Title: Water Line Plumbing Help
Post by: 74 Southwind on May 24, 2016, 01:26:44 PM
So we picked up a '74 Southwind with a 305 TPI and berkeley 12JC.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff286%2Fyltaco05%2FIMG_8366.jpg&hash=861aa398775fa76f106df0617548f57fbce8f13f) (http://s49.photobucket.com/user/yltaco05/media/IMG_8366.jpg.html)

sorry not the best photo to illustrate but the only one I have currently

Water lines are as follows:

Pump outlet to gate valve
valve to 5/8" hose
hose to tee to 2 runs of 5/8 hose that go to the logs
logs out to 5/8 hose to water inlets on motor
engine water outlet to single 5/8 hose to tailpipe

Now I have 2 issues and a few questions

Issue 1, the alternator had some excess movement when we ran the boat, even got the belt to smoke a coulee times.  Picked up a new bracket that is more sturdy, but is in the way of the 45 degree elbow coming out of the log.  I thought about going straight off the log instead of the 45 elbow, but even then the hose would be rubbing the bracket.  So i thought about stepping down to 1/2" hose instead of 5/8" (on both sides of course).  Would that be an issue? 5/8 to the logs, 1/2 from logs to motor, single 5/8 out to dump.

Issue 2, there is currently no thermostat (or housing).  This means the motor runs super cold all the time, Never went above 105... And being that its fuel injected, it won't run optimally at that temp.  I found the hardin marine bypass thermostat but because of the TPI set up on my motor, its too tall and won't fit under the throttle body.  Is there another setup that I could use to help get temps to optimal range and pressures down?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

That EFI is going to kick your ass. Get an open loop kit.

You can throttle the water down at the gate so it will at least idle at about 150°F, don't go any warmer.

Yes, you can totally go to 1/2" hose,  no problem.

That motor is never going to be a screamer. 220 hp at the absolute most.

Thank you GT!

I know the current motor won't be a screamer (maxed at 50 mph with 5 people its first time out).  Just gotta save funds for the new motor.  Just debating on going 383 and keeping TPI, or go carb'd big block..

For now I will change the hose to 1/2" to clear the Alt bracket, adjust the gate valve to idle at 150 degrees and research getting an open loop kit.
