In lue of the phone call I got today (more on that later, im sure) I thought that we all should take some time once again to go over all the systems on your boats, trailers, tow rigs and make sure that everything is safe, not only for you but also your friends and family that will join you on your toys!

I know that this has been said in other threads but I thought I would start another to remind everyone who is going out with the boats this summer.

Heard the news as well...glad to hear everyone is ok...good idea on taking a once over on everything concerning safety...as well as making sure all required equipment is in the boat!

I dont think ray is going to be on here for tonight considering he just told me is taking the Moo boat and an empty trailer home and then going out to get shitfaced! So I will let the cat out of the bag...

After making several trips in the Blue Meanie hauling people and camping gear to a beach at the lake. Rays brother took the boat to the marina to get fuel. On the way back he hit a wake and then there was an explosion from the left rear of the boat. A fire followed and the boat burnt to the water line.

No one was hurt, picked up by another boat.

Just a great reminder to look over your toys and to take the time to make sure your trip is as safe as possible.

I am sure Ray will fill everyone in with more details.

Sorry to hear about the loss of a boat, but glad to hear nobody was seriously injured.

We all need to be very aware of any problems with our boats and that something like this can happen to any one of us.

Yeah, Jeremy pretty much told the story, and that's pretty much how it happened so I'm told. Someone there recorded a video of it burning and then sinking (I guess it's a little over 45 minutes or so). By the time I saw it it was down to below the waterline, still burning. Didn't see it go down, but I guess the DVD the guy's sending me shows that part, lol.

Someone sent my brother a picture in his e-mail box (He hasn't forwarded it to me yet) with the heading, 'Dude, check out what happened at Saguaro, lol.

Yeah, VERY fortunate noone was hurt, was just filled up with 40 gallons!

Another thing to remember is if some else is operating your boat, make sure they know where the fire extinguisher is! (That wouldn't have hepled in this case, the boat was almost immediately consumed I'm told, but my brother couldn't find it mounted to the gunwall beside the engine cover, and had someone throw theirs to him, which went right into the lake about 10 feet short of him).

My best guess is a cracked fuel tank, somewhere low on the tank was leaking fuel. It had a bad gas smell after running it awhile that jeremy and Terry fixed (Leaking fuel lines at the carb), and that seemed to cure it. But yeah, I have run the boat all day and trailered it at dark with 1/4 tank in it.

We put it in yesterday full, ran about 5 trips across Saguaro lake, through the channel to a beach and it was on fumes. Shoulda taken note on that, but did find another cracked hose and loose clamp on the fuel pump, which I fixed before they went back to fill it up.

I'm going to assume that all that gas leaked out and prolly soaked into the foam under the floor. After filling it I guess they could smell a little gas, but assumed it was from just filling it.

But yeah, right at the channel entrance is where she exploded, burned, and sank. Dunno how deep, dunno if worth even trying to salvage anything from it, but the only thing left would be the flamed engine, pump and diverter (Being aluminum, dunno if that would even be salvageable). Water should be pretty deep there, I mean it's in the MIDDLE of the channel entrance from the main lake across from the marina.

Sherrifs dept hauled all the people and stuff in from the beach, as well as the 9 people I had on the Moo (Way overloaded, and just happened to be heading back to see what was taking so long. Another big boat flagged me down on the way, and then everyone jumped in the Moo and we went to see it).

Had the Moo tied to the dock for about an hour while they questioned my brother about the whole thing, so I sat on the dock with my feet holding the boat out from it so it wouldn't get beat up, pulling beer outta my cooler, lol. Deputy standing there too, laughing as I threw the empties in the boat!

I'll post the pic as soon as I get it at the end of my "Is there a 12 step program thread" on this boat, RIP, lol

Man, sorry about the boat. I have sunk a boat, seen several boat crashes, and have seen 2 boats burn, and there is NOTHING worse than helplessly watching a boat engulfed in fire. I'm thankful that no one was hurt. Hope you and your family can put this behind and not be soured on boating.

I am VERY thankful noone was hurt as well. The boat can be easily replaced, the 4 people on board can't!

Ray sorry to see your boat like that and thank god no one got hurt some one had to off almost been setting on where the fire started with 4 people in the boat. I remember that some
on here at one time said that old fiberglass tanks could not take this new fuel did this boat
have glass tanks and how old was the boat. I have seen some soft tanks in some of the boats that my son has junked, and my 1970 Sanger flat had glass tanks and has aluminum tanks now. I think ever one should check there tanks, and does any one no is it true a bout this fuel and fiber glass tanks.

Rays boat had 2 alum tanks.

You dont know how lucky I feel. 3 days prior to the fire, I had 3 others on this boat with me. One was sitting on the side of the motor where the fire started and one was sitting on the other side of the motor,  5 months pregnant!

Other then some redneck wiring for the guages, the lights and the mechanical gremlins it had (That Terry, Nordie and myself worked on) this boat ran great and strong.

I would NEVER put my friends or family on this boat if I thought for one instance that Rays boat was unsafe.

Me either. I'da never loaned it to you, or even parked it beside my house! (The neighbors house maybe, but not beside mine!)

I am truly blessed and thankful nothing happened to you guys with it, I couldn't live with that. And my brother Brett at least kept a pretty cool head about himself using the blowhorn and getting everyone outta the boat and onto another boat. (Even tho he didn't see the fire extinguisher, but from what I picked up on the posts on PB, some carry three and feel unsafe with that!).

Everyone wanted to ride the Moo that day, thankfully, otherwise it mighta had 8 people on the thing. So everyone was fighting over who got to ride the Moo next and didn't give a crap about the Blue boat except it could haul people and stuff to the beach like a truck!

It all ended OK, with lessons learned. I still have 1 good running boat (With a leaky oil pan, but we'll get that phucker fixed if it kills me and I gotta go to the extreme and pull the engine again), and all my friends and family alive and well.

I feel horrible that you guys worked so hard on the boat and did so much to have it go down in flames like that, but again, noone was hurt and they easily coulda been. This is a lesson I hope everyone takes to heart. The only non marine item on the boat was the carb, and I really don't think that had a role, it was still running when this all happened. I could be wrong. The new carb/intake combo that was slated to go on it (This week, in fact) was a Marine 850. I don't think any of that was involved. Josh and I have a theory, I hope I am able to recover what's left (new developments on that in the other thread), and maybe then have an answer or two. If nothing else, I'll have maybe a partial transom with a title like Glenn has! (Get the Flattie Terry, we may have an Idea)

I'm not sure about AZ, but I know in CA if your boat sinks in a body of freshwater used for drinking, you must retrieve it, and if the state EPA (or whoever) feels that you polluted the water, get ready to pay some hefty freaking fines.  It's not bad enough you lost the boat, but now you have to spend money to salvage something that is worthless. I'd be on the horn with the Marina, Fish & Game, everyone possible first thing Monday, trust me you don't want them to salvage it for you and bill you.

It'll be fine, like you said, will it matter in 5 years? no! Will it matter next week? no!

Musta been a famous event, it got posted over at PB by someone who saw it (I added to it) and I was told today it was in the Arizona Republic paper over the weekend. (If anyone has the article, I'd like to see it)

Talked to the Deputy Sherrif that wrote the report on the incident, and asked him if I HAD to retreive it and could they (SRP) fine me for hazmat issues involved. He laughed and said no to both questions. I feel a little releived there. My bud from work is planning a dive on the site Friday to see if we can retreive it ourselves. I guess he and his friends have all the equipment they need to do it. If that's the case, GREAT, lotsa parts!

i can't tell you how sorry we are about you'r loss. the woman and i are still dumbfounded, anytime ANYONE loses a boat it's not only devastating to them but also to the people around them .When i seen that pic, i didn't know who's boat it was but i had a feeling it belonged to someone here and it took our breath away.. Good luck with the recovery/salvage and stay strong my brotha.. ;)

WOW    I guess I am kinda late to the party here but there is nothing to say to make it any better.  Really glad that no one got hurt,and that the state won't be adding $$$ fines to further mess with you.  Good luck with the retrieval, it sounds like you have some real good and helpful friends and that is priceless.  Ray you are the only guy I know that actually needs to keep spare boats around, DAMN.

Let's hope Father's Day goes off trouble free for everyone !!!

WOW...I am a "newbie" from Georgia.  I dont know any of you guys besides a few replies on here.  If its not that hard, i would really like, and i think folks that have not seen pics of that boat, would like to see a thread about R.I.P. (that name of that boat) and everyone gives there good time stories they have had on that boat with pics.  just an idea, but i would love to see pics of the boat considering MOOOOOOOOOOOO is so dope and would love to see ypur other boat!!!

Anyway my man......So happy to hear no one was injured. It could have been worse and you have your other bad ass boat to give ALL your attention now.

Here's the link to the thread from when I bought it. Nearly all the pics I have of it are posted there I beleive. Only had it a couple of months though, lol. Kinda like a one night stand that went VERY bad, cept I took a real liking to the thing. We'll get another cruiser!

LOL Keith! Most of the parts I need for the Sub are already here. Just need to get off my ass and start on the thing. Would be nice to use that combo in the Hallet B-rad sent down here, though!

Thanks Steve, and Glasscutter! Couldn't have built the Moo without you guys and I know I'll be a PITA on these other two just the same. I've been having second thoughts that instead of buying another cruiser, why not convert the Yellow Sub to open bow? You have any more pics of the Blue Saguaro your FIL had you working on then sold 2Sav?

Edit: Maybe will still open the bow on the Saguaro, but been in contact off and on with this guy in Flag with a 70 Nordic 21 footer, BBC and brand new pump. Awaiting pictures!

Do not cut up that yellow boat for an open bow :screwy:  NO NO NO !!!!!!!!

It's too small , and uncomfortable and i think it destroys the boat.......... (My opinion)

Build it the way it is, cause it will be a bitchen ride :thumbup:
