OK so this surprised me a little, thought some of you would get a kick out of it...
About two and a half years ago I helped out my bud who has a super clean Saber Jet cruiser that had been sitting in his dads yard for about 9 years or so....I took it to my house and quickly discovered the floor and stringers were rotted and it would not run because of a laundry list of problems..
I had replaced all of the rotted wood, new carpet, fixed some broken seat bases, rebuilt the carb, new hoses filters cables... basically restored the damn thing..... 8)
He wanted to install some stereo crap so he took the boat home the two and a half years ago and I never saw the boat again, that is until Monday of this week... :-\
He calls me out of the blue and asked if I could help him get it running for this weekend.....He had not touched it since I had it in my driveway..... :screwy:
So I go over there and he is installing a stereo (some peoples priorities are focked all to hell.... :screwy: :screwy:)..
I begin to check out all the controls and fuel and what not. I decide to get a battery and he says, " I have the battery right here"...had not been used since 2006. :sly: it had been a maintenance charger for almost three years.
still had water in it and had 12.9 volts...Hooked it up, squirted some fuel in the carb and hit the key....I was blown away, the engine started virtually immediately and after the original prime ran out, I squirted it again and it started and idled.... Gave it a few revs and it ran awesome....
Had I not seen it myself, I would have called BS.
The only thing that did not work was the trim gauge, but after a few whacks with the palm of my hand, even that came to life....
BTW, the stereo still does not work, I was there tonight... :D
Also, this was a Berkeley E with a Packajet 460 that we changed the crank timing gear to a Cobra Jet OEM piece and a Pertronix and it will run 4900 RPM all day long with an A impeller.... ;)

I have an old Pete that sat for about six years.
Checked the oil and water, put in 4 new 6v batteries, 10 gal of diesel, and it held 30 pounds of oil pressure on the comp. release and fired her up. (no ether)
Beat on the tires, more fuel, and drove her 275 miles. She didn't start runnin good for 100 miles. pushed her pretty hard (1050-1100 on the pyro) in 5th over up that little grade on I-40 between AZ93 and Petro, Exit 66? She sat there for about 15 mins, (running) and the red warning flag (low air press) came down! Rev her up to get air press. and drove her home :) Hasn't been restored, just an old workhorse, Class of 1959

Amazing story! One thing got me though, why change the crank timing gear? Reason I ask is I happen to have a low hour Packajet I was ready to drop into the Yellow Sub. Timing set looked fine. Double roller even.

Pretty elementary actually.....The Cobra Jets are guaranteed to have earlier cam timing than a SMOG 460, it is the easiest way to advance the cam timing without spending three hours with a dial indicator and a complete timing set....Cheap too (like $16) :thumbup: :thumbup:
It is a pretty well known fact that the factory built 460's have somewhat retarded cam timing...I will say it did pick up some throttle response and about 300 RPM.
The reason I changed it was because I had to reseal the oil pan gasket and front seal, so I was right there and it cost me about 20 minutes.... ;)

OK, THAT makes sense......sounded like you only changed the crank gear out which sounded odd to me. ;)

This boat may be up for sale soon, it seems they went boating yesterday at the local pond and unfortunately found a submerged rock....
I'm never going to get my Trash done... :banghead:
Any way, as soon as I know, you'll know, haven't seen the carnage yet. :sly:
