Ok so basically I ended up with a 1983 tahiti that came from "blue 2 skip 2 me" as all of you know...the boat isn't much of a project, but I guess you can say I'm "making it mine" type of deal...last summer I kind of ran it they way skip "luckie stiff" set it up...which there was nothing wrong with the way he set it up, but some bolt on type of stuff...to start I bought the polished intake off of sam it was a weind stealth polished intake...then me and boost "brian" made and exchange and I ended up with a better dizzy...and this week I been wroking on the machine gun kelly stringers by plugging the holes...I know I know no pics...I will try to get this taken care of by sunday...also skip came through big on some ski tows...he said I half to give him head for which is cool, but I'm really starting to feel it by working on a boat again...I'm hoping by sunday I can be carpeting the boat...more pics to come have a good evening guys...also more to come on holley rebuilding and the 180* out on the dizzy...guess I need to quit drinking and being a mechanic

Uh, you can still be a mechanic if ya quit drinkin....I think. You guys drink alot of beer, I watched a guys dad years ago drink himself to death at 43.
-
Skip came through big on some ski tows...he said I half to give him head for which is cool,
Dude, I don't understand you guys down there.......I'm mean, Skips a looker no doubt about it but...... We kinda keep our "negotiating" a bit more private up here.

Lets see some progress ?? where the Pics ?
x2
-
Reason for no pics is I get going on the thing and don't stop till its dark...then I think shit I forgot to take pics...plus my work area is chaos and I'm not proud of that shit...I will try to snag some photos real soon guys...also the negotiations are public unless it comes to money then we go discreet
-
sorry guys about the night time pictures i told you i keep goin gtill dark...just an fyi i carpeted the stringers and center floor and bed linered the outside area...and some new eye candy on the motor...and i have a ton of chaos going on in the photos as well maybe ill clean up tomorrow and get some daytime photos...but then again my dad is in the hospital from an atv crash so ill probably be hanging with him...he has a torn shoulder and 3 broken ribs...one rib punctered his lung and i guess deflated it and bruised the piss out of it...and the dr says he still has alot of blood draining from it as well...i know he will be ok but i am sure he can use the company

Todays frustrations of owning a jet boat
This all started by purchasing a polished intake manifold, and then you gotta get gaskets, and then you gotta install it, and then you realize how blinged out it is, and then your like shit the boat needs some loven, and then you do carpet, and then your like maybe since I'm upgrading the intake maybe you should upgrade the ignition, and then you get another ignition, and then you realize the carb needs rebuilt, and then you finally turn a corner, and then you put it all together, and then NO SPARK, and then you pull the dizzy, and then you drop the oil pump rod, and then you hear a clunk in the bottum of the pan where the rod landed, and then............GET DRUNK! Something is up with the dizzy no workey I'm probably doing something wrong though

I need to say something and please don't take it wrong, re; your throttle cable routing, see if you can take some of the bend out of the area where the cable attatches to the bracket, if you're going to have a cable failure, that is where it would happen, that is the reason I run mine from the rear of the boat... ;)
I had a cable failure several years ago, but it broke just inside the end of the housing, right where it connects to the bracket, lets just say when it broke, I got to see how fast the boat would go with a throttle stuck WFO, scary fo sho O0

Once again Josh nice great job now get the boat in the water and give us a MPH ;D your starting to get like me picky on all the little sit.
-
yeah i been kicking the idea around on coming from the rear it does look cleaner...it was zip tyed properly for the bend before the break and wfo deal this is why i always run a double return spring...yes it can be uncomfortable but i like being safe...in regards to the alt i like the idea...now wheres the boat names boys?

I was toying with the same idea, if my cable needs replacing ( dont know yet ) i will get a longer cable and reroute it..
How about .......Bluebeer ;D
Josh its all ways better when you come behide ;)
It's behind , and yes fords do come behind chebbys :D

reminds me of the old saying liquor in the front poker in the rear...so i got this other new bright idea...i have no type of bulkhead from the interior to the harmonic balancer...and that harmonic balancer chewed up one of my toolboxes pretty good one day...and from what skip told me that balancer has claimed a number of his stufff...anyway i found an old school toolbox today and i think im gonna mount it in front of the balancer to stop anything from sliding back and i can put tools in it...what ya guys think?
-
I think you're gay, there I said it. Oh you meant about the boat? I have a seat for you, $75 and I'll bring it to Mead, then I can pick up your buckets and get them all covered to match your boat. Don't Monday rig that thing! O0
-
heres the thing about being in my early 20's...i have a ton of friends who dont own boats, and they see how how many seats are in my boat...then they multiply it by 2...this is why i just want the 2 seats...even then they think 3 should be riding in my boat...eff that i tell them how chep these boats are, but nooo they want like a 26 foot cat or something...2 seats = me and the gf = perfect....eff the rest...tomorrow weather permitting i will look and see if the box looks good there if not its still going in the boat just not mounted...cause it is small verves my next size up that is considerabbly large...skip as far as the recovering goes when i get the extra scratch the seats are going straight to you...i would elect for a different color...
-
Ok sugarshorts, I get that your friends are terminally cheap bastards, you just need to tell them NO
I'm just busting your balls. A cool looking tool box wouldn't be bad.
-
its one of them old school metal ones like your grandpa would have that has old rusty tools and toilets peices in or something like that...or an old oiler deal before aerosol came out...pretty cool looking i think...

its nice to know somebody will have tools when my shit breaksdown
Or does that red "tool box" just hold beer ;D

the red toolbox is fully equiped with tools...i mounted it there to keep the balancer from claiming flip flops, chewing tobaccoo, beer, coolers, chairs...or anything else...i thought it would look cool there and slso serve a purpose...call it what you may but its there to stay till i get it powder coated...im done cept for detailing probably be testing next week weather permitting

im all the colors of the rainbow...the red isnt bad because the gel actually sports a red pinstripe all the way around it, but the seats...in the future will be sprayed a blue after i send em to skip for recovering of the proper colors, but right now...they are nice enugh to rest my tooshie :-*

just a quick update...i decided to order a pertronix 2 ignition system for the boat and got that installed...last weekend at mead i had some popping and crackling issues so hope it helps! and then i decided do some plugs new cap new rotor...im pretty sure i was selling myself short on the single points ignition so i will let you guys know how it goes....some questions on this issue...my dizzy was a vacuum advance and i dont know if im supposed to leave it or remove it...plus lots more of info that annoyone knows pertaining to these type of systems...i was doing a spark plug read and liked nothing about what i saw looks like i had too much timing in the motor...some of the plugs werent really tight either so...new plugs go in...im going to leave everything alone till i test run it...cylinder 4 spark plug was completely black! i dont know what to take on that, but i hope that cylinder is ok, just thinking possible exhaust leak? any little info would be a help
sorry bout the novel guys!
-
FWIW, I don't think you should try to utilize the vacuum advance, they will not do anything for you, they need the extra vacuum to pull typically the last 12* of advance, the only time a vacuum advance will work is when the carb is too small.
My recomendation would be to leave it disconnected (no port cap on the distributor vacuum pot) and plug the port on the carb..
Or pick up a lock out bracket for the plate, either way time it for advance above 2500 RPM and don't worry about what you have at idle. I would say that you should have approx. 34-36* of total advance and all should be at least close....
As for the black plug, a compression check would be advised at this point. It may have been just a fuel fouled plug or bad wire ???
It almost sounds like you are having a valve issue what with the popping and whatnot, probably #4?
Good luck!
GT
-
cylinder 4 was most definately the bad plug...that side of the motor the exhaust doesnt sound all that great...and i was assuming maybe exhaust leak...however valve could be a be another issue compression check was my next move...i was actually a little scared to find out, but it needs to be done...maybe i could borrow a cylinder head from chromey...jk jk jk...
dont change that channel

Edit
D3ve heads
take the loader out and try a rock grate, you may be loading the pump too hard. i doubt it will work but its free to try ;)
-
And a 4* wedge in what direction? :)
The RPM deal is odd...Next time she is at the water, neutral the pump with the reverse gate and give it some some hell, find out what RPM she tops out at...
If it tops out at say 4200 RPM, the loader is not the issue, its the motor.
If the motor sounds different out of one side, something is amiss...Stupid question, have you double checked the firing order?
GT
-
Plugs were all fairly consistant yesterday...one question is the valve train inhibiting me in any way...wedge is intalled for more pin angle aiming upwards! Still I have changed so much and still only getting 42-43 hundo on the tach...timing is at about 37* firing order should be correct but I can have a look see! The headers sounding different like before is gone! One pipe on the header had a decent hole in it!
-
Dumb question #2 :) How are you checking the WOT timing?, I think you still have a vacuum advance, is this accurate?
The vacuum advance is screwing you hard, you need to eliminate the vacuum advance and redo the timing.
Lemme explain. ;) If you are checking the total advance on the trailer at say 2500 RPM with the vacuum advance hooked up, that is where the problem is, you say 37* total advance, but if that was with the vacuum hoooked up, you just screwed yourself out of about 12* (making the total advance 25*) which is short....There is very little vacuum on a jet at WOT.
Am I making any sense? Always look for the simplest thing first.......Got any idea of the header temps on a run? How do the plugs look as far as color? On a pump gas deal, I like a nice root beer color, sort of like a toasted marshmallow ;)
GT
-
Vacvacuum advance hasn't been hooked up in a while...btw you aren't supposed to time it with the vacuum line hooked up anyway...plugs aren't quite rootbeer but not far off...plugs still indicate not enough timing but any more timing and after the motor warms up it doesn't wanna start all that great! Vacuum gauge at idle reads 13-14 if I remember right...honestly I don't see timing being the issue, but I have been wrong before
-
Vacvacuum advance hasn't been hooked up in a while...btw you aren't supposed to time it with the vacuum line hooked up anyway...plugs aren't quite rootbeer but not far off...plugs still indicate not enough timing but any more timing and after the motor warms up it doesn't wanna start all that great! Vacuum gauge at idle reads 13-14 if I remember right...honestly I don't see timing being the issue, but I have been wrong before
Just to make sure were on the same page (of the same book LOL), the vacuum advance has to be hooked up if you're using it for total advance, the disconnected thing is only for base timing, (different animal all together) anyway, dont use it, only use the built in 12* on the mechanical, I may have missed it, but are you using points or a Pertronics/electronic deal?
Just using the process of elimination...Other obvious yet stupid questions, are the butterflies opening 100% (with the foot throttle) and do you have any idea what the valve timing is?
GT
-
Let's just forget about the vacuum advance all together not being used at all...petronix kit has been installed! The dizzy is advancing all the way initial was 11* total after 25hundo was roughly 37*
Never checked for full opening of the butterflies however I moved the pedal back 3inches cause I'm signifigangly shorter then skip to ensure they are....but never crawled back there and looked will check tomorrow!
Valve timing I am unaware of the furthest I have been into this motor was intake change and valve covers off!
Who knows maybe a cam/lifter/spring swap is in order!
-
I am going to go out on a limb and say...................I don't have a clue what your problem is, but when you find it, you will giggle like a school girl. ;D
I would really like to see that thing run at about 4500+/- RPM (providing the tach is correct).
GT

The headers sounding different like before is gone! One pipe on the header had a decent hole in it!
Really? Never woulda sent them had I know there was a hole!

No ray the old headers did...not the ones you sent

Oh, whew. lol

anyway terry calls me yesterday and says bring that puppy over let's do a compression test...cool I'm on my way...so here it goes tried to get her to roll over and nothing not even a click...ok put another spare battery in...still nothing then we started messing with nordic 454's boat...nice ride btw...after getting brandon all dialed in we start dicking with mine again...tracing wires all kinds of stuff...call it quits for the night...today start back up on it and nothing jumping wires all kinds of stuff...nothing...ok pull starter...try using jumper cables nothing...new starter time...get new starter in and whoa she's a spinner again...so after 5 hours between the 2 days on this thing we can finally do a compression test which as follows
#1 130
#2 130
#3 140
#4 145
#5 145
#6 145
#7 145
#8 140
Those numbers are the actual cylinder numbers...not to shabby I was bracing for one or more lower cylinders but I'm thinking with them numbers I might have some higher compression heads that might bring this thing up...if I do this though will be a new stick going in lifter pushrods and will need to locate rocker arms...any opinions?
-
Leave it alone .....

Depends Josh. Personally, but you know how I roll, I'd toss the C9's on, a new bumpstick with some hardened pushrods, 1.73 rollers and see what happens. (I think you're fine, depending on cam, just be sure you have enough valve/piston clearance). The compression numbers will rise a little I'm sure, or some will go away rather quickly and violently!
J/K >:D Don't do it without really following through the entire engine. The front two cylinders being over 10% lower than the rest indicates something, not sure what though. Need my brain werkin on full capacity. But not bad. They're right, leave it be. Over the winter is the time to do something like this, and consider oversize valves, seats and maybe porting those puppies (What makes them special anyway, is their usefullness in heavy porting, from what I just found out).
Any added pressure on the top end is gonna be felt hardest by the bottom end well before the seat of the pants even gets to enjoy the ride. Always remember that.

nordie, leave it alone................. :sly:
go down to your local pic your part and get another 460 (maybe 150 bucks) and start building. If you start modding this motor you will always want more then you will blow it up. and have a broken piece of shit.........
just my .02
-
Josh-
Like the others have said, leave it alone and enjoy your boat. You have to remember that motor is a cast piston 429 with unknown history.
-
Im with everyone else. If you want to have a monster motor, then like Ralph said buy a block and start buildng one. That way you know what all the internal, how old they are and wont have any nasty surprises out on the water somewhere.
Your also able to continue using the boat while you gather all the parts and build it up.
-
Yes however I think I should be able to lean on this thing a little bit I'm not even hitting 60mph...and only getting 4200rpm...I'm not saying some monster however 65 would be nice...if I am going to build a monster it wouldn't be a ford anyway...

in that case just use nitrous >:D

There may be a nice polished intake in your near future for sale ralph...really nice bbf mounts possibly too...

damn....i thought there were pictures of naked biatches in here..... >:(

Well a few winter month updates because i can
first i listened to ralph and bought a core 460 for me to get to rebuilding i got it down to bare block and this is why

looked on the bearings and got a clevite part number and turns out they are standard no crank cut so i can have the crank cut thank god...cylinders look pretty good and the pistons are a ford part number and they are hyper's booo, but there is no overbore size on them so i am guessing it is a standard block as well...
next is i am still boating so i decided to do some small changes as some of you know but here are some pictures

Josh motor detail looks good  whats up with the crank? BTW nice video the driver looks to be having a good time.

Crank is from a back-up motor I bought a month or so ago but I agree the crank can be yard art, but scrap yard is more like it ...id imagine that those 2 rods are junk as well...so I got some d00e rods if anyone needs them going a different direction anyway....

So today being off work i decided what a nice day not to spend outside working on the boat! so anyway last spring i had some stuff powder coated, and was very dissapointed in the quality of work so today i was back at it....i prepped my scoop, mini droop, and some other misc opjects and got to painting....also installed some new goodies i got in last week

Nordie-
When you get a new cable, I believe you can get one with a new helm and all. West Marine in Henderson has the shit you need for $184, new cable, rack, helm. I'm sure Rex or CP also has them.
Here you go sugar tits:

would you recommend me getting rid of the rotary style, and go with the rack n pinion...i never studied the differences the steering is hard to steer with, but i made a hard left at the AVI and the bastard stuck on me i consider that a blessing in discuise and dont want to push the issue and being safe i am ok with that as well! hoping to get some responses on this cause nordie needs a new cable

I don't know enough to make a qualified statement, BUT I know that oh, 90% of the boats out there are R&P style. Mine is, and I like it.

I think the button heads do clean it up but I dont think there is enough "meat on the head" to stand up to the task .
Specially with the leverage the droop is going to put on it.
This is one of those places (IMO) I would always use a stud....
stud...

This is where i disagree...if i am already taking the boat out that means i still gotta put gas in it and stuff, why would i ask someone for gas money....bring some beer, and chicks they just gotta look good! and a friendly gesture is always welcome ;)
-
Amazing how those seats match the boat! Looks great Nordie! A whole lot better than two seats and a tool box, lol.
You've taken that thing quite a ways over the winter huh? ;D
You've gotten more accomplished than I have for sure! Did get the Diverter on the Pickle, cable replacement got rained out today, but we'll hit it tomorrow or Monday.

Thats what I meant. If your buying gas, they can bring the beers. If your giving rides to girlies....Well we already know what they are bringing ;)
