Title: Anybody know anything about a Plott Hound?
Post by: GT Jets on January 19, 2014, 11:13:27 PM
I lost my Yellow Lab a while back and miss her terribly. I have a friend that needs to find a new home for their Plott hound, he is about 1-1/2 years old, really mellow and healthy.

I only know what I have read about these dogs, he seems really cool and friendly, but only got to spend about 30 minutes with him.

Looking for some insight, I have only had Spaniels and Labs, never a sniffer dog...

Thanks guys.

I think it is the official state dog of North Carolina? My daughter has one. He is a male. Very gentle with my girl. Excellent protector. I have no complaints. Their coloring is kind of like that of a calico cat. Pretty cool. That's all I have on the subject.

Funny you should mention the coat coloring. The thing my wife likes best about him is the really short hair and the colors look just like my sons Calico cat Gizmo.

I am supposed to go pick him up on Thursday for a trial weekend.

Thanks for the insight.

Kind if cool looking. Going to take him to the lake on Saturday to see what he thinks of water.

The people that have him now have never had him near water. They have only had him since April and they are having issues with the other dogs in the household.

Well,

I have to say, he has been here since Thursday night and he is so cool....

Loves to walk, he is a little nervous and seems bored because he is the only dog in this house, he came from a house with 5... :screwy:

He is super clean, super quiet, sleeps through the night and loves to snuggle, he's a keeper.

Going to the lake tomorrow and see what he does around water.. ;)

My Mom adopted one about 2 years ago, she is great around kids, LOVES the water, great protector (big deep bark), absolutely love to cuddle on the couch, short hair very clean. Your gonna love him if you decide to keep hi (which it sounds like your going too) ;)

So, just an update...

This dude is pretty cool.. I went to Nacimiento reservoir on Saturday and brought Japser the dog with me...

I have not been able to get him in the water, although these guys are supposed to be somewhat water dogs/hunters.. Could be partially my fault, because the first water i took him to was the beach, but could not get him to go in the lake at all.

It was pretty warm in the afternoon, probably 92° and I walked the dog all over the place trying to get him good and hot, then I grabbed my lunch from the truck and went down by the water with the dog panting like crazy... I attempted to walk him into the water, but he was having none of it... Not used to this, because I had a Yellow Lab that you couldn't keep out of the water..

I finally forcibly pushed him into the water, he immediately came right back out, but didn't seem freaked out, so I just let him chill with just his feet in the water.. Sat down, started eating my lunch, then all of a sudden, he went chest deep into the lake and literally laid down in it....

WIN!!!! He sat and played in the water for about 20 minutes... Next step, swimming... Gotta pick him up a life jacket... I have an extra Lifeline patch, think it would be pretty cool...

He doesn't chase or fetch anything.

Complete polar opposite of my Lab.... I'm learning.

And I didn't throw him in... I pushed him.

From everything I have read and been told by some people who have three of them they range from about 55# to #80 pounds and can be bred to be thick (like a Pit Bull) or thinner (like a Greyhound) they have a lot of traits of a Rhody  Ridgeback.

Jasper tips the scales at a modest 60# and can jump up from a stand to about 5'.... It's crazy. He also loves to wrestle on the floor with people and has a very cautious gentle "bite" even though he has huge canines. I have yet to be scratched or bitten and we get pretty crazy LOL.

I guess when I went to Long Beach for the weekend, my wife said he cried every afternoon for about 2 hours... I felt bad.

 Great looking pup-
Here is my St. Benard, Tree Walking Coon Hound , Orso Corso, Wiener Dog. Terrrier mix- Has the hound howl as well! Yes I did have a DNA test done- lol
Loves the water now and can't say "River" out loud any more-
She is perfect for my lifestyle, since she is 110lbs, not much stamina and as you can see is wiped out after any king of exercise! HA!  :P
I did teach her to fetch pretty easily, better than chasing squirrels and getting in trouble.
