well i got a new project that the wife approves of, the hondo just didnt have enough room for the wife beings how it was a t-deck. its a 1978 liberty that i picked up for 1,200 bucks, probably not the best deal out there but it will serve its purpose as a familly boat. the first thing my wife did was sit in it and said she liked the room that it had. so i was off to a good start ;). she's a little rough but with some time and$$$ as you all know she will be good for my familly. she is getting new stringers right off the bat, i probably could of gotten away with the ones that were in there for a while but hey its winter right. this pic is of the balsa floor that is coming out and not being reinstalled

this is after i stripped it down, it came complete less engine ss tanks 2-15 gal imcos, berk pump and iterior.

the boat is now at bk boat repair for the stringers and new layup on the floor, i thought about attempting this myself, but thought it was better left to the proffesionals being i am going to keep this boat for a long time and my familly is going to be in it. the bottom of this boat is an exact copy of my hornet so it should do well with 4-450 hp. all i want is 60 mph, and most of the time it will be at 35-40 just cruising with the familly.

the man you see in the pick is kenny myers, talke about a wealth of knowledge. he has been in buisness at this same place for over 30 years and one hell of a nice guy with a resumae (sp?) a mile long. i could have probably went to another place to get the work done cheaper but in comes that old saying (cheap isnt good and good isnt cheap) thanx rick. and of course i dont want and some mofo with no green card working on my shit if you know what i mean ;)
so i'm talking to kenny about my racing effforts (by the way he worked on my race boat before i got it)
and i bring up brads rootin tootin raspberry, and he tells me that he is the one who did the gel and capped that hull. as well as knowing craig and steve, the original owners of the raspberry. i could type forever about the 3 hour conversation i had with him or should i say history lesson :o but i wont.
this project will be slow in coming but well worth it to me when its done. i will keep you posted as things progress. i guess i'm just a sucker for these old boats more pics

like i said its my familly boat, i allready have a fast boat wich my familly wants no part of riding in :-\
but the plan for now is to just get the hull as solid as i can hence the new stringers and layup for the floor, then i will put in a rail kit and my little 466 that makes 4-450 hp and go cruise around at 35-40 mph and enjoy boating as i knew it before i started racing, dont get me wrong i love racing but i miss just boating with my familly at slow speeds too.

ive heard you recommend him before as well as rick so..... and one hell of a nice man. i plan on keeping this boat so thats one of the reasons i went with him

you'll be very happy. he or sal at orange county are the best. sal and family are citizens too, lol. and i know that more than a few 'mofo with no green card' have mixed resin at bk through the years as well...not to mention, it was one of them that layed up your hull when new. ;)

Looks great Ralph. I'm glad to see someones making progress while mine just sits in the driveway. What else are they doing to it there? Subfloor? Any bottom work?

blue, it wasn't cheep but, he pulled out all the shit including the transom re-laid up the floor new stringers, moved the drain plug down about 2 inches, new seat brackets, and laid up the transom, (no wood) he says it dont do shit anyway and i have to beleive him ;)

it wont take too long once i get it back, the big delima now is rail kit or 4 point, i'd like to do a rail kit but the motor plates are'nt cheap and i have a couple of 4 point set ups

Yeah i know nothing's cheap ;D The 4 points are on my need to buy list along with ALOT more. But i will get it done by next summer ;D

Although admittedly a little spendy the rail kits the hands down winner for ease of install IMO we use them all, 3s, 4s and R/kits Tom

I would think that if one was going to trace these plates, some changes would be in order. I would think that the sharp corners on the front plate would create stress risers. Wouldn't it be better to radius the corners? Also, I would think that the plate would benefit from a much larger surface area similar to that of the lightning plate. Just seems like a small plate for these torquey motors. :o my.o2

Definetly add a little beef into it, good Idea on the corners. I think the rear one could use a little more above the rail mounts too, looks like it was cut down.
I suppose in the end the front mount only has to be as stong as it 5/16" bolts and spacers holding it on ::). My favorite BBF front mounts are the ones that include the water inlet plate, might have to make one one of these days.

i use a bench grinder with a wheel, i did use a d/a sander with 320 first then i hit it with the green rouge. it cane out better than the picks show

way too much work, i'm lucky my dad does most of the work on the plates. cuz it's a BITCH

I hope you have made some final paterns of the plates. Those are worth some cash even if they don't have a Liberty, they would be very close and the botoms could be adjusted. The hard part is all the hole and shape.

(honestly the youngins been workin with his pops since he was old enough to walk !(once he bent up 30 feet of bow rail to make a gocart) ,he's bringin us a new protoge too in about 7 more months!!)

working with him has its ups and downs, that being said, his health is not what it used to be just a few months ago. so i enjoy what we do together a little more now days. this will probably be the last boat we do together so it will be with me for a long time

I have really enjoyed watching this thread. I hope its done before the Parker trip. Your dad is a genius when it comes to fabing those plates. I sure hope your taking good care of him ;D. Keep up the good work bro. Cant wait to see it done.

I have really enjoyed watching this thread. I hope its done before the Parker trip. Your dad is a genius when it comes to fabing those plates. I sure hope your taking good care of him ;D. Keep up the good work bro. Cant wait to see it done.

now that all the racing is done we got back on the liberty project. finished up putting the new cam in and removing inner valve springs for break in. then painted it up, it sure isn't the color i thought is was going to be. i want to paint it a darker color but, the wife likes it so we'll just have to wait and see.

the floor will probably add 40lbs to your boat, i'm not concerned with mph so i dont care. im more worried about my kid and wife being comfortable and not slipping

Just a piece of advise . When notching wood layout your width and heighth . At the inside corners of your notch , try and use the biggest radius you can get in there by drilling out holes first . Wood likes to find a sharp point at which to break . Kind of like metal .
I would think that if one was going to trace these plates, some changes would be in order. I would think that the sharp corners on the front plate would create stress risers. Wouldn't it be better to radius the corners? Also, I would think that the plate would benefit from a much larger surface area similar to that of the lightning plate. Just seems like a small plate for these torquey motors. :o my.o2
Since the wood in ralph's bulkhead isnt taking a load from underneath , I dont think it's a big deal .

If you look at the stringer where it meets the transome you can see where the inside corner is rounded off as well as all the other edges . Every little bit helps I think .

no, we put it in there to make sure it cleared the battery mount he made ...which it did clear beautifully and i will be stealing his idea >:D
just to give you an idea how things are done at brunt racing....we pulled the motor, replaced the oil pump (ralph can elaborate more later) and had it back in the boat in about an hour.....including an interuption by some guys who came by to buy the ATC's and wanted to haggle on the price. lets just say they drove from hemet for nothin....left empty handed.
tomorrow we will be thrashing on my boat, once again.

last year i had this motor in the hondo, we were at the avi and i sheard a dizzy gear roll pin, i figured no biggy, i'll just replace it. welllllll, brad went to prime the oil pump in the motor and it wont turn ding, ding ding, (the light goes on) now i know why the roll pin sheard off the dizzy :banghead: so out comes the motor (again :banghead:) we are really good at this now :-\. remove the pan take the pump apart and WHAMO there is a peice of metal so small that has the rotors locked up. i have no idea where it came from :banghead: looks like a small piece of mig welding wire just smaller. oh-well i got a spare pump so we cleaned the pan and back together it goes. some may say tear down the hole motor, and, yes if it was my race motor you better believe i would have, but this one, no way. so we got it all back together and primed the pump, 80psi on the stand. back in it goes.
thank you brad for all your help yesterday, now, lets get these race boats ready to go

well i was going to start on my cav plates for the hornet, then, i saw this

things still need to be cleaned up but i needed to break in the camshaft :banghead: now the drama begins >:( went to fire it up and POP,BANG, BOOM. yup the timing is not right. so i pull the dizzy cap and look yup its on #1 and tdc,#1 piston is up WTF :banghead: so my dumb ass pulls the dizzy out figuring its gotta be 180 out. DAMN were is pop when i need him? at the store of course >:( i get it all set back in and pops gets home, so i tell him whats going on and he says start it. NOPE NADDA, NOTHING. He procedes (sp)to check the firing order and its all f-up :banghead: this thing was in brads boat so it was wired for his motor. :mad: so we re do the firing order and set the dizzy back to tdc and WHAMO it fires right up, but, no oil pressure :o WTF we know this thing had 80psi when we primed it. oh yeah remember the dizzy was out. So out it comes again and sure enough the oil pump shaft fell out :banghead: :mad: so i get a magnet and go fishing and after about 15 minutes of dicking with it, i finally get it. We fire it back up and oh yeah 80psi heres a vid clip

I'm motivated, just have to wait between glass/resin cures. Once I get the left seat and the controls and wires run, then I have to fill the empty fuel tank and or at least 1/2 full so I can zero that new sender. Then it's back to wiring, steering and guage mounting. Just the little stuff that takes lots of time and doesn't look like you've done anything.
Then it's to the Honey-Do List(S).

not much progress today due to the 100* heat, but, i did get the inner valve springs put back in and set the timing at 36* instead of the break-in 31*. It revs clean and solid, i tried to figure out the electrical demons under the dash but had no luck :-\. oh well new gauges are in order. his a short vid after the spring install.

we took it out to buena vista for the shake down trip, it ran flaw less all weekend. gps'd at 62.7 with 30 gallons of fuel two 230 pound guys. i feel that mission acomplished (sp) a few water leaks that will have to be sorted out, and some small upgrades later. I'M ON THE WATER, YEE-HAW :D :D

well after a year or so of use it was time to get started on the bulk head. Liberty's came with a ski locker and the deck had come loose. I am putting a bulk head in and getting rid of the lockers.
this is verry nasty work and i really wanted to pay some one to do it but im cheap and can fuk it up a lot before i pay a grand to get it done.

i would prop it back up the way its supposed to be and make sure you glass it in solid or else your deck will flap like a fat ladies ass when you get in the rough water.
a good tip i got after the fact when i did mine is put 1/4" spacers (pieces of wood or whatever) around so the bulkhead isnt directly touching any thing....kinda free floating or suspended.
glass in patches between/around the spacers you have used...once the glass drys, pull out the spacers then glass all the way around. direct contact between the deck and the bulkhead is the cause of stress cracks....if you look at my deck, you can tell where my ski locker is without even looking under because of the stress cracks.

In the Bahner the bulkhead broke loose and eventually ended up breaking the center bow support which let the bow drop down ALOT :banghead:
they raced it that way for who knows how long :screwy: that was the first thing i had to repair......Get some support back in there ;)

Talk about going balls deep, as far as the bulkheads, there are better ways to do it that are mucho betta'.
First there is no reason at all to run cross bulkheads on a boat that is this low of profile, there is no added benefit to that much bracing, do yourself a huge favor and build some dividers out of plywood, (does not need to be marine grade) and go from the stringers up to the deck using some 3/4"X2" fir at the deck to brace area (this adds surface area), glass them at the top and through bolt them at the bottom, it will be super strong and user freindly.
I changed mine around from its origional configuration and not only did I gain some serious strength but it doubled the storage under the bow.
I think the reason it makes it so strong is that it supports the deck and the gunwales simultaniously, (also makes a killer spot to hang stereo equipment ;D )..

i did this in my Bahner, except i went a little extreme. I used 3/4" plywood 12"x12" glassed to the deck and 2x4's glassed to the plywood and through bolted the stringers..... I had to because off the dropped bow and it made it super strong and brought it back up to par.. i could have parked a truck on the bow after that ..(mini truck of course ;D)
I will do the same on my Carribean, except the 2x4's :screwy: ;D

i used west system because jrork had nothing but good things to say about it. i got all my stuff together then set about cutting 6 inch wide mat and i used 6 inch cloth over the top of that. i still need to do the other side of the bulk head but, needed this front side to kick so i didn't disturb the posistion of it. the resin kicks really slow but also gives over and hour of working time. all in all i am very happy with the west systems and will never use another brand. the gallon of resin was 94.oo and the resin was 39.oo so its not your home depot stuff. back to the pics.

hahahahah!!!! Been there done that. I stood back to admire my handy work and ran my fingers thru my hair and about .5 seconds into it I realized what I did. What a mess!!!! Don't be afraid of that "fast" hardener. It sets up faster but still leaves you time to work your magic. You're doing a great job.........john

NOT
its strong as hell the deck does not flex at all like it used to
jrork i looked at the fast hardener but, to tell you the truth :-[ i would have had to buy a different pump and i am too cheap for that. So i just used the stuff in the kit.

Oh hell I am going to any how >:D Place says the plastic mounting bracket is strong enough to hold the pump, I found out the hard way that it can vibrate or bounce loose (the pump) out of the bracket. What I did was to put a good sized piece of inner tube between the pump and the, in my case the transom, and then tightend the screws down on the bracket. A sort of shock absorber if you will, just my experience 8)

While this is somewhat true, if the bracket is mounted correctly the pump fits quite snug...On the raceboat, we had the same pump but for the trim tabs, not a nozzle and we simply drilled and tapped a 1/4-20 hole just above the pump with it installed and put in an allen bolt to keep the pump from creeping out...Never once had an issue.

i just screwed the braces to the dash peice because it will all be glassed to the hull. all the corners were rounded and wood sanded with 36 grit for a better bond.

i just want to say thank you for posting pics of this entire process. my dash is pretty dry and rotten and it has a crack thru it. the pictures and everything are a great help to knowing that im going to be on the right path of digging the rotten wood out from behind and glassing in new wood.
curious to know if you have any tips? and how you glassed upside down like that without getting it all over yourself.

liberty's tanks were through bolted to the bottom of the boat from the factory. they would use a button head bolt.

yeah, thats what the factory did....no extra fiberglass work to thicken it up. you could if you wanted to i guess.....overkill isnt a bad thing when mounting 15 gallon bombs :thumbup:

not very thick. best thing to do is to take a block, countersink a bolt into it, turn that upside down and glass that to the floor so you have a stud sticking out of the floor that you can mount to.

that wont work as those tanks are tucked up in the gunnels. the bottom of the libertys arent any thicker than any other boat.

why wouldnt it work? i made brackets/straps that hold the tanks in the gunnels and i have a mount on the floor and a mount on the top to hold it in. i dont have a pic of MINE but its like kinda like this with the bottom mounts being a block with a bolt in it glassed to the floor.

i think what im going to do is take a piece of sheet metal and put press studs into it... then glass in the plate to the boat...
the only prob is i have never glassed before...

ok, maybe this is hard for you to understand, but ill try to spell it out for you. :screwy:
the distance from the bottom of the boat to the gunnel is 11"
the tank diameter is 8.5"
that leaves 2.5" of clearance.
NOW factor in the 2" of lip on the fuel fill.
that leaves you 1/2" of room between the tank and the fuel fill. Where are you going to put this block with a bolt countersunk into it?
How do I know? I have the same exact boat. I've spent hours cussing at my boat removing and installing those tanks in my boat. myself.

Most manufacturers that used round fuel tanks through bolted the brackets right to the floor. Unless you have a light weight racing hull you should have no problems doing the same.
My Hondo has counter sunk holes on the bottom so when everything is assembled there isn't any bolt heads hanging down into the flow of water.

been a long time since i did any thing to this boat and now i have to :banghead:
took it with me to parker last month for a week and had a great time but, i noticed a few problems. the first one is a fuel issue, when i am WOT 5200rpm for more than 10 or 15 seconds the motor lays down. i let off the gas to about 48-4900 rpm and get back in the gas and its ok for a few more seconds.. the fuel system goes like this, both tanks -8 line equal lenth to a -8t then to a -8in -8out filter to the clay smith pump, -8 to fuel press regulator set at 6.5lbs to -6 at the carb.. now i dont know if im losing psi because i cant see the guage..

after running for a bit i shut it off and it has a hard start and fuel pressure guage shows 0psi. all fuel leaking past needle and seat flooding motor(i think?) so i am going to put a kit in the carb

it souldnt be to much of a prob.....you wont need all those parts ....they come with parts for all standard carbs....the trick is tuneing after your done with the rebuild :thumbup:

so here i go again :banghead: i want to race in the nostalgia jet class with this boat :screwy: i have my old 502 from the hornet less the top end, i sold it to Brad for the 888. im going to do this on pump gas now as im a broke dick and cant afford race gas. i bought a set of 95cc edelbrock heads that were in Canada that Gord brought down to me at the big river deal.. so this has been planned for a while, ive just been trying to get things together... I sent the heads with lakesonly to be gone through and have roller springs installed, (more on that later)
when i pulled the motor from the boat it ran fine prolly around 7-750 hp and its been sitting in short block form for a few years. Sunday i tore the short block down for inspection and i found a few things, 1st was the oil pump pick up tube had broken from its mount. all the bearings looked good until i got to the #7 rod where i found the bearing had rotated 45* and broke both tangs. i got really lucky that the bearing did not spin completely and take out the crank and rod.. so i think i will be able to get away with a polish on the crank and check the rod for being round.. i then got the crank out and i could see where the main caps were walking :o this thing has ARP main studs in it and it still walked (yes i beat this motor like it owed me money) i have pics on my phone and will try to post them up. i will keep updating this thread as i progress

I proceed to tell him to get me the bearings then, he then says hold on while he calls king bearing, i say they are closed because of they are in new jersy and the time difference between here and there. he insist that he call any way (wtf) ok ill play along ::) he comes back on and says they are closed :screwy: took my number and said would call me tomorrow with an answer...

I was gonna start by moving some of the bearings around to see if we could find the loosest one, then make necessary adjustments from there. Do all the crank journals mike the same? What does the bearing you've got setup with the largest clearance look like on the tight main?

So...the crank grew or the holes on the block shrunk? Generally it works the other way around. How'd that happen?
Has the block had the mains worked on (honed or bored)? I've seen more shlock main bore work than good before....(reason why I refuse to use a block on my own stuff if the original mains aren't acceptable) but you would've caught that on the last assembly if you measured everything like you're doing this time.

well its been a while and the bearings finally showed up, so i got back at measuring again and what i ended up doing was splitting the bearing halves. as you can see the king bearing looks to be of better quality than the others.

any way the the end results on the clearance is this

so i dropped the crank in got it all torqued down

and said shit i forgot the rear main seal, so out came the crank again ( for what seemed like the hundredth time)
i got the rear main mocked up and since the block had been align honed i had to trim the rear main so i had .040 hanging out on both sides for the seal crush. then i staggered it so the parting lines would not be even with the block. i sure hope this sum bitch don't leak. :o

set the crank in and installed the #1 piston along with the cam so i could start degreeing (sp?) the cam in

got the head on so i could find absolute tdc

the cam card called for a 101 isl and at straight up it came in at 99* so i had to retard it 2* (this is why you degree your cam) and got 101.5 witch is good enough..
checked the thrust clearance

you can see the intake valve just kissed the play doe and so i cut it in half and measured, plenty of clearance
