She fell and hurt herself in her house, there was brain damage to the left side of her temporal cortex which controls the higher functions including speech and etc. The good news is she's talking to my brother, sister and I. We're really hopeful for a full recovery but no idea how far she'll get. I just hope that I can get her home and give her one more ride in the float. I think this will be a pretty lean season in terms of river trips. If she's able it would be really cool to get a bunch of people out to the Blythe area to show some support, obviously not a scjb sponsored event but it would great if something could happen, I'll put something in the lower river forum for the homies if this becomes a possibility. So keep an eye open for anything in that forum if you're interested in a SoCal island meet up with my mom and give her some love.

It's a tough time and well, I'm not sure what else to do at this point. Just keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully things take a turn for the better.

Sorry to hear about your mom falling. Hopefully it's not anything too serious. Payers and thoughts coming your way and if we can make the trip we will. I lost my mom last year and I still catch myself reaching for the phone to call her. That's cool your mom willing to go boating with you. Cherish those times. I remember I took my mom for a ride in my old 79' BBC powered Malibu with a four speed and nitrous. I'll never forget the look on her face after going through the gears....priceless!!!

Hey guys, thanks for the happy wishes. Mom is recovering, albeit slowly.  She's talking and spent about an hour or so sitting in a wheelchair today. She knows my sister and brother but sadly doesn't really remember me or her own name. The fact she's doing that stuff is a really positive sign. The asshole trauma neurologist told us a "5% chance of recovery" and she's making that guy look like a quack. She's off the oxygen and that means the trach can come out at the end of the week. Theres obviously some brain damage but she can rehab and learn stuff again. I'm really hopeful she can come home and not to nursing home. She is in physical, occupational and speech therapy. Things are looking up so far, she's going to have a long hard road ahead, but, woohoo I'm feeling really positive.

By the way, she grew up water skiing and her and my pops were the reason I'm boating myself and taught me everything I know about it. We were McIntyre regulars for years and years when I was a kid. After my dad died we stopped going for around 15 or so years because I just didn't pull the boat out of the garage. I decided that is was time to start up again and ran into UncleBobby and 5150Whiteboy and they told me about this site. Since then I've made some more pals here and look forward to making more. We'll see what happens when my mom is ready for something to be done, it might be next season might be never.

Ben,
I feel for you.
My 93 year old mother fell and broke her hip and wrist back in February.  She is back in N. Carolina.  Lil sis says she is doing good considering.
God bless your mother.  I pray for a rapid and full recovery.
Dave

Thanks guys, there's a long and rough road ahead for my mom.The last few days she's been really out of it, sleeping all day and such. I shook her bed and made her wake up today and when I asked her what her name was she said "You know damn well who I am" but did tell me her name. I guess I'll just have to be more aggressive with trying to force her to recover from this. It's still a big waiting game to see how far she goes.

I don't know her but with my grandmother. That would be a normal response for waking her up. Sounds like she's on the right track. Best wishes ben

Prayers for your mom and family at this time man. My grandmother fell last year and ended up having a stroke after that. She has partial paralysis on her left side which effects her speech. The doctors said she would most likely never walk and be in a wheel chair. Well she walks just fine and her speech is a lot better. Not 100% but still good enough to carry a conversation.

Also my fiancé s aunt had the samething happen to her and she can't walk talk or raise her hands but she is a positive person and loves to laugh. Doctors told her she probably wouldn't last much longer. That was a year ago. Just keep positive man and she will have a speedy recovery and be at the river in no time

Mom was out of it because she had a minor infection but she's fought that off. She was up the entire time I was with her the day before yesterday, but, yesterday after physical therapy and visits from my sister and my moms grandson and his mom she was worn out. She still managed to smile and say I love you in the fleeting moments she was awake. So, just another day on the long road to recovery.

What's really fucked up is the lady that's my mom's neighbor hasn had one single visitor the entire time I've been there and when I'm talking to my mom she often answers me because I have to talk loud because ears no work so good and etc. What kind of pile of shit family leaves someone alone in the time of their greatest need? Seriously, shame on those people. I overheard the lady who I suppose is a grand daughter or maybe daughter of the person complaining that she had to drive all the way from Lakeside to University City to see her. Seriously. What the fuck? Where are your priorities? I'm doing more for your families recovery then you are simply by talking to my mom.

I hear you on that one. It's pretty messed up not to be there for your family what ever it takes to get there is what you just have to do. When my Mom got sick before she passed. She was in Nebraska and I was in Az without hesitation dropped everything and drove straight through(21hrs) to be by her side. It's just what you have to do as children. It's just the way it's supposed to be.  Keep doing what you're doing and have no regrets.
Thoughts & prayers coming from the Maloney's

Well, we had a setback, she transitioned from a long term acute care place to a skilled nursing facility, and the skill-less nursing facility fucked up, let her pull out her feeding tube, she aspirated, got an infection and then they didn't put the tube back in for like 3 days, now were back in intensive care. Holy crap health care is a joke in this place. I sure am glad the nObama is going to fix it all by flooding it with people that don't have the money to pay for it....oh wait... ::)

Bjaming .. sorry to hear the bad news.
Speaking from experience, keep a close eye on those places. Most that work their are not actual nurses, let alone pay attention to what they're doing. I just went thru the same mess with my pops. He was at a skilled nursing facility in Riverside. Worst part was the meds. Either they didn't give me when they were supposed to or gave to much when they did. Not trying to scare you, just ask questions when you visit, keep them on their toes

Yeah I hear that man, were going to have some special contractual exhibits put into the legal agreement we have with the place outlining specialized care and other things we want done. My brother, sister and I are basically with her 14 or so hours a day to keep an eye on her. When she transferred I had to travel for a few days and my sister had to return home up north to deal with job/kid stuff. The result was my brother being alone in town with no backup to keep an eye on her. Just really bad timing all around. Needless to say she won't be going back there and we're going to fight tooth and nail to keep her quality of healthcare as high as possible. Time to battle with the state and the insurance agencies I guess.

There is some good news, she's back off the breathing tube and when I was there yesterday she was trying to throw her pillows out of the bed so she could get up and go home. She's way more alert and all around better since she's in an actual hospital now and under skilled care by experienced RN's. I've been doing some PT with her, moving arms, range of motion type stuff I think that's helping a bit.  I really need to go to the river man...once she's transferred and in a good place I'll be able to take a sanity break and hit the beaches.
