Paul good call I recently had a quite heated disagreement re: the subject of doing this Kind of "project on a budget using used , preowned ,craigs list ,ebay and yes "repairing stuff" ,bargain hunting etc ! It can be done and I still maintain so ! Tom (pan is "beat to fit paint to match" ::))
-
Ok so the long block core went to be tanked magged and bored (its .030 over now) pistons & stuff are on the way and yours truly did a little torch action on the oil pan ..

Hey Tom,
Curious about the oil pan... With it being welded back up and all what will you coat it with to avoid rust and all that good stuff?

DUH! ;D
-
Undone I actually epoxyed ofver the welds with "sea going poxy putty" then a "rattle canned' it with some gold rustoleum ("getto gold irridite" ) O0 Tom
-
right on. I did the rustoleum treatment on my old boat... The paint eventually started blistering and rusting the pan after 2 weeks outside. Apparently the neighbors sprinklers penetrated my cover and filled the bilge just enough. Long story short I was ran the header lines under the oil pan. The T-valve was right under it and in my own haste to make sure it worked I started the boat up. The torque twist of the engine pushed the rusted pan onto the T-valve and punctured the pan. Coulda repaired it I guess but instead I order an 11quart Moroso. They sent me a pan for a Gen 4 when mine was a gen 5. Next pan came in and it was 9" deep. I needed 8"... Next pan came in it was an 8.25" deep 8 quart Moroso. So I banged up the oil pan a bit to clear the pump, got the engine sitting right where we wanted it for the drive angles and got rid of the rubber dampened mounts. $2000 dollars later the pan still wasn't perfect, but made it work... Took two weeks to get all the money back. Good stuff. Next time I'll just call you Tom...
Sorry for the thread jack, in a sense I guess it's on topic... For all you first timers, like I was. MAKE SURE YOU PLAN. Ask all the questions first as opposed to kicking yourself in the arse later!

Any updates?

Actually Jeff I did good till it caught a lilttle sandy patch and almost put it in the "weeds" Had a major "flash back" from 30 years ago (TR4 A in a ditch ) I think it was Brads engine parts in the trunk .made it lite in the front end ,causing understeer ;D
ps ,dont laugh I did 5 + miles in 2nd and 3rd (I shift this thing at 5500 to 6K) redlines 6500, most fun you could have with your clothes on !

What your seeing here is my Dad crankn away on the oil pump drive rod with my speed wrench, and its a bit hard to read but the gauge was shown almost about 75 psi. Thats an out of the box Melling....love those ford pumps.
-
Hand cranked oil pressure wow !! does that mean I'm gonna have to ride in the boat turnin that wrench while Brad drives ??? :banghead:
-
Lol, I was wondering why you didn't just use a drill? Only thing I could think of was maybe the pump shaft would slip inside the drill and drop some metal shavings down into the engine :banghead: Doh that was me once upon a time ;)
-
Looks bitchen, Except the dizzy's in the front, not the back where it belongs. And the fuel pump is on the wrong side :banghead:
Wait maybe you put it on the stand backwards ;D
Way to go guy's, Brad get out there and kick some AZZ........... >:D

Actually Charles your correct we would normally use a drill and a "pre oiler tool" I was just screwing around at the end of the day ,I was amazed however at nearly 80 psi cold (15/ 40 rotella oil) and my "hand turning" with a speed wrench (standard pressure and volume pump) Tom
Dizzy in the wrong end?? now Steve ;)
-
Correct i'll post pics of the process, cam degree etc Tom
::) I have all the time in the world for free advice... patiently waiting... engine looks great... HP guestimate?
