Title: Southwind resurrection
Post by: Bugginout on April 24, 2018, 02:55:48 PM
Been under a tree since 08! Stoked for this new member of the family! Gonna bring it back to life. A lot of people know this boat I was Facebook famous before I ever made it home.

It was built by Papp in 04 Tom and Hobart cress raced it. Emailed Dougans to find out if there’s a build sheet on the engine. No response as of yet. It has dart pro one heads, solid roller cam, t&d shaft mounted rockers and a Jesel belt drive (I pulled the valve covers and exhaust) I’m gonna replace the valve springs. Engine spins over by hand. Carbs were uncovered for years! I’ve cleaned it up and put the jet and pop off back together and re plumbed the pop off lines. And plumbed the nitrous and fuel system. Need to have a drive line made. Rebuild kits for both dominators are in route. So we shall see how the engine is. Gonna try and fire it up next weekend. Pump was put together by Papp and looks great. Have to fix the bulk head fiberglass and some of the floor. Replace the steering cable and maybe the rack. It seems to have withstood 10 years of abandonment well. It will be well loved by me and girls!! It’s the newest member of our family!! I’ll probably need all the help and insight anyone can offer! Here’s some pics after 2 days of hard work. Up at 6 am till sunset both days lmao.

Wow. I can't believe it got left out like that. It was in Hot Boat not too long before 08. I'll see if I can find it.
Good luck getting it put back together.

I have that issue. So Tom and Hobart are friends of mine we’re all local 440 wireman. I was gonna get the boat like 4 years ago but it didn’t work out. So the funny part of this story is my wife came Home with the issue of hot boat magazine with the boat in it! (We also have an eliminator 234 edge as well as well as many jet boats in the past so I love old hot boat mags!) so I see the boat and call Hobart and we make a deal and my girls and I haul ass to pick up the southwind. I showed up and it was full to the steering wheel with wet leaves and branches. It was heartbreaking. But I’m gonna bring it back.

So the bulkhead doesn’t look original it’s kinda half assed. Doesn’t look like it supports much is it a must have in a southwind?

Pulling the engine! Got the carbs off and it was a pond inside the intake lmao! Damn shame everything looks brand new inside other wise. Hopefully the pistons are still good I don’t have much hope for the block. 3 cylinders full of water!

I see some of these guys putting boats together and damn they got long money! (Happy for them not hating) I’m more of the redneck yacht club! I built heads as a kid in some real go fast spots. So I’m gonna put it all together myself. But I need a machine shop to line hone and deck my block. (I’m a wireman now) think the crank rods etc are gonna be good enough to run. I’ll mic it all.

Man, I haven't seen that boat in a long time. Funny little story...

There was a call-out for a magazine shoot they were going to do at Elsinore via Hot Boat. A guy that was on Hotboat.com was coordinating everything and he sent me a PM to come join the shoot. I told him my boat wasn't show quality but I was getting ready to do the rebuild soon. He told me to bring it down anyways they were short on jet boats. So I show up early and see Tom pulling out the freshly built Southwind TD 19. I am like damn that's clean so I went to check it out and told Tom to stay for the magazine shoot. He was there just to test the boat.

I have the magazine somewhere, I think Tom's Southwind and my Southwind (yellow 18') made it in the magazine in the same month. A couple days later a friend of mine calls me and said hey did you and your girlfriend break-up? I said no, why. I saw your boat in Hotboat and some blonde is in it with you. I laughed and said that was the model you dummy. I will put up some photo's of the shoot if I can find them. I think I have a picture of the 19' at the Classic Boat Beach Bash too, Futs took me for a ride. Always, liked that boat.

That is an awesome story! I would appreciate seeing the pictures. Been  trying to bring it back for almost 3 years. It's not as pretty as it once was... should be just a little bit quicker though.

I found a couple pictures from the shoot but none of the Southwind 19' (I will keep looking and if I find them I will post them) just of my Southwind 18'. Another funny story is that a friend of mine drove up to the shoot from San Diego to come hang-out with me and he ended up knowing the model. My buddy brought up a 12 pack with him and she hung out with us the entire time and pretty much drank most of the beers in between shoots. lol

They had another Asian chick there too, she was supposedly Bret's assistant. Since only one of the models showed the assistant did some of the modeling shoots as well. If the date on these pictures is correct then the next weekend or two was the Classic Boat Beach Bash. So Bret is out at the Classic Boat Beach Bash there taking pictures of the boats on the beach and I guess he remembered me from the shoot and told me to come look at the pictures on his camera. He holds up his camera and there's a video of the Asian chick all naked and he is rubbing her ass. lol The good old days.

I thought this one was really cool of Tom and Bob going at it (of course I didn't take the picture but I thought it was cool). I think it was posted on Hot Boat back in the day.
