Newbie needing some guidance

Hey everybody, my name is Eric and I just bought a 77 Taylor jet boat.  It doesnt have a motor in it but the guy I bought it from said thats all I need for it.  I figured it would be an easy project but the more research I do the more I realize how ignorant I am.  I was going to put a 350 in it but I cant find any headers for a small block and I think a big block is the way to go anyway, especially since I already have bb headers.  So I found a 454 that came out of an 85 1 ton and am thinking of buying it.  I just want to get the boat running for this summer so Im not wanting to get crazy with the motor.  I need some guidance from you pros about what I should do and buy to get this boat going asap.  Do I need  a different cam and what kind should I use.  I know I need a water divider, etc.  I just need info on just about everything.  Thanks so much for your time. :'(

Well first off i dont think i ever said welcome to SoCal ;)

Now i am no pro by any means, but i would not change anything on that engine that you dont need to... I am also installing a used BBC 454 "maypop" in my boat for the rest of the summer , and then im building my Boat motor >:D Do whatever you can to get it in the water the cheapest way, you have the boat, hard parts over now you have time to do whatever you want to it in the off season....... Does that make sense ???

X2, 2sav,  get it together with a running "Grenade" and have a little fun, just be prepared to be real gentle with it and don't get frustrated, the parts you need will be very apparent and that will allow you to prioritize and go boating in the process, just call it a "Rat Rod" for a while ;D

That would be like a $4500 drive by (Oklahoma) at todays fuel prices :banghead:

welcome to the site, if the motor is a good deal, buy it, do a rattle can rebuild and run it for the season. picking up parts as you go, it makes is easier on the wallet this way as well :)

Don't get in a hurry to find a specific part if you don't need it to get running.  That way you can watch the online classifieds, craigslist and Ebay to get better deals than having to buy new.  If you know you want to put a tunnel ram and dual carbs on it, don't run down to your local hot rod shop and drop $1500-$2000 when you can find them for $500-$1000 by waiting a little bit.  That way you can say "I saved $800 on parts, I won't complain about fuel being $5.00 a gal".  Ya know what I mean?

Ebax Welcome to the socal boards and Jetboats ,not sure I caught what was motor in the boat prior but the BBC from the truck should be fine for a "starter" powerplant , if your starting from "scratch" the parts you need to "Marinize" the truck mill are around $1k to $1500 if you gather a combo of new and used pieces to make it work,(we do and "assist" these all the time) . You will need: a drive line ,PTO, exausts (manifolds or headers) motor mount system (4 pt ,3pt or rail kit) an oil pan (debth cannot exceed 7 3/4 in at the rear pan rail (sometimes 8") ,water inlet plates and water outlet divider,as well as some other misc "this and that" . These things along with a running BBC and some elbow grease will put you in the H2O. You will get lots of coaching and help from the folks here and We (JBP) are also happy to help you anyway we can.
