Heat treating

Anyone know how to do it or is this one of them deals I should let a proffesional bend me over on .

Seriously, I'm starting to feel like I need to carry around a sharp popsicle stick to scrape and pick the shit off my shoes everytime I step in it  :-\

As long as you guys are enjoying it, I'll just go with the flow  ;)

So does anyone have any info.
Mainly, is it too dangerous to do at home, or relativly easy.
I dont want to hurt myself or someone else trying to make something safer .

in all honesty omar im gonna half to say that you should stick with a proffesional on this....definately doesnt look like a garage task, but what is it that you are trying to heat treat...type of metal?

I don't think you have the proper oven (kiln) to reach the temps needed to properly heat/cool/heat/cool the steel. I'm not even sure you'll be able to find a foundry local to you.

What are you treating?
Why?

Thats pretty much what I figured.

when doing chizzels or tools what nots ive used ford atf and have good long lasting tips  :thumbup:

I have used old motor oil the carbon in the old  oil is what does it  or something like that you make that fccker red hot orange pill hot then putt it in oil let cool  1 hour then do it again we do this with our welding tool  home made that is

HT is a broad term that covers many different things: modifying an alloy to increase it's strength, softening (annealing) an alloy to remove or reduce internal stresses, case or through hardening an alloy to make it more wear or impact resistant, or creating a tough core material with a hard, brittle crust.

For real basic uses, people can do "home-style" HT techniques like quench and temper with oil, water or air. You could probably anneal an alloy at home if you had the right heat source and could control time and temperature. This is OK for a plow or a chisel or shovel or something - I've done it myself.

But if you want to modify a part that goes inside any kind of performance machinery - boat, car, airplane, surgical device, spaceship - then use a professional HT facility. We use several in the LA area. Accurate Steel Treating is good. www.accuratesteeltreating.com

Omar, My lil brother is a master mold maker, and I'm gonna PM his number to you. If anyone knows the heat treating or heat tranfer qualities of any stell, it's him. Tell him what you're doing, and how hard you need it to be (Another siggy line, I see this coming), and he can help you. Might be able to do it for you, pro-quoti....
