I'm planning to re-wire my boat next winter, where should I go to get the wire? I know Hardin still makes harnesses, but I want to build a custom harness.

Mcmaster will have everything you need. You can get pre-tinned as well. Good stuff, good prices, fast shipping.

I actually made my own wire harness for my engine and I'm in the process of re-wiring the rest of the boat. I found it to be cheaper and if you h e the patients I think it comes out better.

ebay. 10 colors 18 gauge 50 feet of each for like $37. then i bought locally some "braided loom" to make it all pretty. this stuff looks 5000x better than that shitty plastic wire loom junk.

Mcmaster industrial supply has everything you will ever need to build a harness. They have all different choices of wire and even have thicker jackets then the standard automotive wire, including wiring tools as well. They have great explanations of what each type of wire and such. They also have great terminal ends, heat shrink, etc. They also have weather pack fittings as well. I have completely wired 3 boats as well as made a lot of harnesses for my flat bed dump project with tons and tons of wiring for strobe lights, plow control etc all with McMaster products. I cannot remember the last time I went to west marine or napa for wire products which are a rip off. I suggest you take a look at the site and search around there a little for wiring products. There are a lot of choices. I get the pre-tinned wire that has the thicker jackets which I think exceeds marine grade.

I drew up a wire diagram for my own boat. The terminal board is wired up standard just like all marine terminal boards. Besides only I need to know what wires go where.
