I have 76 Hallet Jet with a 455 Olds and Berkely Jet. I called over to champion marine in Canoga Park and got quoted $455 dollars for a tune up (not including parts e.i spark plugs, oil filter, oil etc) Im really new to all this and was wondering if anyone know of this place and if that is the going rate for service on Jet Boats. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't have the oil drain tube and they have to pull the motor to change the oil , that could be way the quote was soo high.
-
They dont have to pull the engine to drain the oil, I have an oil drain tube.. So where does that leave me?
-
Go to Lowe's and buy a vacuum pump. Change it yourself if you have a drain tube. Plugs are easy and check your cap and rotor etc. All easy to do at home with basic tools. $455 seems way high to me unless other work is being done.
Do they charge by the cu. inch??
-
If the motor does not need to come out , I dont see why it would be soo high!

Because people who don't know and people that don't have anyone to ask will pay it. ;) I't easier doing a tune-up on your boat than it is on your old Chevelle or Mustang.
-
better off doing it yourself, that way you also learn what is going on with your boat, it will help in the long run, if you have a problem at the river/lake.
-
And if you have any problems there is always someone here to give you more than enough information to get you fixed up >:D ;D
Basic tune-up is easy, just replace existing parts with good quality parts and if you need help checking timing or something like that just ask, someone from here will normally help.
-
Ditto comments above; do it yourself; should take less than an hour.
- oil
- plugs
- rotor
- maybe distr cap
- maybe new plug wires
Did I forget anything?
-
When replacing your wires . Swap them one at a time . So you dont get your firing order all schlock fuked .

timing, carb settings, critical nuts and bolts (tightness) i.e engine mounts, jet, exhaust etc, check for leaks.

Canoga you say, I'll tell you what. You bring your boat down to Santa Clarita on Friday night bring maybe $100 total for parts (probably only use $30-50) and we'll set you all up. I won't charge you anything but with the money you save you can take the boat to Castaic on Sunday morning with us...
-
What is the history of the boat? Has it been setting a long time?
Was rebuilding carburetors included in the $455 labor estimate?
If its been setting, I would recommend going through the carbs just to be sure you don't have any problems.

First of all.. I want to say THANK YOU to all the guys offering to help. I really and truly appreciate the offers. The boat hasn't been sitting at all. Its been a runner and is still running (for now :-) knock on wood. However, I just wanted to do a tune up as a preventative measure to help it keep running and keeping me on the water.
A buddy of mine is going to spend the day with me on Sat and go through the whole thing and show me how to "Get er DONE"
As far as this Sunday.. I dont think I will make it. BUT YOU CAN DEFINETLY COUNT ME IN for NEXT WEEKEND AT CASTAIC.
On another note... How do you get those karma things assigned to your guys profiles???
THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE OFFERS. I truly feel like I'm not alone in my Jet Boating Adventures. This is proving to be a GREAT site with a bunch of really cool peops...

Thats easy, keep the jet. I don't want to have to flip you off like I do the other wake boats out there causing huge wakes at 15mph.
Dang, that really pisses me off! ;D
-
How can a person ever be happy with a boat that can only go 45mph and can't take chop aany better than a flatty?

Easy answer to that one... Current boat = seating for 4 girls...
Nautique = seating for 14 girls....
Starting to add up a little??? lol, you guys will see what I mean on Sunday at Castaic.
