So, after wrecking my Mako, I was looking for another boat and found this Hornet (some canadian built thing...but basically a hornet)
for the smokin good price of $800. It has some sort of pontiac motor in it now...all I know is the heads are from a 389...and it's got some decent edelbrock and glenwood hardware. it also had a JC pump, which after pulling the bowl, looks freshly rebuilt...it's got the grey anodized impeller and the bowl oil was full and clean. I've got a guy on his way down to hopefully pick up the pump tonight for $250. I've also set up a deal on the motor for $250, which leaves me with a $300 investment in this shitbox. It didn't have any seats really...had some pieces but they're junk.
The gel, (and I use that term loosely) is original and has more texture than my driveway...so if I end up keeping it, It'll get hit with the DA and shot with the white paint I've got leftover from the Mako.
The intake is kinda trick...not sure what kind it is yet, but it's some sort of lo-profile deal. I'll have to do a test fit with my BBC to see if the pan will let it sit low enough to hook up to the pump with this intake...I might have to change it out for a normal intake, and of course...do a setback.
It looks to have some pretty serious bottom work done to it...can still see the DA sander marks. The round keel makes a slow transition to a flat keel for about 3 feet in front of the intake. I figured I'd try it and see how it works before screwing with the bottom. I don't think the boat ever ran much with this setup becuase the transom adapter was hanging about an inch below the keel...maybe someone was trying to build a race boat and it sunk on the lake test...more on this later.
Here's a few pics of it after I yanked the pump.

The lo-pro intake....can anyone ID this?

And what I think happens when you try to lake test a boat with the TA hanging an inch below the back of the boat and you lift off the throttle...the boat sinks and somehow fills up with sand and rocks where you can't get sand and rocks.

The rocks/sand under the subfloor made me laugh a bit...what do you want for $800.
On a more positive note, the engine is full of fresh oil and looks pretty clean under the one valve cover I pulled, so I don't feel bad selling it with all the hardware for $250. I could probably get more...maybe I will. I dunno.
in tearing up the floor, I discover that both stringers are no longer bonded to the bottom of the boat, although the wood doesn't really look rotten at all. Looks like the only thing holding them down was the glass laying over the top of them. Stupid canadians...that's why they use aluminum boats now I guess.
So, it needs stringers for sure. I don't care about the subfloor...I can live without it. There were some nice 2x4 studs...about 8 of them supporting the deck behind a very nicely carpeted and well jammed in fake bulkhead....the studs are at least held in with plated deck screws so they didn't rust too bad.
So...do I cut bait or fix it. I've never done stringers before and while I don't suck at fiberglass...I wouldn't refer to myself as good at it either.
I guess I'll pull the motor tomorrow and get on tearing the rest of the shit out of it and cleaning everything up to get a good look at just how screwed up everything is. I don't have much money to invest in this thing.
Hey Ralph...you still got that dolly for your hornet?

Shhhhhh! We have canadians on board now....... ;D
You're gonna make Glasscutter cry over that Poncho motor, complete and everything, you know........ ;)
Looks like a lot of fun! I'd offer to help on the fiberglass but, 1) I suck at it, 2) I don't like doing it, and 3) I've got what seems like 3 acres of it to do already..... :screwy: Still looks like a worthwhile project!
If that intake is rare enough to have YOU stumped, I would have to assume the correct transom adaptor for it would be impossible to find........ :sly:

The Canucks are all drunk on Rye this time o' night...nothing to worry about eh?
Tell Glasscutter to make an offer on the poncho....and it's gotta be better than the other dude...nothing is sold till I've got the $$

Yeah...that's the thing, I'm kinda in the same boat...(that was cute wasn't it...how I just did that)...I can do it but I'd rather do other stuff, like drink beer and bitch about doing fiberglass work.

LOL...I'm unsure from whom you heard that I have some sort of clue as to WTF I'm doing with respect to boats. I assure you, this is not the case. I believe all that's been established thus far is that I can build a halfway decent engine that runs pretty good with .080" of crank walk and I can crash a boat with a proper motor in it. As for the transom adapter, i've got plenty of aluminum scraps, a fresh pack of jigsaw blades and some leftover caulking from my bathroom remodel....no problem.
-
LOL. I'll drop John a PM about the momo. X2 on the scraps and bath caulk!
I really don't know what to think "aboot" that intake, on a serious note. Hopefully someone will chime in. I've got 6 in boats and 4 others laying around, and with the exception of the twin jet's intakes and 1 Sanger intake, they are all identical. Weird for sure..... :screwy: Maybe an attempt at a JE style JC layout???

That looks like it might be a Berkeley Super Jet R intake, look under that hose between the loader pad and the mounting pad for the suction housing, should say super jet if it is. Also would have an R on the top of the loader pad between the rear loader bolts.
If it is a Super Jet R intake, let me know when / if you give up on this project. I need that intake !!

What's the advantage of running once of these intakes, aside from the fact that the motor wont fit and the TA won't fit? In looking at it, seems like it would do the same as a droop...but without a droop.
-
I think the advantages are that it sets the pump lower so the water doesn't have to travel up as far to get into the pump. And (like you said) with the angle change of the pump that you noticed the nozzle will be lower so you dont need to bend the water all around in a droop. The less you have to bend the water the better it can flow.
Bad points. Like you sad, transom adapter wont work, you need to make plates. Motor sits lower, might not clear the oil pan, rear mount, etc. And because of there lower height and different angle, alot of the low pro intakes need special hardware (loaders, etc).
-
Sooo....what'll you give me for it?
-
Does it say Superjet and have the R on it ? Thats the one I was told I need to find. If so let me know what you want for it, I also have tons of parts I can trade (normal intake machined for rideplate/shoe, blank shoe and rideplate to fit my intake, rail kits, ect) looks like you might need some parts ;D.
-
I can't see anything cast in under where the hose is sitting....I'll pull the motor tonight probably and get a better look at it.
We'll work something out. Let me get the rest of it torn down and cleaned up and see if it's worth salvaging...then I'll figure out how to proceed.
EDIT: This boat is a piece of shit and I decided to give it away to whoever showed up willing to take it. It disappeared pretty quick. I guess the trailer was pretty nice.
