Acts like a clutch, it allows you to run the motor outside of the water without spinning your pump.

Correct me if I am wrong but it also is for safty  acts a break away in the event the motor dies or locks up ?

Also yes, in case your motor decides to not run for whatever situation. It allows the impeller to spin freely. Meaning the pump is still spinning pushing the water through as you begin to decrease speed because your powerless. Therefore you don’t nose dive as hard.

It’s a ratchet device. If you loose power for whatever reason it ratchets. If you want full disengagement, grab the handles and pull back. To reengage grab the handles and move it forward.
