so im looking to upgrade my compressor and dont really know what to buy :banghead: ??? i guess the goal is to be able to run my d/a sander with out having to stop and wait for it to build up pressure.
ive been looking around and dont understand single or dual stage ??? single or three phase :-[ ???
i can get 220v from my house to the garage because its wired for a 220 stove that i dont have.
i was looking at these but dont want to lay down all that scratch if im not going to be happy.

Almost all residential electrical panels are single phase, so you need single phase 208-240 volt.
The difference between the two voltages is how the transformer is wound and we'll call it irrelevent for now...
I would recommend a two stage compressor wit the larges tank you can fit in the area you'll be putting it in...(like 80-100 gallon).
Two stage means exactly what it sounds like, the air goes in one cylinder, then right into another then to the tank, so stage one gets the pressure to say 60 PSI, then the second stage (smaller cylinder) bumps that to say 120 PSI.
I would also recommend an iron cylinder pump. (as apposed to aluminum).
Otherwise it does it in one shot and makes more heat and noise (less efficient too) and typically need to spin a lot faster.
To run a DA, you will need 6 or more horsepower, FWIW I bought a top of the line Ingersoll Rand 6"DA and it uses way less air (like 50%) than my 6"Chicago Pneumatic deal (el Cheapo) so sometimes you really do get what you pay for.
Let me know what you decide, may be able to find you the deal of a lifetime (I am a service tech for a very large mechanical contractor)

thank you glen ;) now i understand a little better ;) so im thinking somthing like the 2nd one in the link. dont know if i want an 80 gallon tank in my garage ??? i will have to see one in person so i can get a grasp on how big it really is.

If you go vertical like that one, you would have a hard time telling the difference standing next to them (like 6" in diameter bigger) to go 80 from 60...FWIW IR is pretty pricey, I have a Speed Air and a Campbell Hausfeld, I think they were both under $500ea. new, one 6HP and one 8HP.

This thing had 3550 hours on the hourmeter and I sold it for $500.
120 Gal 30 horse oil less.
(three phase though...)
