Title: Winter project just got bigger (now with pics)
Post by: Sangersquirt on November 23, 2010, 02:14:05 PM: went to storage to get the boat. Got there and found that my cover and all my straps grew legs and found a new home. :mad: At least they left my engine cover. Point being it sat un covered for who knows how long ( havent been there in 5 weeks). Its been raining pretty good up here so my interior that I was gonna push through 1 more season is now sitting in a sloppy pile next to the boat. My carpentry skills are very good (16 years), my upolstery skils... eh, not so much. Probably gonna rebuild the front buckets the way they were. I don't like the layout in the rear so much though. Two small benches facing each other. Very inconvienent for anyone over 4' tall. Any suggestions on an allteranate arangement?? gonna post pics tonight if I have time. Thanks for readin.

Gotta fix the filler neck, rewire entire boat and redo interior.

Post by: Sangersquirt on December 12, 2010, 04:54:06 PM: I have a question for any one who has built thier own seats. I'm very close to being done with the rough construction of my rear bench. What I don't know is, how much room should i leave between the gunnel and the frame. I'm sure the upolsterer will need some room to wrap in there but I'm not sure. I would go ask an upolstery shop but I haven't found one yet.

It is built tight to the gunnels right now.

Post by: HDriderTH on December 12, 2010, 05:49:02 PM: I'm doing the wood for my sanger right now. There is only enough room for a few layers of vynel between the wood and the gunwhales, 1/8" or so.

Now on to the buckets. First bucket is in the clamps drying right now, fingers crossed on that.

88 kerfs 3/8" oc. I used 3/8 5ply, the kerf goes half way through the fourth ply, found this to be the best for strenght and smoothness through the arc.

I made some extra base cutous and screwed them together. This gives something to to keep the arc nice and symetrical. It is temporarily screwed to the upper part of the form.

Soaked it in H2o for a while. Didn't take very long, as only the outter 1.5 plys had to soak. Bout half an hour. Clamped it for about two hours to let the shape set a little.
Glued, screwed and clamped like a mofo. It was a bit of a wrestling match by myself, but for once I took my time and got it pretty dam perfect.

Any suggestions? I've read some guys use FG resin, but that seams like a big headache for the upolstery guy (trying to nail/staple through it).

haha how'd it work where the seat cushions and how tight it is? it looks like when you'd put some foam backed vinyl that it would rub...
