Just throwing these out there. What do you think?
Is there a market for custom swimsteps?
Got these cut out today, but haven't glued the inserts in yet.
Don't be shy, give me your opinions.

nice can you make a full length one and put the centurion trojan head on it? are these teak? if so how much?

We could do full width swimsteps and the trojan profile.
Probably cost somewhere around 400.00 + or -
These would be made out of 1" thick Bamboo
The prototypes are 3/4 because thats what I had in stock.
The plain step would cost around 90.00 ea
The custom steps are around 135.00 ea.

I have a full length one that is in need of some industrial strength love, and I just keep putting it off. Those are making me think it ain't worth the effort. How well do you figure the bamboo/sealant? will hold up to sun and water? They look great - very nice work.

Glad to see our phone conversation didn't go to waste, those look great, is there any sort of stain or sealer on them? Anyway to darken them a bit?

Skip, those are natural, no oil or stain on them. Still need to play with different adhesives to set the inserts. Then do another soak test. Will probably make up a tray to soak the steps in oil, maybe add a little heat to it. Wanted to get some feed back before I go and buy a couple more sheets of material @ 300.00 plus per sheet.
My sister is working on the programing of the machine for the cutting. She takes my ideas and turns them into what you see there. She is used to cutting stone and making custom medallions and back splashes. Cutting wood is a different animal.
We can also put metal inserts in, like some stainless would be cool.

I really like those! They would look sweet with a polished stainless boat in it. My beaver is way taller on the sides than most of the boats on here and is a pain to get in and out of. I am interested, just to to figure out what would look better sizing wise.

We treated them with tung oil, soaked them under water for 3 days, with no signs of any problems.
The edges should not split, but any wood product it has a chance of splintering. When bamboo panels are made they are pressed under extreme pressure and actually end up 17% harder than maple. The problem with most wood swimsteps is the fact that they dont get reoiled as much as they should. Instead of oiling them when they still look good, we dont even notice them until they are already dried out.

I'll be ordering some material in a couple of weeks. Then i'll get your old swimstep and replicate it or do something a little different.

Have you had them on your boat since 2010? Is that a recent pic? Would you rethink the bamboo if you were to do it over?
I really like them. Been thinking about doing some wood work on mine. Wish you were still doing them.

That was a pic from 2010 or 11. There still on the boat and looking pretty good. I oil the crap out of them thou. Have a couple sets left for personal use, they'll last me a lifetime.
And yes, I would do bamboo for me. It's not teak and requires more maintenance
