Weights and Measures
« on: April 08, 2008, 01:57:59 PM »
I'm wondering if anyone in SCJB land has weighed the following separately...

1. Engine (make, model, induction exhaust... different types ok)
2. Pump (w/ or w/o snoots, extentions, intakes, nozzels, more types the better)
3. Hull (make & model plus a dimension from the transom to where it balances)
4. Tanks (empty w/ capacity in gal.)
5. Driver suited up (vs. in your b-day suit)

I would like to set up a little CG calculator and want to get an idea of how they set up compared to where we think they should be set up.  This should help everyone in ordering drive lines, fin placement, best location for tanks, driver's seat etc.  My hope is I'll develop it as free ware (probably a modified excel spread sheet) on the site if our fearless leader thinks it's ok.

That's cool - we can set it up so there is no true answer to any specific question. Just a "what if" tool for guys that 1) don't know what they have and 2) want to aim for a specific CG during set up. I would not nor could I make any recommendations.

I have my electronic scales for weighing my race cars that we could weigh a complete boat and trailer, then weigh the trailer without the boat to figure the difference.

Only problem is you have to raise the trailer with a jack to place the wheels on the weigh pads.

I really wonder how well this would work out.  There are so many different configurations for the same sort of boat/trailer configuration.  Then you would have to take into account how each trailer was made and how the hulls were laid up in the molds.   ???

Differences in weights is the point of the calculator.  As we get more data on different hulls I hope we can have a list of different boats as the database gets bigger.  If you have an idea of where to put a fin for instance you could check it with the calculator.  The info for the hulls needs to include the moment as well as the weight. so we need to know the distance from the balance point to the transom as a minimum. It would be nice to find the height above the keel too but I haven't figured out an easy way to get that yet and I couldn't expect everyone to be able to supply that info anyway. a few assumptions would have to be made. PS thanks for the pump weight Marcsrollin... I take it that's as shown in the pix.

What trial version are you speaking of. Excel? if you have any of the major spreadsheet softwares you should be able to convert it through the other version.  If not an old version of Excel you could pick up cheep.

Only if your version works in that crappy Vista.  Read an article about how you can set up a PC with a dual boot so you can boot up with Windows XP or Vista. Pretty sweet.

I have to agree with you!  No one wants to change.  I just bought a new PC and it came with Vista and the more I play with it and get use to how it works, I like it.  I hated XP when it came out and once I made the change and got use to it, it was fine.  Hell, I'm an "X" Network Engineer and use to have to stay 6 months ahead of what everyone else was just getting.  The latest and greatest PC that just hit Best Buy is 6 to 12 months old technology.  So can never be up to date.  I do know that I've got to buy a new paint/graphics program.
