Title: any chevy mechanics here???
Post by: 78centurian on February 06, 2010, 01:46:44 PM
i have a 97 s 10 with a 4.3 v6 and im having a hard time with the igniton in it.
its running at 25* btdc and that dosent seem right to me

i put a new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs in it and it has a miss in the #3 cylinder

i had to put a used distributor in it cuz the bolts that came with the new rotor were to long and broke the orininal one

could i be a tooth off? or is there something i might be doin wrong

it blows a code of p0303 and p1345

if anyone can help i would appericate it

Fault code P0303 is for cylinder 3 misfire detected

Fault code P1345 is for Crank/Cam position sensor correlation

"if VCM sets DTC P1345, it has determined that the distributor is installed incorrectly or a mechanical malfunction in engine has occurred"  (stolen from Mitchell on Demand)  ;D

I would start with verifying TDC and reinstall the distributor.

I was not able to find anything showing a timing mark on the front of the engine after 1995.  Hopefully what I did find will help.

1.  Rotate engine until cyl 1 is at TDC of compression stroke.  Align indent hold of distributor gear with white alignment line on lower part of distributor shaft housing.  Rotor should point to distributor cap hold down hole nearest to flat side of distributor body.

2.  Using a long screwdriver, align oil pump drive shaft with drive tab of distributor.  Slowly install distributor, ensuring that spark plug towers are perpendicular to center line of engine.

3.  When fully seated, rotor should be aligned with pointer cast into distributor body (pointer is marked with a "6" to indicate distributor is for a 6-cylinder engine).  If rotor is not aligned within a few degrees of pointer, remove distributor and return to step 1.

Good luck.

If i remember correctly those engines with the tbi need the timing set at 0* with the spout connector disconnected. The computer does all the advancing etc.

When there is a computer involved...I'm no help. Fwiw, check the vacuum advance can...

the advance is controlled by the computer

so i got the timing all figured out but it still sounds like it has a dead hole....

im thinking either crank shaft sensor or cam shaft sensor.....whats your guys thought?

Not likely a sensor, --possibly-- a tooth missing/damaged on the reluctor for one of them.

Don't overlook a bad plug, plug wire or vacuum leak for the p0303. Also consider a possible valve train issue. Have you done a compression test?. Check all the injectors with a stethescope. Good one will have a sharp "click". Bad ones usually have more of a dull "thud".

Most any problem causing a misfire will eventually start setting other codes as well such as a P0171-system lean malfunction as a result of the oxygen passing through the cylinder unused.
