I am in the process of rebuilding my 76 Howard. The engine blew last season. One thing lead to another and I decided to redo most of the neglected repairs and maintenance. Here are some of the pics of the progress. I started about a week ago and hope to be done this week.

Looks good. ;D
-
Got the oil pump, pick up, oil pan, and water outlets on tonight.
-
Looking Great! I wish I'da painted the Moo's bilge white like that! Then I'da seen the oil there quicker instead of chasing down the leak now. (Maybe that was your plan, ;D)
You should be in the water REAL quick on that!

Looking really good! Keep up the good work!

I know what you mean. With the last motor there was a constant oil slick in the bilge area. I tried to cover it up with lots of chrome (empty Coors Light cans).
-
Waiting for a couple small things from Tom at JBP and Summit Racing before dropping the motor in. Made all new seat mounts, but figured I would put the motor in first and plumb it before mounting the rear seat. Crossing my fingers on getting parts and having it done by Saturday. Want to break in the cam and motor at Elsinore before hauling 4 hours to the river.

Bingo, it holds the back of the radio. We got rid of the radio. Opted for an amplifier, 10" sub, and 2 6x9's. Ipod hookup RCAs go directly into the amp, no reception for radio at the river anyways.

XM radio works great ;D

Couldn't hear a stereo on the Moo (Which has a mount for one) If my life depended on it. Dun care how many amps hooked up to it. Eight cylinders of 466 Ford rap is my music fix on the water, lol.
Ray
Don't worry Steve, a Chebbie is well in my future too. I'm not a bigot!

the stereo is for when you float
And you going Chebbie would only make you bi ;D
Sorry for the JACK Koyota ;)

Bi.......Lingual? I thought that was someone from Arkansas who liked both sheep AND cattle?
Yeah, Terry's workin hard on me to go Blown Chebbie V-drive, and it's working, lol
To his defense, my son was the one that started all this, intitially and then with the V-drive, (Fell in love with Terry's Sanger) so.........
I do know tranny's, so this is not such a stretch. Might be fun to convert B-rad's Hallett to v drive now that I think about it..... dunno. Gonna talk to HD rider a little more this afternoon. It's only money right?
Lord my wife is rolling in her grave and planning to haunt me for sure over all this. Think about this all a minute.
She dies, and I finally get the boat she wanted. (THAT in and of itself should justify a haunting) Start building it, buying parts, etc, in THAT process get another one that's quicker and easier to build. Then buy a cruiser, because that's more what the kids had in mind, not Cindy and I, but ok, (she wanted to have the most severe hot rod on the lake, that was my Cin, and that is where my motivation is. The Moo ain't it, She's Faster than anything I've come across yet, but not the fastest I'm quite sure, but the Hallett might just be)
Then the cruiser gets (Not simply broken), but exploded, burned and sank. (Thanks Brett! couldn't have done it without ya) About the same time I get ANOTHER free hull, a flat bottom jet dealio that looks like severe kidney failure when I get it wet. (And the ONE that I think would do Cin Proud!, that thing can be made FAST)
Ray
And yeah

With all this talk about converting to V-drive, I think calling you bi would be generous. ;)
We only use the stereo when floating or beached.

Dropped the motor in.

Ran some new wires for the gauges and did some plumbing, but no pics yet.

Tonight we rebuilt the carb, adjusted the valves, and attempted to prime the oil. I say attempted because 2 seconds in we quickly realized 2 plugs were missing in the block when oil poured out into my freshly painted bilge. It was 10pm at this point, so hopefully I can pick up some plugs and have it running tomorrow.
-
Do yourself a little favor and get some cold rolled steel to back up your motormounts...Those washers wont last.
I'll get some picks of mine if need be. Make a stringer sandwich
Looks close...  I like the thumbup dealio ;D

That will be on my to do list. First priority is getting it done to be on the water before the season's over.
Need some major adjustments to the carb. Got the motor to fire for a few seconds but while adjusting the carb, flooded the crap out of the engine. May just get it going with the old carb before adjusting this new one. Tomorrow will be the day this thing comes alive.
-
Finally got the thing running tonight. It ran for about 30 secs and then the neighbor came over and bitched. Out of respect, I didn't fire it up anymore because they never called the cops or complained about the wild parties we have. Tomorrow its on.

I would run it every night for 15-20 minutes right up to 9:59pm. Let him call the cops.

Take him for a ride then you'll prolly start hearing the same thing from his crib.

Looks good Koyota, I respect your courtesy to your neighbors...and thanks again for the badge shot.

I gave such great retired neighbors, lol. They don't mind the Fugly boats beside the house, the (Now) empty trailer in the front yard, or me firing up the Moo at odd hours. Usually after I do that, the next day they come over to see what I did that absolutely needed testing at 2 AM! (Usually nothing, just someone that never heard something like this run while we were having a pool party or something, lol).
Ray
(House up the street's for sale Glenn, 3 car garage, pool, RV gate and big lot, lol)
-
No wine for the neighbors. I need to move out by the 30th. The house that I am renting is in foreclosure. Signing the lease on a new place tomorrow. Need to move by crap out and finish the boat. Trying to head out to Big River this weekend, but super hectic not sure if its even possible.
-
Saw you cruising up El Toro Rd this morning. Looks like the boat is all back together. Did you get a chance to take it out this last weekend? Looks pretty good

That was my buddy bring it back to storage. All I can say is F that thing. Took it out to Big River this weekend. Got a speeding ticket towing 75 in 55 on Rice Road, luckily the cop wrote it for 65 in a 55, then burned oil and lost oil pressure half way through the day. Milkshake. Forgot to adjust the water inlet from the pump. I cannot stand to work on that thing for a little bit. Just need a break. Love it and hate it at the same time. Endless issues. Kinda scared to take a closer look at the problem. Regardless of the issues, I still had a very good weekend. Maybe I'll work on it this weekend. BTW it looked way better on the way there, didn't even clean it since I got home yesterday. That gel is F'd.
-
I think we've all been there at one point or another. Keep a chin up, get back at it, usually you'll find a host of little gremlins you might have missed. Milkshaked the Moo her inaugural run as well (Also damn near sank it due to one missed hose clamp I didn't tighten). Cleaned her up, fixed the hose, fixed the leaky water outlet cover and water pump cover, was back in the water in about 3 hours.
The burning oil, well, that's not a good sign, but not unfixable either. Losing oil pressure could very well be directly related to the milkshake, as could the burning oil, but yeah, the engines prolly gonna need to come out and apart for a good going through. (Could also just be a head gasket(s)). Still not such a bad thing, nor that long. Look at Crewcheif, he got his BBC done in a few weeks, and is doing it again due to unforseen circumstance! (And I have no doubt it's prolly near done right now!)

Done ;)

was getting gas at parker oil and saw your rig across the street next to eddie marine i think, dont give up man its a cool lookin boat and im kinda partial to the colors
-
Thanks for all the encouraging words. I'm hoping its a head or intake gasket and nothing got hurt. I have an extra set of head gaskets. I have the marine head gaskets now, but anything wrong with running the cheapy Fel-Pro blue ones?
