Do you use to hang your engine on the stand with ??? Gonna go get some bolts today and looking for a heads up on what everyone uses.

I've always used Grade 5, mostly because that was what I had available and they are plenty strong backed up with a very thick washer. Never had a problem.

Honestly Johns right ,whatever bolts we can find in the Bin possibly More important is the stand itself ,alot of stands arent rated for a fullgrown BBC Ive got close to a dozen stands some are only good to 750 :o

Mine's rated for 2000 lbs ;D

Oh man, bring up a bad memory why don't you.
12 years ago as I was rolling my fresh motor to drop into the coupe that I had just finished painting, the cheap azz stand tipped......I tried to catch it for a second and then just let it go....while I walked out of the garage cuz I didnt want to see what happened. About an hour later I walked in. Manifold broke, dist broke, valve cover busted, timing cover and gear busted......
It's not the bolts but the stand. Mine is a way bad mofo, made in the USA rig now. Sounds like you've got a good one Sav.

You know, since I've done that and mentioned it to folks you cant believe how many have said they've had it happen to them.
I can't even imagine having that happen to a customers motor....ouch :o :o :o

Question: How come no one builds a motor stand with four or five wheels like every office chair on the planet?
If it can keep fat ass secretaries from hitting the floor cuz they weren't paying attention it seems like it would be a better way to go for motors too. I bet every guy that ever dropped a motor would immediately buy one. Damn did I say that out loud? I want a commission bitches!

Might be nice to be able to sit down to work on the motor too. My engine stand, even with the BBF on it could be cut down some and it would still spin the motor and you could work from a stool.

Really bad back and it would be a little easier on this old man to be able to work over the top of the motor. Not lazy just hate taking all the breaks to let the back rest. :-\

I hear ya... I'm the same way :-\ one hour of hard can turn into a 2 hour stretching session just to get moving again. ::)
I've over built my shop engine lift and added adjustable legs to add ballance when needed. I once started lifting the front end of my 76 Ford
F150 4x4 off the ground when I was trying to remove 390 motor and tranny... forgot to remove motor mount bolts first ::) lol.

For the price difference between grade 5 to grade 8... for lifting! I'd get the grade 8 bolt and washer! ;) Overkill is still cheaper than broken parts!
Never know when you'll find that defective grade 5 bolt made in china in your collection :o
...and don't forget to use grade 80 or better chain too! Ooooh, and some alloy grab hooks while your at it. :D

I had a factory lift hook pull out of the cylinder head on a Toyota 4 cylinder going into my 4x. Fell about 4 feet and broke and oil pan size hole in my asphalt driveway.

How long ago was that toyota 4 cyl incident? I was at Teague Custom Marine, they had one of their monster 540's with 1471 blower sitting on a stand. One of the employees left the pin on his tool box and the sucker turned upside down when they went to move it. JUST missed another mechanic and smashed the Carbs/top of blower. This all happened right before I walked into the shop. Got there just in time to see everyone run over to it...

How long ago was that toyota 4 cyl incident?
1988. I was getting ready to install the engine into my 83 4x4, rolling the cherry picker toward the truck and caught a crack in the asphalt, bounced the engine and pulled the bolts out of the head for the factory lift hook. >:(
I guess I'm lucky it was not over the core support at the time ;D

My buddy went to go pull a big ass Detroit Diesel out of a semi with his cherry picker... The arm just bent as he forced the ram to try to lift it. Then we used the picker to pull my BBC out of my old boat. good times, good times.
