Title: Anyone tow with a V6?
Post by: Handi-Crack on June 05, 2014, 05:43:48 PM
So been looking at trucks but I live in the hills and not a lot of room to back the boat into the drive way. I have a 95 F150 extra cab standard bed just to give a size idea. Been wanting a JK for awhile now but wondering how a v6 will tow a 18 foot jet.

So anyone that is who could give me info that would be great

Thanks

I'd stay away from a 6 cylinder unless it's a Cummins!

My wife has a JK unlimited Rubi and I've towed my 16' whaler with it and we got it there but it wasn't fun. The 6 cylinder just wasn't enough, not for me anyways and the breaking was a little sketchy at times (no breaks on the trailer). I also had an '06 Tacoma with the V6 and at that time I was towing a Mastercraft Prostar 190. Took it to the river a few times with that truck and the hills sucked.

Rolling this thing now and it doesn't even know it's got anything back there...

6 Cylinder will do just fine on a 18ft...i had a 2006 1500 chevy 6 cylinder believe it or not and she towed fine from Bellflower all the way to parker...crappy gas milage cause of lack of power but fine. Currently tow my boat with a 2009 3500 chevy dually (modified) can't even feel the damn boat and I get 19mpg all the way there and back. Night and day difference.

I towed my 18 ft Horizon to the lake and river several times with 2 different Toyota trucks back in the 80's.  One was 2WD and one was 4x4, both manual trans rigs.  Never got hot and handled Chiriaco grade with no drama.  Honestly, I was much more nervous about having to panic brake for something more than and problems with not enough power.   Trips with the boat just required a bit more patience.

We are towing with a 2012 Rav4. It has a 3.5 v6 that's putting out about 375 lb ft of torque. Full size spare, awd, 5 speed auto. No issues, plenty of power. 20 mpg towing. Pulling a 21' daycruiser.

I know there's a lot of V6's that can do the job but I'll continue to try and steer you away from a JK if you plan to tow with it. My Rubicon is only rated at 3500 lbs. towing and I'm telling you that's pushing it. Every manufacturer makes a bitchen' V6 that's capable but the combination in the JK isn't set up for towing. I'd avoid it if you plan on it being your tow vehicle.

In the next year or two we're going to have so many awesome options. Dodge has already brought out their V6 turbo diesel in their 1500 and Grand Cherokee. My parents have the new Grand Cherokee and it's badass but we had to lecture my mom for a couple weeks to make sure she knew to only use the green handled pump at the gas station. I hear both Toyota and Nissan will have an inline 5 cylinder cummins in their half ton trucks. We love our jeep but for your purposes I think there's better options.

Tow my Tahiti everywhere with my 98 4Runner. Every weekend to the lake, been out to Laughlin, Cottonwood and heading out to Parker/Lake Martinez next month. Only part that sucks is any huge long grades but I just take it easy and it does just fine. Nice having a small tow setup at times since it's so maneuverable.

Oh yeah, has 280,000 miles and still runs like a champ.

What about a 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo V6? I believe it's rated for 5k lbs. I'm thinking about picking up a 19ft Cheetah or 20ft Spectra and was curious if anyone has towed with a GC?

Most V6's will tow a 18' jet boat until it hits a long steep grade and you may end up in the right lane with the big dogs the real problem will be the vehicle housing the little v6's ability to stop an 18' jet boat.

WTF?  Never heard of a V6?

We used to tow a 16ft outboard with an '86 VW bus...plenty of trips over the grapevine to bass lake and plenty of trips to the river...slowly lol.

I towed my white jet bote with a 2005 Tacoma V6 and had no problem holding 75-80 in 6th up the grade out of Indio...had a Stoptech brake kit so stopping was no problem.  We also tow with the wife's '96 4runner v6 with 240K on it without a problem.  My '97 c1500 tows better than the 4 runner, but not as good as my Tacoma did.  I've also towed the boat to the river with my '86 Toyota pickup...22RE 4 cylinder....didn't like the hills much, but did just fine.  If you're not in a hurry and you're not an idiot, you can tow a 19-21 foot boat safely with anything

Haha at towing with a jeep. They're the most useless SUVs for towing. 2k towing capacity. You can bring home a single jetski if you're lucky.

Get a v8...

I use to tow my flat w/ a v-6 s-10 and that thing hauled ass! Latest tow rig is my lady's Flex and it surprised the hell out a me when we towed our Carrera. Both v-6's are very torquey and as long as you keep em reved up they'll make power. W/ the 6 speed auto in the Flex I pulled it down to 4th and pulled the summit outta Indio at 65 w/ the AC on and the cruise control set, not even a hick up or a rise in temp.
