Title: Southwind Tunnel project continued......
Post by: jyeager on April 13, 2013, 03:41:46 PM
So Here i am again. tearing into my SWTD once again.
Last summer i ran it really hard knowing the stringers were soft.(bad idea on my part)
I could feel the boat kinda twist out of the hull when i punched it. Plus i could move them from side to side pretty good. AND found cracks along the stringers. So after tom Papp i decided to get to work and replace them.
Also i figured wile i was at it i would put a low pro and do a few other things i couldn't last spring.
Big thanks to TRG, todd for helping me out with this project.
Here we go.

After striping the boat down i took a skill saw to the stringers and bulkheads.

Got the new balsa and stringers mocked.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2F48637991-3507-4F71-94BD-BC3DF81510B6-6405-0000125C828D41C0_zpsdb0cc857.jpg&hash=46268942b5f7ee3fe8cb1e1161b5c79c649d25a4) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/48637991-3507-4F71-94BD-BC3DF81510B6-6405-0000125C828D41C0_zpsdb0cc857.jpg.html)

I scratched up the floor with 36 gritt again and layed down a layer of 2 oz CSM on either side. Then layed the balsa on it and put resin on top.
Dont do that hahah. found that out later i should have done that after it cured. But then i put wax paper down on top and put weight down on the balsa.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi216.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc168%2Fjyeager04%2F32743E19-50F0-4E05-800F-6C065886852E-6405-0000125CA112656C_zps86597737.jpg&hash=6a17f3114feca17aababc06a0ef8cb356d352ff6) (http://s216.photobucket.com/user/jyeager04/media/32743E19-50F0-4E05-800F-6C065886852E-6405-0000125CA112656C_zps86597737.jpg.html)

After i made a quick jig to keep the stringers in place. The stringers i am using are Kiln dried douglas fur 1X4s about 14 1/2 long.
once i squared up everything and got it where i wanted, sanded the floor down with 36 where i was going to put glass. then I wetted out some 2 oz strips and set them down on the wet glass. Then put as much weight as i could on it.

Thanks bud. Glass work sucks, but it's not that bad. Keep going. You'll be stoked when you're done and you can say you did it your self.
