Title: What have i got into.
Post by: SoCalPSD on August 11, 2011, 11:36:47 PM
So i got on this kick looking for a jet boat. Wife tells me im never gonna find a deal and i should just let it go. So i picked up a 19 footer jet from my brothers girlfriends dad for a woppin $200. Funny thing is he doesnt remember who made it and he thinks he lost the paper work for the boat. :banghead: But either way its not in too bad of shape and it only took me 2 hours to get the 454 fired up. Im just curious s to what the hell to expect.

 1. expect to spend A LOT of money before its done.

 2. expect to spend all your free time working on it.

 3. expect it to let you down numerous times before it makes a successful day trip to the lake.

 4. expect that $ 200 that you spent for it to one of the cheapest things you buy for it.

 5. expect everything you touch to break, crumble, fall apart, crack, or in some way become useless as soon as you touch it.

Welcome to the FUN of jet boat ownership  :o

Welcome to the site!

1. Expect to find some serious spiders in that boat.

2. Expect to find answers to just about every jet boat question here.

3. Like proppy said, expect to spend some money.

Welcome to SCJB  ;D

I'm not going to get into the amount of work you've just taken on.  :screwy:

You should be able to find the manufacturer in this list.

http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic1.aspx (http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic1.aspx)

The HIN number should be at the right rear of the hull.

welcome bro,
feel free to ask any question on this board, you will get the right answer.

But expect to spend, start off with taking it to a lake and make sure it floats, or fill it with water and make sure it doesnt leak.

then pull the credit card out and start spending!

Welcome,

chris

now that you have it running, take it all apart and start from a bare hull

Well thanks for the welcome guys. I spent about 6 hours yesterday after work goin through things and found a ziplock bag full of reciepts. Seems the jet was gone through in 03 and all of the cables were replaced. The engine was rebuilt in 02. Kinda figured the engine was in good shape after i checked everything under the valve covers, did compression test and leak down test. Hell its compression numbers are closer than my big block in my chevelle and that engine was just rebuilt.......again.  So it looks like the important stuff was taken care of. As you can tell from the amazingly great cell phone pictures the interior is pretty much well served its purpose and is done. Spent most of last night pulling everything out and that's when i stumbled upon the bag. Got everything out and The stringers seem to be in good shape as far as i can tell. My old man emphasized greatly on those due to him selling his favourite boat because of bad stringers when i was younger. And that's about as far as i got last night. Hopefully ill get the sub floor and front seats back in tonight and see if i can pull some strings with my friends at prefix and hopefully get to see if it floats.

Could you pull the runnin '54 out and stick it in the boat nexto yours? Looks like a more common jet boat hull.

 And the spending begins.   ::)

Call Tom / Josh at JetBoatPerformance (805-466-4719).   Good people with good prices.  And keep the number handy, you will need it again.  ;)

Yeah, really, and if she DOES find this place, don't post pictures of boat/engine parts in the kitchen........that would probably go REALLY bad......Proppy and I are single and can get away with that sorta juvenile behaviour......... 8)

Three cable deal at JBP is smokin. BTW, Tom probably will anyway, but make sure you get the new helm and all and order a couple extra 43C heim joints and bolts.....no matter where you get your cables from......those ALWAYS come in handy, expecially at the lake or river when they fall out even if you use (And you need to) Loctite Red on them.....

Welcome! And I wouldn't necessarily rip it all apart, although we all do eventually, but I would pay close attention to the fuel tanks/lines. That seems to be something popping up more and more. If you smell gas.......could be your a$$........

When you route the new cables, keep a keen eye for potential problems. These boats are usually older than most of the gang here, not as old as me, but some of the hardware in there can be in the same bad condition as me (fuel filler necks, wiring harnesses, fuel lines, etc)........ ;)

Lookin at those PICs, the "bottom of the boat" PIC looks a lot like mine.

I figure it's too much time on the beach, not enough time on the water!

And when on the trailer, it kind of bothers me that so much daylight comes through the bottom when peering into the ski locker, if you know what I mean.... :o

Who fixes that kind of trouble in the San Fernando Valley?
