Project Wriedt Stinger
« on: October 26, 2006, 02:38:04 PM »
This is the winter project I am involved with. It is a '69(?) Wreidt Stinger. It has been in the family its whole life. It its going to be restored cosmeticly as much as we can.

The boat currently resides in Havasu and will be towed back to California the weekend of Nov 3rd to being the overhaul. I will post project updates with pictures as it progresses.

Gel coat is really bad on the bow:

thanks! the project begins tomorrow night. We have a strict schedule of working on it every tuesday and thursday night and we have some creative ideas to fund this project. I cant wait to see it when its done either!

Post up some pics of your project on this site when you get a chance.

Do you plain on fixing just the damage  area on the gel coat or just re gel coating the whole boat. I would like to know more on how you plain on fixing it because I heard repairing gel coat with metal flake underneath is difficult and my boat has the same problems as yours.

well, we would like to redo the gelcoat on the entire boat, but it all comes down to money. If anything, we will just redo the bow and stern which are the worst parts.

Well, last night was the first night we got to start working on the boat and I think we made some good progress under the circumstances.

Heres some pictures of where we started....

So the first plan of action was to disconnect and remove the motor....then we hit our first road block.....the engine hoist completely failed us and buckled.....luckly it did it just as the motor came off the motor mounts and not while it was lifted up 3 feet to clear the stern.

so we lifted the motor and put it back on the mounts and moved onto removing the pump.....the first goal of the project is to replace the wood on the rear transom.....as you can tell from the pictures....it was pretty rotted.....as i scooped it out, some of it looked like planting soil/mulch  :o

Heres a few pictures of the pump coming out....

looks like a beaver was chewing on the impeller...

Heres the transom before we started hacking away at it...

...and let the hacking begin...

In those last 2 pictures you can see where the fiberglass coating of the wood still stands and its VERY strong I might add...

Heres some more random pictures of the pump on the ground....

I 'm not a gel or paint expert but I was always told that if your gonna be walking all over the boat , it might be a better idea to gel the boat since it is stronger. I dont know if the same applies when your tyrin to go over metal flake though.

Well, we picked up a new engine stand this weekend (Thanks John!) and successfully got the motor out this time. I need to get some longer bolts so I can mount it on the engine stand, so I set it down on some 2X4's for now.

The gas tanks look like they are 1/2 plastic...1/2 fiberglass.....we were only able to take out the driver side one because the other still has gas in it. The removal process was nothing easy at all. We managed to damage the tank severely and noticed that the filler neck was broken as well.

So we need new gas tanks....preferably aluminum. Anyone have any suggestions where we can pick some up or have some made? I would like them to be the same shape, so no cylindrical ones.

Also, as we near the process of prep work for paint/gel, I need to find someone who can do gel coat in the orange county or riverside/corona area. I am looking for a deal because this is a tight budget project. Maybe we can work something out.  ;) :cough: free advertising :cough:  ;)

Anyways, here are some pictures of this week?s progress....

yes....I was formally a VW gear head.....I had a '83 caged rabbit (project I never completed) and a '79 1.5L 4 speed diesel rabbit.

I also owned a mk4 1.8t rabbit which i road raced on open track days.

On a side note, I had today off and I spent about 6 hours in the garage working on the boat....I will post pictures tomorrow morning for I am off to go have some beers with some family and friends.

The boat is pretty much to the stage where it needs Gel Coat....and we've run out of money:'(

well, heres the updated pictures of the work I did on friday...the hull is bare except the intake...which has become a complete pain in the ass to remove....the screws are epoxy'd in from the bottom of the hull and I have to use a small chissle to expose the head of the screw...then back them out 1/4 of a turn at a time using a screw driver with a square shaft while putting a cresent wrench on the shaft to turn it....

by the time I am done getting all 18 screws out, my forarms will be bigger the popeye's.

heres where I started for the day with the transom....

and heres some pictures of the boat in the garage....then i rolled it out for some daylight pictures...

and now heres some pictures of after I detail cut the rest of the transom edges out with a dremmel and removed the passanger side gas tank (which came out a LOT easier then the driver side).....the passanger side gas tank was in bad shape as well...there was signs of leakage due to the filler neck being broken, just as it was on the driver side.  :-[

and heres the boat hangin out in the garage after i cleaned up and organized everything to be a bit more managable in the small space I have.

yeah, but its coming to a screeching halt due to lack of funds....need to somehow come up with $3500 for gelcoat so we can proceed.

yeah, theres minor stuff we can do in the mean time, but that will just take away the from the savings fund for the gel coat.

This project is back under full swing with a detailed plan of action!

We finished prepping the transom last night and cut out the cardboard stencil for the wood.

I will post up pictures later today.

If you have more time then money (which is my case) this is the way to go. You should see the rogers I just picked up on saturday. Cosmeticly, its worse off then this one, but its a good solid hull and worth restoring. It just takes ambition and motivation to jump in and do it. Theres a wealth of information on the internet to guide you in the right direction. Now go buy that hull!

Tonight we are going to cut out the wood for the transom and get it epoxy'd in. I was a dumbass and left my camera at work. I will post pic's of tonights and sunday nights progess tomorrow night. got that?  ;D
