Title: Sand Pics thread
Post by: pw_Tony on January 07, 2008, 09:48:33 AM
Thought I'd start a thread just for the sand toys. I don't have many right now, but I'll post what I got.

Title: Glamis
Post by: pw_Tony on February 05, 2008, 11:06:55 AM
Well had a spur of the moment trip to Glamis.

Went riding saturday morning around town with DevilMan. Decided it was way too small and he talked me into going to Glamis at 6:00PM on saturday lol. We rode at night, it was his first time in the dunes in 7 years, and first time with the Raptor.

I felt bad and let him run my extremes, so I ran the knobbies. Should have seen how many 450's I beat with knobbie tires LMAO. I even beat a couple piped and paddled 700's.

Here's some pics.

I wanted to get some action shots but my $4.00 AA battiers would only last one picture from the Glamis store lol. But I was able to get a short Vid of Devil Man racing a cool head, piped, and ported Quadzilla. He won twice and lost twice.

Long, overtold, story written short, if I can't do both - I'd rather be on the water than in the sand. But I'm itching to race my quad against ? anything.

It's funny,

I talk on boat and quad forums. They both have the same attitude, "But it's just a boat, I rather build my bike" and "It's just a toy quad, I rather haul ass in my boat". I enjoy both, and hauling ass in both  O0

But I don't think I could choose

What? ???

I've never seen it, but I've heard...

Remember those old school Manx dune buggies?

Now-a-days they build rat rods instead of hot rods, the rat rods have flat black primer/paint and no frills, sometimes not even a floorboard.

Warlock took a Manx and painted it flat black and...

Where's the pic?

I havent been to Gorman in years. I pretty much grew up there camping with the family. We were there so much my grandfather had a stash of food and supplies buried there back by the river.  On one of the final trips we convinced him to let us dig it up and out came a map of its location!

Anybody who spent time there in the 80's and early 90's would defenitly remember my Grandfather!

Damn I love that place!

I picked up my engine block last weekend at Frazier Park and this weekend I'm picking up my engine's rotating assembly there also. Last weekend they had a decent amount of snow at the little "town" where I was, about 20 min's past Frazier Park on the same road. I didn't know there is camping or a track up there, not the track part matters because I prefer at least one wheel on the ground at all times. I don't think UNDONE follows the same preference.  :screwy:  :D

I haven't been riding/racing much since 2003. Fractured vertebrae in my neck broke 6 ribs and bruised 4 more.

Returned in September 2005 to unofficially take 2nd place in the Race Around the Lake team race at Castaic lake. We weren't registered but they allowed us to run anyways...

Christmas DAY 2005 I crashed once again, separated the AC joint in my right shoulder, dislocated the shoulder, broken right wrist, fractured knee cap, and concussion. Should've seen the helmet. Asterisk knee apparatus was destroyed... It wasn't worth it. After that no more bikes from Yamaha of Troy/Boost Mobile and bought a CR 250 (434 in the pictures) to putt around on with the ol' lady on her '07 CRF150R. Now all I have is the 150. It was good times, but I don't do much track riding anymore. Just go out and take pictures for all the big names. You name some of the big guys in motocross chances are they have a picture I took of them hanging on a wall somewhere in their house.

I may be able to help you for about $12k Omar. One of the old fellers at work has a car for sale. 16" of travel front and rear, big VW 300HP on dyno Natural aspiration. Built for Turbo, just bump down the compression and throw one on. She'll be reliable to 20lbs of boost. Not exactly a turn key buggy. Requires someone who is wiling to take care of it. For example, if you let it sit a week or more and go to start it, you will starve the engine of oil in the first 30 seconds. You have got to spin the dizzy gear first. This particular one is and isn't a toy. Beats the hell out of the big boy sand cars. Spanks on all of them in everything but a straight line, and even then it more than holds its own.

Yes sir. Without the Turbo. Had a lot of well known hands in the production of that engine. Vellios racing engines, Jim Grubbs Motorsports. The guys who owns it was big into the sand drags in the 70's was a mechanic for one of the fueler teams back in the day.

Even if it's a 2500cc Vdub based engine, that's 2hp per cubic inch..... out of a vw engine  :sly:

I believe it when I see the dyno charts   ::)

I don't have any charts to provide. Isn't mine. I can only go off what I've been told... I'll try to get some info out of him on Tuesday. Maybe even some pics and an add posting. The dude is in his 70's and is getting rid of it because his wife is dying of cancer and he needs the money to cover medical bills.

Alright, here's the scoop Omar. I was mistaken before. I'm gonna try to head to his house this weekend and take some pics. This isn't the kind of car you let the kids drive or anything like that. It weighs 750 lbs. It's a 2355VW 235HP and with a turbo is expected to make mid 300's. Has 8'' travel all around with the sway-a-way? style torsion front end. He said with some remounting/welding you could put it up around 12" travel relatively easily. $14k with the enclosed trailer. The trailer alone ran around $10 when he bought it. This thing is pretty mean, powerband starts around 1800 and starts dying off around 5500.

haha. PW it belongs to an old guy named Steve. He used to be a part of a sand drag team in the 70's he also did the catalina ski race for a few years in a 16' Rogers at 90 MPH. I'll try to get a hold of pictures. They were using 150' ropes and the skier was somewhere in the middle of the roost.
