Title: 455 olds cuts out
Post by: 76Mantra455 on July 30, 2019, 02:13:14 PM
Hey when I’m running on my driver side tank it cuts out like its starving for fuel but on the passenger tank it dose not do it nearly as much. This is only under hard throttle. The motor has 68 hours on it new edelbrock cark and i just put new filters and fuel pump on it. It seems to be getting fuel could the timing need to be advance a little or ditch the edelbrock 750 and get a Holley marine carb. One thing I haven’t done has flush the tank or run it completely out of fuel and start fresh. And the fuel lines are old

On my dual tank set-up, it was the gas cap not letting in any air, and creating a vacuum. A small hole in the gas cap underside solved that problem. Only one side did that.

Back to back testing, the Holley carb worked better than the eddy carb.
Better acceleration, and fuel economy, as well as idle quality.

Electric or mechanical pump? Do you happen to have a fuel pressure gauge that a passenger could watch while you run it?
Do you have the float set so you have enough fuel in the bowl for wide open runs?  Maybe it’s coincidence that one side does it more.

I was thinking vapor lock to cause my 63 Lincoln used to do that when it was hot. Mechanical fuel pump no pressure gauge, and the floats i have know idea i pulled it out of the box and slapped it on. Soon as i get enough money up i am gonna upgrade the carb to a Holley.

If you say your fuel are old, a small crack could be sucking air. I see you change the fuel filter that’s good.  High Hp need 3/8” fuel line, not 5/16”.

Yeah I’m gonna take a look at the lines here in a bit. And I’m not running much horsepower its .40 over with a cam and C big valve heads don’t know if its stroked haven’t got that far in it. JBP said its a healthy engine though

I believe I figured it out. One of the plugs on the intake manifold was a little lose so it was likely sucking a little air and then the fuel filter going to the carb was leaking gas when i turned it over so a defective fuel filter and a possible leak on the intake manifold could do it. So i filled it up added my lead additive and tomorrow during the day before work I’m going to buena vista and go tubing and if the bogging is down maybe water ski...

Hopefully that is it. If not, at least it was 2 things fixed. Tubing and skiing before work, a heck of a way to start the day.

Well finally got the fuel line changed today after running it all last year. The line was corroded inside. I also found out that my tanks are just bolted in on the bottom. So if this does not work i will just pull the tank and flush it real good

Oh this is a good one for a update? the whole time it was a bad fuel selector valve ended up getting new tanks and did the same thing? I have another thread on here about that
