Anyone got any tricks to syncronize 3 carbs.
« on: November 08, 2010, 08:44:24 AM »
I got a 1947 Chevy Fleetline I built a few years ago for a friends collection. Its going to auction at Keiht McCormick's in Palm Springs on the 19th and I never got this thing to run right with the 3 carbs. The motor is originally a 1953 Corvette Blue Flame 235 in line six. I personally didn't want to put it in the car but customers are always right.

You need to pick up a carb sync manometer...(Easy to build one on the cheap)...

The biggest issue with multiple carbs is making sure the linkage is dead on balls accurate... :sly:

The vacuum signal at the base of the carbs needs to be identical from #1 to #3....The vacuum signal is the best way to dial them in IMHO...

First set up the idle circuit, this is typically where the most noticeable problem is, it can cause lean popping, hesitation and sputtering, not to mention a rough ass idle...

You can use what's called a slack tube manometer, but it will need to be about 20' tall if you are going to use water for a measurement fluid because there are 13.5951001967 " of water in just one inch of mercury (hg)...This engine will idle at about 19-21"hg... :sly:

I recommend finding a digital vacuum gauge and using that to balance the idle....

Once the vacuum readings are equal at idle, only then can you accurately adjust out the fuel circuits to gain proper fuel mixture at idle..

After this stage of the game, the engine should run like a Swiss watch, the rest is tuning the accelerator adjustments and high speed jetting...

Good luck...BTW I have done literally hundreds of these, Blue Flame 6's, Tri Power, Six Packs and Strombergs, not to mention multiple carbureted outboards....

The hardest one I ever did was a Force outboard....Five cylinders and 3 carburetors....Do the math. :screwy:

Just to add....

When adjusting the idle fuel mix....Go from rich to lean....Meaning, adjust some eye burning fatness into the idle screws then turn them leaner until you get the distinctive fall off from being lean (this will be minor on a multi-carbed engine) then back it off about 2/3 of a turn, keep going from carb to carb about three times each until it "feels better", then go closed another 1/8 of a turn if it has an operating choke, otherwise your done....

The engine needs to be at a warm operating temp too, too cold and you will be rich when she warms up... :sly:

Good luck!

Thanks,  ;D

Here is a video of the car running last night, its probably not 100% right but tell me what you think. I need to find a manometer. [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krIrsLcZ5WI#]1947 Fleetline with 235 Corvette Blue Flame Motor Running]http://
