I am new to this website and have only had my boat for 2 summers. I was trying to find this topic without creating this topic again. Because I am sure this is a pretty common question. But unfortunately I have learned the hard way, when it comes to my boat. ( well in life also) So I thought I would ask. I know that you cant run the engine for very long out of water, being that it is cooled by the water. But does it do any other damage starting it out of the water? And for example, just for quick adjustments of the timing. Does it need to be hooked up to the hose?

If you must run the engine out of the water disconnect the drive shaft for things like breaking in a cam , checking timing etc...
Run a hose for sure. Start engine then start flow of water if you have water injected headers make sure you don't go full blast turn.it on slow.water psi will over come ball and spring in basset tee andn you'll be pushing water thru pipes @ idle. Water shouldnt.come on till 2800 rpm to the pipes when.under way.
Running the engine even with a hose to the motor and pump will.not be sufficient to cool the pump

I build my pumps, and knowing the tolerances, I wont run it on a hose or dry. Too easy to damage the pump.

If you disconnect the pump, you shouldn't have any problems. But depending on your engine mount system, it may not be that easy.
By the way, you'll get more results if you search from the home page vs just one section or from a thread. :thumbup:
