98 Silverado Z71 4x4 growl noise

I am running out of ideas, I have a 98 Z71 4x4 and driving in 2 wheel drive it makes a growl noise from the front end after about 40mph, put in 4 high and it goes away and stays away when going back to 2 wheel dr. when in 2 wheel it does not drive like its in 4 wheel so I know it is not stiking in 4 wheel dr. Is this a common problem with these? it has 115k on it. Other then that it runs good, shifts good, etc.  Any ideas will help.

have to ask.....have you checked fluid levels ?

bearings can make growling noises.  sounds like it could be coming from transfer case. :-\

Yes. All fluids hood and replaced just recently. Axles and transfer case

You think the front wheel bearings were noisy it would go away when in 4x?

It's the vacuum pod and or cable it's mounted under your battery locate it and then follow the vacuum hoses from it to the engine and make sure there not broken. What its trying to do is go onto 4x4 by itself

And yes its a common problem. All the 4x4 truck use a simular system

well....in 2x the bearings are running on the coast side...in 4x they run on driven side.  driven side must be quieter than coast side, then when going back down to 2x...seems like bearings favor the driven side and run quieter.  these are just my ideas im throwing out.
i know gears can sound like that....when on/off throttle.

The noise doesn't change if on the throttle or not. If in 4x there would be pressure on then to quiet them. I will check that too.

It's not the bearings other wise the noise would change while under a load. It's the ingagement fork on the front axle shift trying to pull the synchro hub into the axle engagement teeth. There's a million you tube videos on this. I had a problem with the 4x4 on my s10 just like yours. Thank fully my Tahoe hasn't done it yet

I'm a tech at a Chevy dealer here in va and common problem is front 4wd actuator that runs of vacuum and not fully did engaging. Most common on 01-04 truck Tahoe denali Yukon and escalade

ive looked in that box and nothin stating a relay for head lights  even looked under dash
