Nick's Hallett Resto
« on: February 15, 2009, 08:30:45 PM »
I figured it would be better to start up a thread to show my progress in more of an organized way. This weekend we re-wired the whole boat and put in new gauges and got rid of the ugly circuit breaker on the back of the bell-housing and did a much lower profile set up mounted on transom.

Here are a couple pics, this is the motor all re-plumbed with new headers on (last weekend's project) and one showing the new gauges I put in.

I am taking a couple weeks off but will be getting it wet for the first time in two weeks.

I'll keep the pics coming as I keep doing new things....

Very nice Nick, you might have to change the Alternator to a one wire setup because your using a volt gauge know.

Gt maybe I'm wrong the little box be hide the Alternator has a wire going to the Amp gauge now he's running volts no need for the wire, run the Alternator wire to the battery.Huh ??? ?

Gt maybe I'm wrong the little box be hide the Alternator has a wire going to the Amp gauge now he's running volts no need for the wire, run the Alternator wire to the battery.

Most of the time the amp guage just has the charge wire going "through it", there is a shunt on the gauge back that actually has all of the charging current going thru it and to eliminate an ammeter, technically you would hook the two wires (supposed to be orange and red) together. good to go...The ignition wire then goes to (+) on the new voltmeter, I dont think anything needs to change at the alternator level.

A single wire hookup alternator is fine, but normally not the best way to go IMHO, the best thing about them is the simplicity, the negative is the fact that it charges to "battery voltage and not systen voltage, bnot a big deal, but if you get into stereo's and high draw ignitions and in our case a lot of bilge pump draw, you could undercharge the battery and run more amps than neccissary (as the volts drop the amps go up)

Just a matter of opinion, I have a single wire on my jet, but a three wire on the motorhome and the I/O...

(this is my first attempt at multi-quote, I hope it comes out ok)

Very nice Nick, you might have to change the Alternator to a one wire setup because your using a volt gauge know.

A good friend of mine came over this weekend and helped me do the wiring. We did not eliminate the little box on the back of the alternator and we used the wire that was there. He is far more knowledgable when it comes to wiring, I was trying to learn as much as I could while helping him and working on other things. I wasnt watching him when we did the alternator wiring. But when we started it for a minute on the hose the volt gauge was working, thats all I know.

Looks good Nick. Are going out local for a test run, if so post it, i'm sure a few of us will show up.

I will keep you guys posted, thanks for the support. It would be nice to have some support out there. It will either be the last weekend in Feb or first weekend in March. I will probably end up going out to Smellsomemore. Also on the first test day I will be putting new bunks on the trailer while it's in the water. Assuming there are no water leaks...

F That, let's do a Hallett day on the Delta!

How far is that from OC? Is that your local spot, or do you live down here? If you are down here by me, I'd much rather do an SCJB/Hallett Drinkalotta (our version of a regatta?) at the river, whata ya say?

if the river is for queers then i am a flamer. My family has had a place out there for 16 years and before that we used to go with friends. As soon as my boat is all finished up that is where it will stay, so i guess I am bias (sp?) as i will always be trying to talk people in to going out there.

Tell me more about your boat skip, is there a thread on it anywhere, it's basically the same as mine isn't it?

I was totally kidding about the river, I remember Parker  when Sundance was open, naked waterskiing, titties everywhere, a big boat was a 21' day cruiser.  my boat? not much to tell, 78 Hallett, 468 BBC, 70 MPH lake boat.

ok so the river it is then. I am thinking about joining in on the Father's day weekend deal that is coming up. I havn't heard it talked about any time soon but I do plan on going.

As for the river jokes, I knew you were kidding, I just wanted to keep it going. You remember when Sundance was open? I have never seen it open, we ususally go to RoadRunner...a buddy of mine has a place accross the river from the sherriff's station at the Rio.

Anyways, do you plan on heading that way any time soon? I really think my boat is going to be ready soon.

At this point I have no plans to hit the river yet this year, you should do the Lake Mead trip with us next month. It'd be sweet to have another Hallett there.

Nick,

Nice work on the Hallett, man.  It's cool to see a newbie kickin some veteran a$$ when it comes to getting their boat together.  Good luck on the test run at smellsommore.  Noticed you talking about a family place on the river and a buddy's accross from the Sherriff's station.  Any chance you know John or Todd Trobridge?  They live in Fountain Valley and have had a place in Parker for years and years...  Just curious.

Thanks for the kind words, I have been a weekend warrior lately just doing as much as I can in little 48 hour spirts. I have to take a break on it for a couple weeks tho due to other plans but I will for sure come back with a report as soon as I do the test run.

Yeah, my family has a place at Water Wheel Resort (in the center of the strip below the parker strip). And a buddy of mine has a place at the Rio up in Parker, but sorry, I don't think I've ever met your friends. Is their place at the Rio Amarillo?

Alright guys, if I can get my timing down and a couple final touches finished tomorrow, I will be heading out to do some testing on Sunday at a local lake called Puddingstone in San Dimas.

If any of you would like to join, you are more than welcome to do so, a 2nd boat out might be helpful...(I hope I dont need it tho)

I will get some good new pics of her in the water.

Wish me luck......
