for Ming.

forker: about the wheel and shifter...let me get them off the boat this week and I will get some pics of them.

Brad, did you buy the bunks or did you make them? Also why did you bolt them to the trailer like that? ??? I've got to replace one of mine.
Title: Re: New Addition to the SCJB Family...
Post by: flytime on January 27, 2008, 08:24:45 PM
We made the bunks. Very easy. Stainless nuts and bolts. Drilled and counter sunk a few holes and bingo. New bunks. Sorry I answered for ya Brad.  ;D
Title: Re: New Addition to the SCJB Family...
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on January 27, 2008, 08:34:59 PM
I through bolt them like that so they will last longer....most of the bunks that i see fail is due to the lag bolts....it usually rots around the lag bolt easily then the lag bolt falls out....I countersink the heads obviously so they dont gouge the bottom of the hull.

also, i coat the wood with an outdoor sealer....something like what you would coat a wood deck....i figure if you can get the wood to resist absorbing any of the water, it will give it some extra life.

I dont bother using any glue to bond the carpet to the wood....i just use a staple gun on the seems which is on the underside of the bunk...and on the ends.

The carpet I used on these bunks was a real pain in the ass to deal with....as you can see, the edges are all fraid...the carpet strands would run just like a knit sweater. I still need to clean up the edges.

Great job guys, ya'll kick ass this weekend. I'll plan on coming up this sat. and clear out some of my crap. Give you a little more room to work and keep your neighbors from complaning. As far as the bunks go, I use treated lumber/countersunk carraige bolts set under the carpet / then spray contact cement all the way around and ends.

did you put a straight edge on the bottom,

yes....its straight on either side of the intake.....but about 12" in front of the intake, it drops 1/16th of an inch.

Once I get the trailer wired up and the boat flipped back on it, im going to drag it down to MPD and get some input from Jack to get a second opinion. Eventually, I would like to have him put a shoe/rideplate in it. That probably wont happen until after the march race....i just dont have the time now.

Sorry I didn't make it on Sunday; I actually woke up at 4am (as you saw) for some reason so just got up; did some SCJB'ing then started reviewing lacrosse rules for the test I had to take yesterday; drove to Long Beach for LONG meeting and test and got home around 5:00; problem was I was so tired I couldn't get myself moving.

The plan is to finish sanding the bottom and get it flipped back over on the trailer tomorrow....then start doing fiberglass repair throughout the boat.

Congrats on another great find.  That Liberty looks to be one of the "blue boats".  What does it weigh?  It might be a Kevlar boat...  Competition Marine originally rigged it.  This means that the Crew Chief of the Rasberry ( Jeff Bennett) layed the boat up at Liberty and the Driver ( Craig Millet ) rigged it and sent it out the door.  How's that for history repeating itself?

Brad

Congrats on another great find.  That Liberty looks to be one of the "blue boats".  What does it weigh?  It might be a Kevlar boat...  Competition Marine originally rigged it.  This means that the Crew Chief of the Rasberry ( Jeff Bennett) layed the boat up at Liberty and the Driver ( Craig Millet ) rigged it and sent it out the door.  How's that for history repeating itself?
:o Your doomed .......  ;D

I cut out the wood today to replace the boxes under the bow...heres some pics of the light mockup

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=3]

then i coated the backsides (non exposed) with resin to help prolong their life. The front sides will be coated as well once they are installed.

[attachimg=4]

i really need to get a midget on a stick.  :-\ I tried to glass back in that 2" rail that goes down the middle of the bow. what a pain in the ass. I tried to do one long strip of mat.....total failure. its impossible to do while laying on your back.....so I just cut it into strips and im going to do 3"x6" strips every 5-6 inches.
Title: Re: New Addition to the SCJB Family...
Post by: The Chaz on February 05, 2008, 10:38:02 PM
I did mine by 1st epoxying the wood to the top and bracing it with some 2x4's I notched.  Then for the glass the 1st try I painted the area with resin 1st ( not too heavy a coat)  Then I applied the glass strips to the resin.  Finally I used a foam roller to "paint" the glass with a final coat.  This worked ok but if the resin got too thick the glass wanted to "drip" off.  Next I "painted" the area to be glassed with resin and let it cure.  Then I rubbed the area with an acetone covered cloth.  This made the resin very tacky and the glass stuck to it perfectly.  I then coated the glass with resin again.  The second method was MUCH easier and I did not run into the resin curing too fast or the strings sticking to my gloves and pulling the glass away from the work area.  It seems to be real strong but as it was my 1st fiberglass project I am no expert ::)
Title: Re: New Addition to the SCJB Family...
Post by: crewchief22 on February 06, 2008, 06:36:35 AM
I would go do a full resin coat on the panels to be installed before you put them in, that way you don't have to spend any more time under there than it takes to do the glass work.

Brad you might want to look at this Ebay sale on 270084555214 Polymer Products the Epoxy experts they are in Ontario Ca next door to you they had video on the that showed a boat being glassed and the resin was on wood first then glass was laid on you could see the wet out of the resin come through glass from back side no dry spot full penetration of glass I can find p# but you can call and info number was on there site but cant find it now look at the stuff the have for sale and spec on what they sell there
resin can be set to dry slow or fast????????

429,

I don't see a video on that ebay listing. But if i am understanding what you're describing, you are saying to coat the wood with glass then put the cloth on it so it seeps through the back of the cloth so it sticks to the underside.

That is what I was doing....I think my main problem was that I had to big of a piece of cloth. I am going to go back out there tonight and try to do it with small pieces in sections rather then one huge piece that is difficult to manage.

also, i am going to try to use a creeper to get in out from under the bow....crawling on my back in and out is a real pain in the ass and really taking a toll on my shoulder blades.

Thanks for the tips.

-Brad

no resin was on wood frist and wet then glass was placed on top of resin and resin came through from
back side when I did glass work i used a staple gun to hold  glass in place even duck tape.

Also, the video on the ebay item is just them demonstrating how to mix the epoxy. Doesnt show anything on how to apply it.

Brad, when you start spraying, give me a call with any questions you might have. I think I made every mistake possible and it still turned out okay.  Don't forget, Barry will answer his phone night and day if you run into trouble.  That Epoxy will quit curing once it cools down so if you can spray it and leave it cook for a few hours you'd probably be the best off that way.

Good luck and you have my cell #......don't hesistate to call.......john

Was the bottom half painted or the top half? lol.

Best bet is to wet sand it again with 600 grit, and reshoot the whole boat at once again when you're neighbor permits. I know this sounds like money, but alot of body shops will rent out their spray booth for around $100, because even if you totally inclose you're garage overspray will still get everywhere and give it a weird texature look.

What color is it? Is it metallic? Also depending on the clear, when the nieghbors gone you might be able to spray it without the clear looking too bad Before wet sand and buff.

Just my $0.02

and painting in the garage ever again is not an option.

If the prep is completely done before taking it to a booth(which I'm sure it is since you were painting) then 3 hours shouldn't be a problem. I would think flipping the boat would take the most time, and setting it on the wet paint is even worse.

120-150 for only 3 hours is pretty steep, we used to rent ours for only 100 bucks for a day. Maybe shop around a little bit at the small hole in the wall body shops

Can you do it at your friends house like the original plan?

I would offer you my garage but by the time you you drove it down here and then drove back and forth to O.C a couple of times it would end up costing more than the booth.

22 ft enclosed car hauler that was used to haul around dirtbikes to races. Really cool behind a diesel pusher motorhome going to the races with 2 Yamaha of Troy YZ250fs and 2 KX250fs before they even hit the market in late 03 early 04... Now it just sits on the side of the house with no one using it.
If you guys wanna come get it, you're more than welcome.

yeah....on sunday flytime, my buddy doug, and myself screwed with several ideas on how to hook the font end up....all resulted in some very sketchy setups that would easily dump the boat if it tipped either way...

then i got the idea to turn the arm of the cherry picker over and remove the chain....and drop the bow eye in.......it was so simple and right there the whole time doug and i were amazed we didnt even think of it before....

heres a pic...

The clear coat will also act as a sealer and when it comes times for the graphics it should be a hard enough coating as to not leave any tape lines.  It's kind of like using expensive stuff in place of the intercoat.
Title: Re: New Addition to the SCJB Family...
Post by: COORS HEAVY on February 12, 2008, 03:25:59 PM
SO DUE TO TIME AND MONEY AND NOT LAYING DOWN THE SEALER WHICH WILL FILL IN THE SANDING MARKS THEN THE BASE AND THEN THE CLEAR. YOU LAY DOWN PRIMER THEN CLEAR WHAT EVER GETS YOU ON THE WATER.

I dont know shit about paints....zero.

I went over to SPI as suggested by Jrork and asked (http://spi.forumup.org/viewtopic.php?t=1896&mforum=spi) for their opinion on what was the quickest way to get this thing done. no one said anything about fillers. Also, I was told by barry (owner) that this primer should fill 80 grit no problem....even though i went over the boat with 180 grit, you can still see sanding scratches. I am not saying he is wrong, but it could very well be the way we applied the paint. This is my first time painting something of this scale.....second time for my buddy.

Remember, I got 3 weeks till the race to build this boat....that doesnt include testing....or the fact i have a full time job. I'm further behind then I was with the raspberry and the boat is 'hands off' for a few days.....which brings me to 2 weeks left. I wish i had all the time in the world to do it right to silence critics, but thats not the case. I am making due with what I have and know....and the help of some very kind people on this site.

Brad, two stage paint always looks shitty when it's just paint, IMO, it should be tits when you get the clear on. The clear is the shine and finish. If you want graphics, do them now and clear away, you will get no tape lines that way.

Let me jump in with my lack of knowledge and say that thing looks fantastic.  IF, Brad had all the time in the world it would have been great to go with the epoxy, then some 2K primer then the base coat and then the clear but let's be honest guys, he's doing fantastic with a VERY short timeline.

The epoxy does a nice job of sealing the boat and get's it in one color. That epoxy has a pretty nice gloss too.  The key is when he blows on the clear.  It is gonna be blinging for shine. Most base coats that I looked into had a very flat look. It was the clear that gave them the shine.

Chromey, I agree with the idea of the 800. If it loads up the paper, you might try 600 instead.

Also, you might want to tell your sprayer that when I sprayed the Universal Clear, I put on a medium wet coat and followed that up with 2 more coats of it WET.  It was so wet that I was actually watching the ripples in the wet clear as I was spraying.  Turn off the booth fans as soon as the overspray is gone from spraying the last coat and have a couple cold ones. The orange peel flows out this way really well.

Brad, run your race and then sometime when you're chilling with nothing to do, you can wetsand it with some 1500 and 2000 grit and get somebody to buff it and it'll look even better.

If you want to do some graphics sometime in the future, sand the clear, shoot your graphics and pull your tape ASAP while the graphic paint is still a little wet so it'll flow. Follow that up with some more clear and you'll be fine.

Regardless, I think you're doing great given the challenges you're under and once again hats off to Chromey...................john

Tom, the boat's color scheme is going to be black and white.

All white boat with black accents. I already have the headers black... (ones from the ras) I was planning on painting the block and heads black anyways (at a later date) ....the carpet will be black...interior will be white with black piping....black gauges, black numbers, etc...

Brad, I'm sure there's a Kohl's near you, go by some cotton sheets, attach them to the boat with the BLUE masking tape you see in all the home DIY shows, you'll be golden, I had to keep my 39 coupe from getting greasy when I put it back together after paint, this worked great for me

sweet brad. Glad to hear it's all coming together.

theres only 2 jet classes....each class has 4 heats....2 each day....sometimes we dont run for the first time until 1 or 2 pm.

even if i knew the schedule or order of classes and told you what it was, it would change 10 times before the races even started....then change 10 more times throughout the day.

Yes !!! The Grand Poobah took the  NJ trophy !!! [attachimg=1][attachimg=1]  He made every race, no breakouts, no dnf 's, and collected the points.

And Ralph KICKED ASS in CJ, leaving a parking lot full of broken Chevys in his wake (silly Chevy boys trying to take on a MIGHTY BBF   :screwy:).

thanks to everyone who had a hand in helping me get this boat done....flytime, wanabe, marcsrollin, chromey, my bud doug, cousin kyle, undone, Chromey for the help with the awesome paint job....and of couse, Tom, Josh and Rhonda over at Jet Boat Performance and Ralph and his Pops of Brunt Racing. With out the help of all of you, this boat would still probably be the same boat the day i bought it.

Huge thanks for luckie stiff and his wife....there are no words that can discribe the extent of hospitality they have given myself and everyone else on the site. They are good people for sure.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with the boat at the race...Terry, Marc, Ralph and his Pops, Tom @ JBP, Skip, Bob for the gauge, chromey and marc for going on the tour de bakerstucky looking for a mech gauge and oil.....and last but not least....thanks propless for sticking around and helping me clean up/break down camp.

I had no intentions on winning anything this weekend. I only wanted to shake down the boat and get some seat time in it. We had some gremlins to work out and still do. It came as a shock to me that I took first when we started trying to figure out who won so the purse sponsor (Jet Boat Performance) could write the checks.

Since nick blew his motor and lance/rick were having fueling issues, I won by default, but I will accept the plaque on behalf of SCJB.

A correction to propless, I did have 1 DNF.....first heat on Saturday I came in after 2 laps....the electric oil pressure guage  was showing only 20lbs and I played it safe rather then sorry.

Consistency pays off! Great job Brad! Just keep on truckin' and keep on finishing and the points add up.

What was the final placement for all entries in both NJ and CJ? Did Ralph take #1 in CJ?

Also, do you know the status on the driver that got hurt pretty bad yesterday? From what LittleRick and I saw, we're pretty sure his boat landed on top of him so he must've gotten banged up pretty bad.

I had a great time and glad I could make; even with the suckie weather on Sat, it was a good time.
It was good to see everyone and a special thanks to Bob for driving and letting us crash in his room and to Skip and his better half for being phenominal hosts and cooking up some good meals.
When we got home my son went into the garage and got his ski vest and some cloves and put them on; of course, he was a boat racer  :D .

Parker race is coming up and some changes needed to be made....so I headed over to brunt racing yesterday and had the help of ralph and his pops...i cant thank these guys enough!

Since a lot of the stuff on my boat had been borrowed to make the race....it was time for me to start buyin my own stuff. so all new msd ignition and we decided to try out the single carb top on the tunnel ram. a different carb is going to be on order soon via JBP. Also, we replaced the transom adapter, added a drop that i borrowed from my cousin, and a old style place diverter i picked up a long time ago at the swap meet.

Here is some pics...

thanks!

I made some more progress tonight....

i got the rest of the tunnel ram bolted down....finished up the pump...mounted the other tank so i could get the moon tank back to rick (thanks for letting me borrow that!)....and figured out some plumbing issues....trip to home depot tomorrow for my ghetto fabulous plumbing job....black hose with hose clamps. it will get me by for this race. I priced out what i would need for a braided kit and figured it can wait till later.

Any ideas what I can use to seal the black cable at the transom with? its just a hole, no threads.

You should mount the gas tank on the other side to offset the weight. just my .02

that was seriously taken into consideration when mounting it. I don't think this location will be its permanent home. I couldn't do it on the other side without hitting the alternator....and it would have required some complex fabricating to make it work. I want it to be on the other side, but far enough back to where i can still run a bench seat. maybe you can make something trick for me nick?

Brad concerning the hole for the trim cable... I seem to recall a foam rubber grommet for that hole JBP should know of what I speak. If that isn't available Use some foam backer rod from home center and make a fillet with silicone or in true racer fashion wrap a strip of 100 MPH tape to the cable and force it into the hole!!!

we were back at it this weekend, but first we had to sell a car so all the shit came out of the back yard. kinda looked funny with all the boats and stuff on the street
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10041/DSC05182.JPG)
then we had to get'em all back in to start working :o
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10041/DSC05186.JPG)
can you say CHA-CHING
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10041/DSC05190.JPG)
nothing is easy >:( one of the carb studs was stripped so off came the top of the manifold for repair.(thanx pops)
that gasket was on there so good, you should have heard him cussing :D
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10041/DSC05191.JPG)
i dont remember what he was doing but the carb looks good
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10041/DSC05194.JPG)
doing some late night tuning

the header gasket blew out so had to change it, he loves working on his boat, look at that smile :D

it runs good on the trailer, but there is only so much tuning you can do while its there.
some sticker work

the motor home is fiberglass and its checked pretty bad and the chrome sticker really shows it, but still looks cool as hell

right out of the box the rear float level was too high and spitting gas out the tube. that was an easy fix as you know. it tuned really well after that. there is only so much you can do on the trailer, with that being said i think when i am ready for a new carb that will be the direction i will go.
That motor looks like it means business. Good luck defending your points lead.
haha, my dad says this boat even looks faster than mine (and it does)
there is only so much HP we can get out of this motor in its current state. if he wants more it will require major surgery.

got the foot throttle squared away.....i measured 6 feet for the cable...ordered a 7 footer for good measure....turns out i needed 8 feet  :banghead: ...so i used the cable that was way too long...as you can see it wraps around the motor in this big crazy loop.

got the steering extension on there so im not so tucked up under the dash anymore....then i whiped down the boat and gave it a quick maguires detail wax spray....and shes ready to go.

the new seats should be here in the morning and be installed tomorrow afternoon then we're headed to parker.

i just took a few minutes and skimmed through this thread from the beginning... wow. lots of good memories here.

this boat is a complete transformation from what it was when i bought it in January to what it is now....and without the help of people from this site, it would probably be sitting in my driveway the way i bought it collecting rain water.

Before:

After:

things like this get me a little mushy inside...i love this site, the people on it, and what it has become. I couldn't be more proud to be a part of this place. thanks to everyone who was involved.

here is the status of where things are....i think.  :-\ i've been misunderstood previously

gaskets were delivered last week to him after waiting weeks to get the part numbers from him .....it took a call from jim rich to make this happen - pathetic, i know

I'm not sure what the status of the motor being 'finalized' is....he says hes just waiting for the pan, thats it. It was in a state of "pretty much done" before the thanksgiving race. we'll see if i make the feb race.

i ordered a oil pan this week. should be here within a few days

in the mean time, im doing odds and ends on the boat to get it ready to drop the motor in and go.

the gunnel support i put in on the drivers side didnt take for some reason...so i ripped it out and re-glassed it back in....i think it took this time.

also, i finally put the bulkhead in that i've been meaning to.

tomorrow i gotta make the bracket for the new seat....then its off to jeremies to hopefully put the motor in.

i will put a J drain in the gunnel support to let the water from the front go to the back, but not vise versa. it bugged me when all the water would rush forward when i would lift

What happened?

the unfinished motor is back in my posession - its going to the Brunt Racing labs to be torn down and we will be starting from scratch.

He got smart and bought a Chevy FORD ;D

I bought the ford 460 from 2sav to get me on the water in the mean time. It will serve as my lake motor for the season so im not having to run 100+ octane everytime i go out....not to mention putting wear on the race motor.

Post by: Brad @ SCJB on February 10, 2009, 12:32:47 PM
also, the armondo's pan is on its way back to armondo to be reconfigured....the pickup tube was hitting the crank by a lot. Not even a little presuasion and intimidation of bending it could fix it.

and no, I wont be racing in havasu this weekend.  :banghead:

since the new motor is taking MUCH longer then ever anticipated and we are back to ground zero (bare block - all new rotating assymbly on order)....i decided to pick up another motor....i bought this from 2sav a month or so ago....tore it mostly down and cleaned her up...put some paint on it....spent several hours on it tonight.

I also had Terry (hdrider) hammer out the old pan and re-weld it since the last oops. (no pics yet, sorry!)

anyways....this motor isnt anything special and it will serve as my play (lake) motor since the motor in the works (race motor) will be a stroked 514 that will require expensive gas  >:D

anyways, on with the pics.
