Motherfukcer!!!!!     On my way to the ER to get the acid out of my eyes and the gash on my forehead looked at, BTW my head was about 6" from the battery when this happened. :sly:

I'm good. More of a scare than anything, and the forehead gash. On a positive note, I just timed the boat. Finally.

Holy crap Skip, I thought only I did shit like that, I had a computerer controlled alternator in a Dodge car I was working on flip out and full field the alternator while I had a timing light on the motor, the alternator made this knarly ass whine and blew the battery to shit, lets just say a change of shorts was in order, not only because I shit myself, but I had acid all over me..

Glad to hear your OK bro...

safety lesson for all board members

Batteries give off hydrogen and oxygen at all times, heat makes internal valves open to allow the battery to off-gas...I work at Napa part time...

Glad you are OK Skip

I think everyone who works on cars and boats and stuff should at least see the results of a battery when they go off.

What about hooking up a charger, I usually get a spark. I wouldn't stress about it but my x-bro in law popped the hood in his 56 chevy and his(bat.) went off for no apparent reason. Btw glad your o.k.

Thanks, as for the charger, my old man taught me to hook the terminals up BEFORE you plug the charger in, then to unplug before removing the terminals.  From what I found on Google, those batteries have more than their share of issues, one more reason for me to not shop @ Wal Mart.

Got an American Made 750CCA marine battery from AutoZoo for $70.

Definately plug the charger in AFTER hooking up the cables.

And thats why they say hook up the ground cable to something far away from the battery - to minimize a spark igniting fumes.

this one time i bought a duralast gold "auto zone" battery...well the gold batts are a 3 year warranty battery...anyway the battery went out in 2 years and 11 months not a single problem with them replacing it...in the vegas desert 3 years on a batt is pretty damn good! back on topic you could have taken that everstart back to wally world and if the sticker on it was within the 2 years they would have replaced it no questions asked!

Exploding batteries are usually not the fault of the battery.  The main dangers are overcharging and heat which causes accelerated electrolysis, heat and gasses.  And any heat source close to the battery will also cause accelerated electrolysis and gasses (Skip's case).  Have you ever heard your battery bubbling or hissing?  That is a problem.  Look at the battery case, if the sides are bulging, that could be a problem.  If it is leaking, that's bad.
I work part time at NAPA, and all of our batteries are made by Exide.  Almost ALL of our car batteries are 75 month warranty/18 month free replacement, some are 84/24.  You are not gonna get a NAPA marine battery or even a car battery for $70 though...but you get what you pay for.
You should see some of the batteries I bring in for cores...scary.
