waer ski ?????
« on: July 10, 2011, 06:54:51 PM »
my wife wants to learn how to water ski so i need to get some ski's. i would like to know what kind to get? i have looked at some ski's and i see the really wide ones wich to me would be easy for her to get up on?  she is 50 years old so this has to be pretty easy for her to do or she will just say forget it... i really need this to be enjoyable (?) for her ;) if we could get a set that would work for both of us that would be a plus and im 240lbs.

i have seen o'brian connley and other brands but am not sure how long they should be and so forth. what say you???

thanks ralph

You don't really want a really wide ski, but rather a ski with a wide back and a wide concave on the bottom.

I have taught quite a few kids how to ski, but never really an adult...

Trick one.......Wait until you are moving pretty good before actually standing up, also, dual handles are easier to learn with over the single handle, you have more movement available while trying to keep the rope taught and your balance simultaneously....

Have fun...

we have a ski called the BIG EASY.  it was made by connelly.  really easy to get up on but not made for cutting... Really squirly in turns .  ski is really wide at the nose (almost wake board width)

Hey Ralph. There use to be a place in long beach called endo's. Not sure if they are still around but might be worth a trip over. Let me know when she wants to learn and I will be happy to lend a hand. Takes a lot of patients but worth it. There has never been a person that I have tried to teach that hasn't gotten up the first day :-). Just sayin....

Ralph, before you go out and buy a ski let me know when you want to go out...

Both Michelle and I have skis that should be good for both of you, provided her foot side is close to Michelle's.

Call or pm me.

Hey Ralph

Ideally you both want to get to one ski as soon as possible,, easier to control, easier on the back, etc.  You may both want to start on doubles, unless one or both of you is particularly coordinated or used to other "balance" sports.

It's going to help a bunch if you have a good driver when you are learning, good observer won't hurt either.  Depending on where and when you plan on trying, I would be up for helping.  I am 5 minutes from Puddingstone, got an outboard ski boat that's tough enough to get me up wrapped up.  (Don't know if you are aware of my ski racing background?)

I've got a few here I'll drag to BR also, Ralph. Neighbor was a pro skier and gave me a couple as well as a couple I got off Chromey. I think the Becca's will be there so maybe my Becca can learn to ski as well.

Wow! Your wife's 50 and she wants to learn how to ski! She has more guts than most of the guys I know.  I'm over 50, and my hope the first time out every year is that I can still get my old arse out of the water on a slalom ski.....

Good luck and be careful.  My observation is that more people get hurt skiing on 2 than on a slalom ski: Twice as many boards flying around in random directions when you fall.  I'd encourage a move to a "fat" slalom ski as soon as she gets up on 2.

BUT: Beginners can be easily discouraged when trying to slalom ski.  It's very technical, and requires a lot of strength and a good sense of "body" balance.  This is where those "fat" skis help overcome the initial drag when doing deep-water starts.  Good stuff for beginners...
