I started a thread on Hot Boat and it gave me a lot of info but when it went off line not only did we loose a really cool thread I lost a lot of good info.

What I want is your input on a new boat design. I'm thinking of three different boats 1) jet drags, 2) Comp Jet Circle racer, 3) river boat for the family. The ultimate goal would be to be the Ferrari of jet boats, building family boats in order to finance the racing. You can look at the first iteration on www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPUcp3M9k0s. Even though this shows a blown motor, I think this is closer to the circle boat concept. Drag boat would be narrower, smaller air traps, smaller cockpit and maybe shorter, Family boat would be completely different with seating for four, open cockpit, extra interior amenities, etc.

I think it's bad ass . With the amount of racing and knowlege you have of boats , you could very well be onto something . What kind of deck and power is the first one going to be running .

Happy you think that the first one is soon to pop out of the molds.  Sad news is the design is far from ready.  I have been looking into software for the production design, structural, aerodynamic and fluid analysis alone is over $14k and I need some engineering help.  CNC machined molds could reach $100k. We could build a plug the old way but the way I'm wanting to build this all the bulkheads, stiffeners and interior shell would all be molded.  Hence the computer modeled approach would let it be produced much more accurately.  Even though this design is big ( 18'x8' ) I hope we can keep the circle boat at about the 300 lb range.  Computer controls on the bow elevator and the trim flaps need to be designed and I'm not the guy to do that. I would like the steering and throttle controls to be all tied into the computer and use fly-by-wire software so there is no steering wheel. We'll use a joy stick.  That way getting out ( or being "taken out") of the boat won't be obstructed by a steering wheel.  Lots of ideas on my part but I want to here from you guys.  What would you want in a new design ( ok besides mach 2 and be able to turn inside it's own width).

To answer your question the "mule" prototype I would hope to have a legal Comp Jet motor in it.  Dreaming... it would be an all Aluminum 496 with 2x1150 dominators, Air Flow Research heads, BIG roller cam, Dry sump, Carillo rods, Dual MSD ignition.  The design requires about a 20" drive shaft and in trying to keep the center sponson narrow the motor will probably need an aft mounted starter. The dreaming gets to be so much fun...

Your up on the current rules much more than I am, and before anything became "real" I would be getting rule books, but is there anything that says you can't design a "fly-by-wire" system?  i.e. all controls are through actuators and not cables? If I had to go to a steering wheel the cockpit would surely have to get some major rethinking.

Removable steering wheel couplers are standard in most types of racing, making entry/exit much easier.  I would have had a very hard time getting into my race truck without removing the steering wheel.

Between the joy stick controls and all the acuators and computer to make it all happen , is going that route worth the added wieght over conventional cable systems and not to mention the astronomical (sp?) cost . Maybe I'm just thinkin small fry's but the rigging in this is going to be waaaay over the top when all you want is to test a new hull right . Or am I missing the big picture .

I'm a bit over the top, of course, that is kind of the idea.  But as far as weight goes I think if this system was comprehensive (i.e. engine management, left, right up, down, go & woe) in the design the net overall weight of a fly-by-wire could be less, much less in fact.  Costly, yep that's the fly in my ointment. But then we might be able to trickle down the technology into packages for other types in the boating community, making operation, fuel economy etc. cheaper.  But I shouldn't kid myself this would be an EXPENSIVE piece of work.  Know of any really rich octiginarians who want a legacy?  Their wills would be appreciated. ::)

Wish I knew someone . Of course I'm just throwing stuff out there I'm sure you've already thought of . I for one am completly fasinated with any kind of progress or forward though your might make .

I've been thinking about the Fly-by-wire issues and looking at blow over videos.  All of them seem to show that the driver can't react fast enough, ether because of adrenaline or not knowing the angle of attack is getting too high, they never get off the throttle.  F-1, Unlimited Hydro, Drags doesn't matter. If the fly-by-wire links the speed, angle of attack and throttle position in the ideal program and with the right right actuators (fast and accurate) it could adjust the bow wing, throttle and flaps automatically, preventing blow over. This might solve a big issue and allow the driver to maintain max speed (allowed) on the straights. This could also be a great cross over for all classes and justify the development costs.

I cant remember if the wings on the front of the daytonas was ever adjustable or if it was a fixed wing deal . I cant believe they wouldnt have tried to make those adjustable .

if you watch carefully in those world jetboat finals in Mexico on youtube (some breath taking footage) those guys have a wing on the front thats controlled by a foot pedal. I don't think they are to assist in a blow over, but to help get some extra lift on the front end of those aluminum boats.

Jeff Bennett designed the wings for the Daytonas and as far as I know they were fixed and meant to keep the bow down in a regular attitude.  If it got high there was no adjustment and if the AOA got too high they could make the situation worse. The adjustable wings in Unlimiteds I've heard didn't do much good and kept the driver too busy with the right foot.  But if you look at them they are so small compared to the rest of the boat the total down force generated by them could not be very high.  Putting a lifting wing on the bow makes no sense at all for our kind of racing ether drags or circles, the center of lift vs. the center of gravity is already backward.
