My wife was complaining about pain late night/early morning on tuesday. We thought it was just the usual pains associated with being pregnant. So I told her to do a couple moves that are supposed to help. Shortly after she yells from the bathroom that theres blood. We call the doctor and head off to the hospital. Once admitted she gets treated for being dehydrated and gets checked up on. Nothing too out of the normal baby seems fine, etc. They continue with fluids and then start to take blood. My wife gets back from the bathroom and lays back down. A nurse comes in saying the babys heart rate is low and tries adjusting her monitor thats strapped her to belly. In about the blink of an eye she yells out "CODE GREEN!" and about 50 nurses run in, adjust my wife and whisk her out of the room. Emergency c-section, deliver the baby. I kid you not, they would put a nascar pit crew to shame. I blinked and my wife was gone and I was in the room by myself... hoping that I didnt lose them both. We found out that the placenta had detatched and was bleeding within itself so between that and drawing blood, my wifes blood levels were dangerously low.
Valerie 32 weeks, 6 days. 4 lbs 10 oz.

Right now everything seems fine with the exception of her lungs. Shes not oxygenating properly so they have her on a pulsing breathing machine, but they were able to dial her assisted oxygen back to 21% which is ambient oxygen levels... but its still forcing air into her lungs. In doing that they have to sedate her to keep her calm and not to to fight and breathe on her own. Which is tough for mom because she cant talk to her or be near her and she picks up on her scent and sound and gets excited and heart rates increase. Based on the tests tomorrow they might take her off that and just use a normal respirator and make her breathe on her own....
I havent told my wife... but I just feel helpless. It was one of my biggest fears that my child have any type of complication. Just trying to stay strong and support her through this. Between the stress and her recovery she needs me to be there and get all the information to relay to family and friends.
Just hoping for the best.

Best thoughts your way buddy.
FWIW, my wife was born premature and is a major PITA to this day.
I was born with under developed lungs (aka blue baby) and I am here today to tell you that in a weird way, what you are going through right now is pretty much normal for us. BTW I can hold my breath for over two minutes at rest.
Give mama a kiss on the head and tell her everything is great.
Stay positive.

so today we got some decent news... as stated previously they've added support for her breathing and today they've slowly started removing it and shes been responding well. hopefully tonight or tomorrow they will remove the breathing machine, shes already at the lowest setting on the sedative, and her blood pressure is good. she will be on the cpap machine but its just adding very slight pressure to help with breathing. we are able to get some "touching time" but we have to make it quick as she gets stimulated and her blood pressure starts to rise.

shes making leaps and bounds of progress. still has breathing tube but on normal respirator. that should come out soon. late today or tomorrow. then she will go to a canula and proooobably not the CPAP. Which is a HUGE leap forward. I'm happy with slow steady steps and we're keeping her a little sedated just to ween her off SUPER slowly. No more dopamine to raise blood pressure. Shes starting on milk, soon the feeding tube for the IV will be removed. Her arterial line into her umbilical cord has been removed. BP sensor removed, etc. Shes getting stable. She is however getting a liiiitle bit of jaundice as shes been covered up for most of the stay here to keep her calm. So they're starting her on some UV to help break that down so she can process it normally and she'll get rid of her orangey skin tone. But she gets some cool sun shades to keep the light out of her eyes.

breathing tube is out and shes breathing on her own with just some assisted oxygen from a canula. no more breathing machines! awesome news for us. shes got the iv still in her thru the umb cord, but they're feeding her directly from moms milk thru a feeding tube.

slow and steady wins the race. we were transfered to the "pavillion" where basically babies go once they're stable and they grow and feed. we're at 4 bottle/breast feeds a day, 8 total feeds... going to move up to 6. At 8 feeds by bottle/breast for 2 days we go home.

the only advice i can give to anyone that has to go through this is to be strong, and be assertive with the doctors. if you allow them to go at their own pace, you'll be here for years. we went from 4 feedings only, to a full 8 within a matter of days after we leaned on the doctor. she was showing all cues that she wanted more food, steady weight gain, etc. the nurses unfortunately follow what the doctor says and he only came around once in a blue moon to read a chart. not that i have any clue wtf im talking about medically but you're the parent. if you want to hold your child, do it. if you want to feed your child, do it. if you dont like how a doctor or nurse is handling your child... get rid of em.

How about an update?
-
I'm late on this thread but 3.5 years ago my twins came month early he was 6 lbs she was 4.6 lbs. He had Brady-cardia had breathing tube feeding tube NICU for a month.
At 16 months they were both on Strider bikes
Today at 3.5 they are both over 30 lbs 3foot 4 and will tackle me at the blink of an eye. Goes bye fast and is the best thing to happen so enjoy and be glad theres only 1 could be worse you could have to feed 2 of them 1 hour each every 3 hours. THATS NO SLEEP!!! LOL
-
This turned out better than any of your project threads. Good to see your little one is doing well.
