Title: 12JB or drake
Post by: countryboyaustin on May 14, 2010, 12:10:04 PM
My 1974 Eliminator  DayCruiser has a Drake pump in it now. I have had no issues with it but I can not find ANYONE who knows anything about it. I GPS about 51-52 mph as it sits. Stock Hardin Marine 454. The drake has a Trim setup on it. My question is am I going to notice the difference if i do a swap with the 12jb or should i just stick with what I now have?

If its a 21, you might not see much more but as far as parts and upgrades available for the Berk, that'll be the way to go.
On the bigger boats with stock power they offten put pumps that were really good about getting the boat out of the hole.
The drake pump prebably does a good job of that .
I personally would buy everything I needed to do the swap and maybe even some wedges and a straight snoot and droop snoot and possibly machine the intakefor a shoe and ride plate while the boat still runs.
Run the pump for all its worth and when its time to go, it's time to go!
All the extra parts will aid you in getting optimal performance out of your set up.
When you have squeezed everything out of it you can, you can always sell off any extras you migh have layingaround.
Its not an odd boat so I'm sure someone with a really good running set up could get you started in the right direction right off the bat .

Before I forget, might wanna check on the size of the hole the drake intake is going to leave.
If it's bigger than the berk, you got glass issues also.
Hopefully thats not the issue but something to keep in mind.

I am afraid the hole itself is bigger. As of right now she hops square out of the water and gets going. She plains in seconds and as i said runs a tad past 50. I know she is a big boat. I have my 12jb so I guess I will just start buying parts for the eventual swap. Especially if I do not expect much difference. Ill just build a pump that will take more horses next time! 350 aint cutting it I guess!

I believe the Bayjet intake is the same size as the Drake and will fit the Berk pump.

Good point and worth some research.
Bay Jet intake is gonna be just as hard to come by though.
Unless it's the same size as a berk (coincidently)  :sly:

Simply because it runs , I wouldnt mess with it until your ready or the pump is worn.
Long term and adjustability are the real benefits to the berk in your case.
The pump is where I throw all my money first.
All the power in the world wont get you squat if it isnt being applied .

So far the drake does not even spin/ It hooks solid. When it starts spinning ill do something. right now it doe A ok. Granted at 350 or so it isnt getting hurt but  she stands up and dances still. I can smack ass hop out for the first 100 ft or so and KILL most of them. At about 35 -40 they kick my ass!

The Drake jet (made in very limited numbers, around 600 ttl ) is as Omar described a pretty decent jet especially for larger craft but IMO has very limited performance applications , The Drake intake is almost the exact width as Berk and Bay jet for that matter but the Drake intake is much longer by around 6 inches (Berks and Bays have differering bolt patterns too) The original Drake "install " generally lends itself readily to a Berk/AT/Dom type swap out  We have done Three of these over the past two seasons , both with Positive results and feedback . BTW Try as we may to "move" them  the three Old Drakes are still setting on pallets  ;)

So thinking on that what would a couple old drakes cost me so I have parts and dont have to swap anything even if something breaks?

The Bay jet intake is longer and the same size as a Drake opening. Different bolt pattern for sure. Ive had both side by side one time. Its cheaper to buy a new boat than to convert to berkley unless your in love with it. Id say leave it alone like Beerjet said.
