1977 Tahiti 21 Day Cruiser
« on: March 29, 2010, 03:44:24 PM »
Look at buying on and want to know more about these boats. Are they good solid hulls? What are they worth in decent shape? Thank you for any help. I have new boats for along time and now I am going back to the basics, I have always wanted a day cruiser.

Wow tough day for the new guys.  Unfortunately I can't help you with this question.   Just off the top of my head I would say, look for obvious damage and/or repairs.  Check for soft spots in the floor and stringers (beams running front to back on either side of the centerline) assuming there is not a flat floor.
My best advice is to take it out to the lake and run it although I have not done that with either of mine.   Stupid of me but I have been lucky I guess.  Be sure to check the trailer equally well for serious rust damage/weakness and see that the boards are in good shape.   There is at least one guy here who live in Norco, maybe hook up with him.
Ray and Nordie must be working today cuz normally they have something to say about everything.   Welcome to the site mdrnrod, hope you stay awhile.

Thanks for your help. Went and looked at it and the original owner took exceptional care of it. Fired right up. It has a flat floor hard to see stringers but exterior of the boat look really nice. Did notice the railing around bow as cracked in alot of areas where it mounts to bow don't know if I can buy of new one or I will just have it rewelded and powdered coated white. The trailer has surface rust and needs a repaint but looks good. The price is right he will take $1,600 for it.

with the flat floor it might just be a 1/4 stringer boat...i always like to bounce on the floors to see if it is solid....it will tell you exactly what you will be getting into...9 times out of 2 there is foam underneath the floor and it gets water logged, and makes fowl smells, and adds a ton of weight! cracks in older boats is very very common especially in mounting places! firing right up is a plus...what kind of motor and jet pump some motors and pumps are more desireable then others...there's alot of things to take into consideration when purchasing a boat!

X2   Don't think I've ever seen a 21' Tahiti before. If it has the jump seats beside the motor box, that is where the floor will probably go bad first. Second thing on the foam and old boats. If it ever, or does, have fuel leaks, that stuff soaks all of that up too. Found out the hard way on that!

tahiti's were one of the mass production boats of the time, still many around. the only thing that would concern me is what the guys have already said.

on a side note, when it comes to resale value they dont seem to hold because of the mass production. jmo ???

the price seems rite, but without pics its hard to tell.

Thanks Ray. It runs really good and did not find any stress cracks on outside of gel coat anywhere.
