Title: VW Transaxle FML
Post by: AQUAHOLIC on January 15, 2013, 01:51:55 PM
So just talked to the trans shop and its goign to be a little over 2k$ to put my VW swingaxle back together.

from the shop
"Transaxle is apart, cleaned and Magnaflux inspected. We found a broken 4.37 ring and pinion, both axles fail mag with bad cracks on spade ends, all 4 spider gears and both the diff side gears also are cracked.

so i pretty much broke everything but the housing and the axel tubes. LOL. i knew i drove this thing hard but damn. Anyway it has added to my already very expensive month.

the superduty diesel went to the shop
Put a new HVAC unit at the river place
The river place garage is an on going project

im sure there are more costs but these are the big ones that came to mind

wright gearbox will sell you a built 091 for that price!

that seems like a lot for a swing axle trans!

What are they going to give you in your new gear box? A 4.12 ring gear is a little stronger you would just need to replace third and 4th gear ti get the gearing down. My class 9 gear box was about that price and those aee "stock" swing axles. 091 are the way to go except you will spend a lot more money going that route since your not set up for it.

ya bigger ring and pin whit a complete aftermarket gear set to bring the ratio back down. I thought about going 091 but by the time that is said and done i will have another 10k wrapped up in this thing.

The buggy if fun as hell the way it is. I just need a trans that will hold my HP.

I talked to wright gear box. i can swap one of their pro street trans in for around 700$ but that is the same trans that i just blew up. I need to build one that can handle the 200hp im throwing at it.

This buggy was a full custom build and i will most likley never sell it. It will be my sons first dune buggy. Cause i will probably have a new one in the next few years.

I like to run 4.87 ring gears in the sand but they are a big gear and pricey. 3.88 are the strongest ring gear set. A 4.12 or 4.37 would be good. Put hardend shift forks/keys, weld up 3rd and 4th gear. Run sway away axles that are polished and shotpeened, run a good diff with 4 spider gears and you should be fine. I run erco second gears for the second gear starts, they are about 800 alone, but there really isnt another choice other than stock. Run a super bettle first gear because they are bigger and have a shorter gear ratio than a typical type 1 pre 1973. If you need any help tony you have my number feel free to call or text at anytime

sounds like you know what you are talking about!

I have the trans with jeff over at transaxle engineering in chatsworth. He is going to come up with a build sheet for me. I told him what type of car i am running and what motor, size tires, driving style. all that good stuff. I will let you know what we come up with.

well jsut got the bill.  Just shy of 2600$. FOR A SWING AXLE. lol anyway it is fully built with Chrome molley everything and it is race prepped. should handle anything i can throw at it.

does anyone know of a shop that can set up and dyno tune a carburated turbo 1915? and also a good suspension shop that knows about class 9 cars? I am running stock KYBs right now and i think the ride could be greatly improved by going with a better shock.

funny you should ask. I used to race class 9 cars. I can tune the motor for you its not hard. Are you running single or dual carbs? Depending on what kind of money you want to spend your shocks can change from fox to King. I would run king unless your in a hurry. I can help you out. I know the guys a king pretty damn well.

you just became my best friend.

My two motors i have to chose from are both well built with good heads and all the right stuff. One is a NA 2276 with dual webbers, the other is a turbo 1915 with holley 400. I am not sure what motor makes more power or is better suited for my car. I know the 2276 is fun and runs pretty strong in the higer RPM range. I have never ran the 1915 yet. I am guessing they are both near 200hp. What would u use.

Here are my two motors and you can see my rear shock set up in the background of the pic.

I am not in a hurry at all. I am hoping to put the trans back in and the car mostly back together next week. I will probably stick teh 2276 back in there since it is ready to go. but i want to take the turbo down to have some one dyno tune it and get it running to full potential on pump gas.

as for my shocks i would like to make the most out of my set up. I know i could go with a longer travel car but to tell you the truth i have more fun in my little swing car than i do in grandpas twin turbo LS beast with 30 inches of travel.

personally i like NA cars. I can tune the hell out of webers since thats what i mainly use and grew up on. How big are the webers? The motor choice would depend on what the guy did to your tranny. Turbos like load, thats how they build boost. If your tranny is to tight the turbo motor might not feel any different than the NA motor. I like running short gears in the sand, like cruising 3rd gear and running in 3rd and 4th since they are the strongest gears in the box.

Carbs are easy to tune once you get them down. The biggest thing with dual carbs on a VW is the linkage if your linkage is sloppy and not equal then your carbs will never be right. They will pop and the motor will run very rough. I always start the car with the linkage not hooked up. Set everything the same. The air bleeds i normally run about (2) turns out to start and the idle screw are turned in enough to move the butterfly are about 1/8"-3/16". That might not let the car idle but its a good start. The linkage arms should not put any load on the carb butterfly levers, they should smoothy fall in the holes. once that is good then its fine tunning from there. More often than not the problems are from linkage not being correct. Webers get dirty also, they seem to get alot of crap in the jet valleys. Dellortos are the worst unless they are fixed to move the idle jets.

As far as the rear end. Im not sure what you want it to do. If you want to mob thru bigger shit with out slowing down then you need more shock and a coil over IMO. if you want to drive it like a 9 car then i would change the shocks to a min of 2.5" shocks with reserviors. The reservoirs will help keep the shocks cool which keeps the viscosity consistant longer, heat will kill a shock and give it a very squishy feel. The torsion bars in your car are another big thing. VW made a lot of different length bars for the rear. i like 28mm long bars out of a bus. They allow the car to ride smoother longer. The torsion bars are fixed at one end and as the car cycles thru the travel the bars twist more and get tighter, like a coil over. The longer the bar the more adjustment. You can set ride height with out the super tight feel that short bars will give you. Im not sure the size tire you use but that could be a problem if they are to big. I think you can get away with 31" i cant remeber if you can use 33" or not. Alot of 9 cars do not use stock torsion housings so they make the car wider to take up the length of the torsion bars.

hopefully this helps. If you need more info you know where to ask.

i pay pretty close attention to my linkage and carbs. i think i have them dialed in pretty well.

The trans was gear way lower than it was.  I dont have the exact numbers right now but should have them soon when the trans gets back to me. I had transaxle engineering build the trans to the tune of 2600$ got chrome molley everything, big ring and pinon, whole new gear set, shot peened something or other, something called a hockey stick, upgraded shift fork. and some other fancy shit.

I want to drive it like a class 9, i drive this car hard and it is fun as hell. I just think there is some room for improvment in my shock set up sincei am just running a stock kyb gas shock.

I thank you for your help. Maybe i can sweet talk you into a meetup and you can look over my set up and help me dial this pig in.

update---
Mybuggy is running like a boss. i put the 2276 back in but i took one of the carbs off. The car runs like its fuel injected now with the single carb rather than the dual carb set up.

The new trans is awesome. Feels like the car has 100 more hp. i use 3rd and 4th all the time. its nice. I cant wait to get it out to the sand and see how it does.

I also changed out all the shocks from KYBs to Fox that are valved for my set up. Car is awesome. I also cut out the engine cage and did a newer style rear end.

im pretty satisfied with the buggy.

As for the turbo motor. I should be getting a shipment of parts that i need to install the turbo motor in my wifes manx. I am also collecting parts to finish the manx so we can bring it with us for thanks giving in glamis

Ok well it's already been said but $2600 is way high. That's like two trans being built. I run a 2276 turbocharged with a type two trans built close ratio and all. Only paid on the high end of $1,200. Try this guy my friend. I have had no problems with my bus trans.

When you say type 2 trans are you talking a bus box or a swing axle that came in an earlier bus. They are way different than a 022 or a 091 box

not sure how you can do it so cheap. I searched all around. just my 2nd gear alone was 800$. add the chrome molly axels new ring and pinion and all the other upgrades and i actaully got a pretty good deal on this trans.

There are guys with LS drag cars running my same swing axel. It feels solid as hell.  Granted i could have probably changed to IRS with about the same money but then iwould be running stock stuff and it would only be a matter of time before i did this again.

i think the car is damn near bulletproof right now. IT is soooo fun to drive. I think the long travel and the size of the full size cars kind of takes some of the fun away from dicing the corners on the switch backs thru the desert. I have some friends with some pretty nice cars. And if we get into some tight spots with lots of turns i can leave some of the baddest machines in my dust. Now when we hit a whooped out wash they come flying by me like i was standing still. i guess you have to pick your battles.

Transaxle Engineering builds some bad ass stuff. from swing axels to Albins trnas. I trust them. Jeff is a good friend of my fab guy so i know i did not over pay i just got some good shit put in there.

I am just wondering if my car will do a wheel stand in the sand?

Well I can understand how you want something bulletproof but your last statement said it all for me. Slamming your gears and clutch will most def brake a tranny for sure trying to hang a wheel stand.I Learned a lot about my equipment over the years and nothing is bulletproof ever!!! I can have plenty of fun with my car and not do things like that. Wheel stands really don't prove much but show people you like to fix your transmission every other trip.

ya i agree. i dont make it a habbit of putting a shock load on 1st gear or reverse. but once im rolling i drive it like a race car!! and its a blast. The trans let go in the dunes on a hill climb. i had to down shift from 2nd to 1st. once i did i blew the ring gear.

I agree that you need to baby your stuff if you want it to last forever. but that is not exactly what i am looking for when i take the buggy out for some fun. It is more fun to drive a little mid travel car at its full potential than it is to puts around in some bad ass machine and being scared to break things cause everything cost 20k +..

We need to set up a SCJB Sand event. if its dumont or glamis we should try to get that together this winter. i would say at least half the guys on this site have an off road toy of some sort

Yea I see where your coming from. I two like to go up the hills and fast. I Have broken a couple engines doing such things. I mean anything can happen at anytime how hard or how hard your not. I say Dumont around Oct 19/20. That's when the group I'm with and I will be out there.

where do youlive at. I see your sig say high desert. Im in ridgecrest.

ya i have not been to dumont but all my glamis friends that have gone said its too small. so i just figure once i get the buggy and trailer loaded up a 3 hour drive to dumont or a 6 hour drive to glmais. once im loaded up its same same.

High Desert is where I live. Dumont is definitely smaller but in my opinion way more challenging to drive in. I have done the long drive down to Glamis and its a little flat for my taste. I like the high hills and  challenging razorbacks. That's me though. I run with a group who only usually goes to Dumont.

I have been to dumont a few times and didnt really care for it. But glamis on the other hand, 2 1/2hr drive and I'm there. I'm down to make a trip, although I'm not an old fart. I still ride a bike. Be nice to break my brother in with a large group of guys around, this coming season will be his first trip to the sand.

ya i had a yz250 all set up for sand but i got rid of it. now i just take my desert bike out there with a huge gear on the back tire. runs pretty good but i miss the light weight of the old 2 stroke. I would not mind finding another CR250 to pimp out as a sand bike
