I posted earlier about the taylor project boat I'd found, I haven't bought it yet. You guys said it had a set back pump. How is that done and why is it a good mod? What's modified to do that? I can get the boat and trailer for around $1000 is that a bad deal for a project? The trailer looks pretty nice. The engine is blown up, doesn't have a blower. Has the mounts and thru hull exhaust and manifolds.

The pump intake and suction housing, bowl etc are all moved back in the hull, hence "set back" It's a good mod as it makes your boat think that it's longer, you'll have less hull in the water, you'll go faster as the boat will ride drier than normal, I see a rideplate in the pic too, another good mod. Nice score for $1000

I didn't read your other thread, but from the pic below from that thread, you DO NOT have "set back" pump. That term is used for "convential" style pumps that have had their intakes set further back in the hull than was normal. What you have is an "insert" style pump, specifically a Berkeley JE. These pumps are fitted into an "intake" that is actually a molded portion of the hull. It cannot be moved forward or back. Some call it "set back" due to the handhole cover being behind the hull, but that is really an incorrect term for these pumps. The insert style are more limited in performance applications and will reach that limit long before a conventional style pump.

Silver.. heres some pics of an intentional jet "set back" in process now , we do several a season and have pictorals of current and prior on our website , Your "E" insert jet is a good performer , was very popular in several makes and applications and uses n early all the same parts and pieces as the standard Berk type set ups ! Tom

Actually, quite right, and I was wrong on my post in your other thread as well. JE pumps are all kinda "setback" with the intake being part of the suction housing. (Other Berks have the intake separate, the JE and JF are unique this way). Advantage's include the low mount cable system, looks much cleaner and has better "feel" being inline with the output of the jet, if the Place Diverter is set close to neutral.
You'll hear good and bad, but my Moo has the same pump and runs out just fine, so I kinda ignore the bad, ;D. Yeah, it cavitates when I flat foot it from a standing start, and no loader, so it'll suck air from time to time on some chop, but still runs like hell when I get into it!

X2, twas trying to point out it is a GREAT pump, as far as I'm concerned, Just didn't do so well at it, lol!
