I just rememeber the "Speedvision" episose a couple yeard ago where they took a pretty decent 19 "daytona" hull put it upside down on a beater car frame and made a two seater sports car out of it ???
Are you sure that wasent monster garage and it wasent a ultra? That episode made me cry :'( , that was a nice jet boat.
Think I'm gonna bring the Flatty ! 8)Tom where is that picture taken? THAT is a Bitchin' Picture! :o ;D

That looks like a Superjet... :-\ Toms is not an SJ
tom, is that a bowl extension on that pump? and if so why? inquiring minds want to know ;)Like my Dad said the calgo wasn't very cooperative in the adjustment area due to some "custom" cable ends. But one of the things that has been fun/challenging at times is trying to come as close to the original set-up as possible. The nozzle is now withing a fraction of an inch of where it was before and the rear of the engine is less than two inches of where it was before (the difference being the small block). We were able to get the engine forward by utilizing a Berkeley JA pump shaft and a custom center section for the h-bar.
btw, out of all your projects i like this one the most
Ralph my buddy Glen scammed the cool Berk (long) droopy ,so as theres very little adjustment in the Calgo we had to :"lengthen" things to make everything come back together ,enter my "mad scientist kid " , he digs around in his "secret locker" of rat holed cool goodies and pulls out that "device" which made the whole shootin match fit !! That little motor BTW should make 400 hp and the jets got a lot of custom internals , if the boat works well and handles etc there make be a Blower motor in the works
I agree re this project ! we really appreceate the opportunity to rig this old race boat it has some very cool and unique features not the least of which is the bottom which is very different than my other 18 Sanger, I have as well as the complete Balsa inlay and full stringers (which I belive are unique to Sanger jets) Tom
Even though we got a lot of cool stuff with the Sanger , one half the Cav stuff was missing ,Josh made this Today out of a used prop shaft and a block of Aluminum ,Almost done !

We.ve given the ford s a thought but the "set up" is Chevy ;D
A litlle more progress from yesterday efforts, plus now we can tow it, SWTG Glenn I don't know how you made it here without having that boat pass you on the freeway ;)
I love the motor plates on this thing!!! O0 They really complement all the other curves and rounded shapes well!!!
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r319/jetboatperformance/ufo/DSC00264.jpg[/img]
As always great work Tom and Josh!!! I hope to someday meet you in person.
Thanks HJ, but we really can take credit for any of the beautiful gold anodized hardware as it came with the boat, but It has given me alot of new ideas.
Think brackets like that would hold up to the stress of a BBC? Really thinking about something like that for my sled down the road. Don't have to worry about too many clearance problems.
Those are BBC brackets (front Mounts), if you look just behind them you'll see the ugly ass adapter blocks I made to space the SBC out to fit in BBC location. This boat is BBC ready, and may not be far away from having one ;)
They might "let out" a little too much and get us in trouble with the lake cops BUT they sure look cool ! Tom
What the ........... :o

Check your PM's
Oh yeah, bitchin' looking boat! Get your driving suit on for Nost. Jet @ Ming next month!
Looks good Tom. Great job Josh. But home is looking a little full, you might need another new carport/boatbay soon ;DUHHH hmmm just built one ???
Get that puppy wet !!!!!!!Almost there , just a few more finishing touches , started modifying the old the blower guard, a little touch up ,some brush work "resto" on the lettering, some zip ties etc , made some progress today after my "honey doo's' Tom
Tommy, this boat/thread is one of my favorites you've had. That boat is bitchin and Josh & you have done a great job bringing that back to life. Congratsx2 an A+, just sitting back enjoying the craftsmen work their trade ;)
The guy that rigged this boat (or his pinstiper) had way to much time on his hands ;D Trimming and fitting the loader we chose today ,Batchin it today so I spent some more time on the Sanger !

go to sleep with a woody such as this?
Now how is one to go to sleep with a woody such as this? Way cool... :sly:
Mucho better, I figured you would just flip it. Is that foot throttle really bolted through the floor? I would expect a stringer mount.Ron ,yes the Pedal (and the "halon") are thru bolted with countersunk stnls screws , not uncommon for some older boats , my Schiada was done the same way (talk about crowded cockpits) ;D
Congratulations!, How cool is that?, a new family member and boating in the same day, a charmed life I tell you! Thanks Crewchief !!
BTW Congrats to my "youngin" and his wife today baby girl !! God I hope shes a boater ;D

whats with the quagga bow dealio
8100? RPM's? :o
That must have been music to the ears
Looks like your trying to tame a wild animal there Tom. Its a race boat hull , it only needs to have 2 throttle settings (on and off), stop trying to turn it into a cruiser . :screwy:
JK , You know I'm watching and learning from this project, and you know why I need to. Crazy rocker bottom boats :banghead: .
WHOOO HOOOO ;D Huge progress today ! Pics Vid and results tommorow Tom
Just for reference...... on Jim's boat we can cruise 65-70 mph, over wakes, turns, weird river spots, and it has no trouble. And that's usually with the diverter up a few notches. Can you tell me what the entire set up consist of to reference where 2 notches is .
Just saying the two boats with two different attributes probably need two different set ups

No prices without pictures. ;D
Why would you want to see pictures? Are you planning to run adjustable plates and turn left? I just want to see yours run so I will know what to do or not do ;)
This one has found a new home a bit to the north of where it is now. Picking it up in a week or so......... ;D
Thanks Tommy
Shit, it' looks like me and Tom could be brothers. Same hairline, big brush.......
;) 18 @ heart Bro , that thin spot on top is a solar collector for a sex machine !
Thanks guys. Unfortunately we just ran into snow by Weed. Gonna try to get off this hill and call it quits at Yreka. Not as far as we hoped for.
;) 18 @ heart Bro , that thin spot on top is a solar collector for a sex machine !
Damn John! That old gel sure cleaned up nice! Good job, oh yeah, THANK YOU again for the seat delivery.
Jealous!
Other then the going roundy round, I love that hull and wanted that before Tom rebuilt it. You and Jr will do it proud!I'm with you.
Does anyone know if that boat spent a lot of time at echo lodge?
it looks very familliar!
Does anyone know if that boat spent a lot of time at echo lodge?

PTO is on the "Brown dog to young Ian , can't wait to see the UFO scootin cross the water Good to talk this morning ! Take care of that little one !
Here is my update for the day..... currently gapping the spark plugs and going over all the fittings to make sure they are all tight! That must meen that I'm close to making VROOM VROOM noises!! YAHOOOO!
Again thank you to EVERYONE who has helped me collect parts for this build. 6 months ago buying the parts to put the boat together wouldnt have been an issue. Then the downhill spiral at work hit hard. The boat would not be at the point that it is right now without the help of you guys (and my dad with a garage full of boat stuff!) I cant wait to get the boat out on the water with you people! FINALLY!
Thanks, Ian
I hope you all like pictures as much as i do!

And for the record for all to see............. I love my son  Such a fine young man!!!
First off, let me say thank you to all of you guys for helping me get this damn thing done... one week before mardon! It is much appreciated. The boat ran, well... perfect. If "boring" could be used as a good term, this would be where is applies. Right off the trailer, it ran very very well. I believe i got my moneys worth out of the boat today alone. I have very little into it, and the results far exceeded my expectations. Its no drag boat, but its fast enough to scare me a bit! The cavitation plates are a trip! They completely change the attitude of the boat, from nose high, to bow dragging at the same rpm and diverter input. it'll take awhile to perfect, but i made a big improvement in just the ammount of time running the boat today! I cannot wait for mardon now! yahoo! Thanks again!
now the fun stuff! Pictures!

The UFO had distinct similarities to my Older Sprint when I had them side by side BUT.. Josh and I still believe the keel for nearly the entire length of the hull is "dropped" about 1/4 to 3/8 inch, look real hard at the approximate 20 wide section of the center (betwen the Balsa sections ) to see this! Harlan is by far the "man" but the person I was working with that gave me the most insight into this was Jeff Bennett (the guy is a boat bottom God) Tom

Skips Precision Marine in Redlands is a couple shops down from mine (I hang out over there at lunch to get away once in a while ;D ). Anyway, Skip and His Brother Troy ran Riverside Boat & marine in the 70's-80's and was the Sanger dealer in the area. Both were involved with race boats at that time and might know something about it. I''ll try to drag him down to the shop to show him some pics because he don't do computers.
Thanks guys. Yep, we're getting close. Fighting fuel pressure issues though. I hate to mess up those beautiful plates but I may need to clearance it so we can run a mechanical pump. Measuring the Carter 170gph I have, we all we need is a slight slot to accomadate the wide flange and it would fit. Get rid of that electric "is it gonna work or not" worry.
Bust away Glenn. I'm still learning all this stuff. We're running a Holley :HP150 billet pump and a Holley regulator. Other than a short section of 3/8" rubber from each tank to a tee, its all -8AN to the pump, regulator and to the carb.
The reason I'm getting concerned is that it worked perfect leading up to the weekend and all day Friday. From that point on it has great pressure (8 or so (it drifts a touch)) until he leans on it. From the is lays down to less tha 2 pounds and the boat won't get up on plane, Makes for a looong idle across that reservior.
With some time we'll swap out the last of the rubber lines as well but we just ran out of time. Besides, it was working fine up to Friday. Thanks for the help Glenn. Take care
I think we'll try to rob the Brendella of the lines from my tanks to the tee and see if that cures it. That will give it full -8 througout the entire fuel system and make it comparable to mine (cept fo the regulators). That should eliminate the uncertainty there....
no post jacking but what the hell is that
Hmmmm, wonder what my motor would be like in the Sanger.... ;D ;D ;D
WHAT ABOUT A 427" WITH MECHANICAL FI!!!? ......Jan, where's the check book!
I vote ALL OF THE ABOVE! thanks ol man for my 22 and 1/2 birthday present!
ian
John,
I think you need to put some parental controls on your computer LOL
Hi Ian! ;D
GT
Hi Glenn!!! you're a tin can boat guy, maybe you will know the answer...Grants Pass race this year?? i'd like to go see the festivities if it happens, promised Jeff id come watch him race... gonna have to fulfill that promise even if he isnt here to race anymore.
Back to the normal broadcast... FI motor in the sanger!!!
Ian
maybe the college will pay off, and he will buy it back from you someday
You're a good man John Rork, I don't care what GT says about you...
You NEEDED a new project Grandpa , thats what keeps you goin' What woman Jan is indeed
I've kind of got my eye on one of Rons Cheyenes now ;)
Hmmmm, wonder what my motor would be like in the Sanger.... ;D ;D ;D
I have a feeling you'll find out John! ;D
Ray
You NEEDED a new project Grandpa , thats what keeps you goin' What woman Jan is indeed
NEWS FLASH!!!!
I've been able to track down the gentleman that built this boat! We're trading voice mails but regardless, we'll soon be able to reconstruct the full history of this boat. Too F'n cool!!!!
Will do Glenn. I can't wait. Havent managed to connect but when he responded to my message with "if this is UFO II, call me" I had goosebumps. He didnt even hesitate.
Could you help me and tell me about what year it was when you first saw this boat and what town/city that was?
Take care
I know the feeling John.....reminds me when I found the original owner of the Rootin Tootin Raspberry.
LOL Brad, I bet! While this boat doesnt have "racing" heritage, it has historical value in spades! Sounds like it's fully documented to the point theyre putting together a "portfolio" for Ian.
I'll share what I know soon.
Glenn, Ian mentioned you might still have the original droop and nozzle from this. If you do, I would be very much interested in buying it from you. Hal has the Calgo steering but unfortunately is using it so that will be tough come come up with but I'm gonna try,'
when Rich asked if I knew “how famous that boat is?”………………
Come on, its been 12 hours.... give us some more :banghead:
Okay, we finally hooked up by phone. Super nice guy. We probably talked for almost 2 hours and though this isnt anywhere near the whole story, it gives you a smattering of what we talked about. I cant wait to see the pictures cuz there were so many custom pieces built and unfortunately dont exist today. Dont know what happened to those but I would love to see them. I'll post them up as soon as I get them (though I suspect it will be a while).
Here goes
The boat was bought as a bare hull from Sanger in 1977 thru Bruce Halloway of GTH Marine after Jack Davidson had stopped selling bare hulls to the public. The color was black with gold and orange stripes in the typical Sanger fashion.
He had full stringers installed along with the wood flooring.
The motor was a blown 468 with twin dominators running 22% over.
The boat had a Lenco multi disc clutch with air shifter to activate it.
The pump was built by Dave Bostrom of GT Boats (was GTH Marine at the time) with a AQ shaft, stainless A impeller with a “fuel” cut. Custom cut shoe and loader. Double drilled bowl and long droop with a race nozzle with inserts. He said at the time, it was the very best of the best in parts. The pump was fully pinstriped inside and out. Unfortunately, the pump is no longer in this boat but the suction housing is the original one given that there’s pinstriping in the intake area.
Mike Farley did the paint including the pinstriping, numbering and murals. I’ll be honest, the name didn’t ring a bell to me but as soon as I started surfing the web I found many of his works on both boats as well as race cars. Gonna have to do more research here.
The trailer was custom built for the boat with completely ground and smoothed welds, braided wiring (still present) and pinstriped throughout. The hubs were drilled for both Chevy and Ford pattern.
A Halon fire suppression system was installed with hardlines throughout. Nozzles on the gunnels as well as mounted solid to the motor on the heads.
The Cav plate hardware was built by George Shilala of Finishline.
All the custom machine work, rail kits, tiller for the Calgo steering as well as the aluminum seat frames were done by his friend Don La Franchi. Don’s a master sheetmetal man as well as a self taught machinist and has such attention to detail that he was knicknamed many years ago “Sano Don”.
A good friend that worked at Roy Brizio Street Rods assisted in getting all the hardware anodized (including the AN fittings) in matching colors. The wiring as well as the sparkplug wires were all custom colored to match the paint. The boat was sponsored by Sanderson Headers so needless to say, he ran those headers.
The boat competed in the 1979/1980 season of the ISCA circuit ultimately winning the national championship in both Custom Boat and Comp Boat. It was so successful and dominating that the judges were having to break out the catagories as many protested it’s dominance. He still has the plaques as well as trophies and it was incredible to listen to him read off all the awards he still has.
At the time it was named the champion, it was the first Jet boat to when the championship.
It was retired as I mentioned at previously at Lake Shasta with much fanfair. He sparingly used it for a year or so before he ended up selling the hull to a friend for $7000 in around 1983.
He still has many of the judges sheets, trophies, awards, display boards as well and 100’s of pictures and is working on putting together a portfolio for my son along with a few parts that he still has.
He has some great stories like when he was at either the Oakland Roadster Show or the Cow Palace (I cant remember which he said) when there was a protest that his engine was a dummy and didn’t run. He was given 3 hours to prepare it (never kept oil or gas in it so there were no chances of leaks) and swap out the exhaust (didn’t want to blue the chrome Sandersons). He got that all done and had some zoomies mounted up and much to the disappointment of his competitors, fired the engine. The boat was alongside one of the walls and the exhaust from the zoomies blew some banners loose from the walls and they came down floating down on the crowd and show cars.
I’m gonna continue to search some of this out but regardless, this is fun stuff.
Well, it's terrible fat but running. Found out that my mix screws were off and loading it up at idle but goes those even'd out and much better. Now if it wasnt so crappy in the weather department we'd have something!

Why are there 4 exhaust tips in the transome?
That is too cool a blown boat being pulled by a Caddy :screwy:
