So I am in Michigan on my friends pontoon. It has a mercury thunderbolt 500. its a 50hp outboard. anyway we ran over a rope and it screwed up the prop. So we limped the boat home. it ran fine all the way home just would not go over idle speed or the prop would start slipping. so we get home and put on another used prop that we had. after swapping the prop the boat wont turn over. it seems to click the starter soleinoid but the starter wont turn or make a sound. I have to think it is the neutrual safety switch but I have played with that for about an hour and cant get it to work. I bumped the starter across the solenoid and the motor turns like a boss but wont fire. I checked all the fuses i could find and they all seem fine.
so basicly we changed the prop and now the boat wont start. I am pretty good at fixing things but i cant seem to get power to the starter.
any suggestions

Not real sure on that motor but some of them have a tilt switch, motor wont start/run when its trimmed up to far. Should be a small mercury type switch with a yellow or yellow/black wire on it. It should not show ground on that wire when the key is on
It should start and run if you jump the starter as long as the key is on and theres no kill switch/safety switch. Heck it should start and run if you unplug it from the boat as long as theres fuel in the carbs. Starter solenoid works just like a normal motor, big power wire from the batt, big wire to the starter, ground on one of the small terminals and power from the key (start position) on the other small terminal.

Spin the prop. If it spin free neutrual. Spray carb clear in the carb and up the start.if it doesn't start,then pull the spark plug. Check for spark........

not sure how it happend. but when we sucked that rope around the prop. the starter solenoid went bad at the same time. so we replaced the 50$ part and the boat is rockin again.
