Title: Auto Transmission / Engine Oil Cooler Plumbing

Hi all,

This question is directed at those who do (relatively) heavy towing with their light (1-ton) trucks.

My truck is currently equipped with factory in-radiator oil cooler along with the typical factory in-radiator trans cooler combined with a small front mounted oil-to-air cooler.  I am getting ready to install my new engine / transmission along with an upgraded cooling system.  My questions are as follows:

First, I have heard two schools of thought regarding plumbing trans/engine oil coolers.  1.)  Plumb both the factory style in-radiator cooler and the oil-to-air in series.  2.)  Omit the factory style in-radiator cooler and run only an oil-to-air cooler.  Which do you prefer and why?

Second, what are your thoughts on installing cooling fans on the oil-to-air coolers?  Will fans make any difference to oil temps at towing speeds?

My transmission buddy at TCI says from the transmission to the air side cooler then to the OEM radiator cooler. Basically it gets the fluid "up" to temp when its cold and the air one adds capacity.

I did this on my P30 Chassis motor home and the temperature is seldom above 190*f on the transmission temp gauge.

Works like a champ.

FWIW, you can get the temperature too cold contrary to popular belief.

This is pretty much my original plan.  Others have planted the seeds of doubt though.  Do you find that the trans takes much longer to come up to temp than the engine?

Bill over at TCI told me that if the transmission runs too cold, it is hard on the pump assembly, at the time we were talking Turbohydramatic 400. We installed hardened pump rings and opened up the oil return ports to minimize foaming.

In the motor home, the temp follows the engine temp on warm up and seems to stay at about 10 degrees warmer than the water temp. This is a 400+HP fuel injected 454 and the motor home tips the scales at a pretty svelte 18,000 pounds, so not real heavy and plenty of HP.

It was driven across Montana a few years ago and according to the GPS, went across the plains at over 90MPH.....  :screwy:

Putting the air side cooler first is the way I have always done it, never had one get hot.

These are the oil coolers that I am planning on running.  The effective cooling surface area is 8-1/2 inches by 11 inches.  The engine oil cooler will get -10 lines.  My transmission shop suggested -8 line for the trans cooler.  I am concerned about the neck-down at the in-radiator cooler to -5.  Any recommendations or thoughts on this?

I run 2 of them on my dually.
Nothing thru the radiator cooler.
Temp stays @ 140* to 180*, even when its 115*+ out
towing a 12-13k 5'er

Just make sure you install the coolers right against the radiator other wise you'll kill that area of radiator for cooling. It creates a vacuum in that area behind the cooler.  Also run them in series radiator-cooler-trans. The fan won't be needed as long as cooler is against the radiator/ac condenser.

Series (trans to cooler 'A' then to cooler 'B' then to trans) think of it as a 15" x 11" cooler
Mine are ~8" behind the bumper, at an angle, between the frame rails. (still forward & belowof the radiator.
a trans without a locking torque converter (th400, C6, etc) produce WAY more heat than locking ones. I have an E4OD/7.3

Within a 1/4 inch those little foam pads are ok. Anything more will create a vacuum.
