Shit, be careful
« on: July 25, 2008, 08:35:07 PM »
I'm gonna get on the soapbox for a second and say to wear your life jacket and please please be safe.

We lost a fellow Washington boater to a horrible crash and though he had all the gear on, we still lost him.  Yah, he was running a bit more of an extreme boat but it don't matter.  ALL of our old boats are fast enough to hurt or (God forbid) kill someone.

Please do me a favor and think about throwing a jacket on before heading out.  I'm pretty sure nobody's gonna bust your ass up for wearing a jacket.  Speaking personally here, I would love to see jackets more and I'll admit that I have not been good about this but have recently began listening to Jan (man I hate doing that) and purchased a Lifeline. It'll be on me all the time and if I ever post a picture of me running without it, please call me out.

I don't care if you all you guys can run a is phuckin innertube around you, it's better than nuthin.  For gods sake, PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!!! I don't wamt to hear someting has happened to any of you guys that have welcomed me into the SoCal gang though I don't belong.

Stepping off the soapbox now but still very sad at the loss of a fellow NW'r............shit, RIP Terry.......this sucks

That is a more than legitamate gripe . I too have been guilty of not wearing one in the past and you are as much a part of the "socal" gang (if not more) as anyone can be . Your message can not be stressed enough .

I just got ours out, cleaned and float tested em and tucked 'em in right beside the seats. Told the ole lady we need to start wearin e'm cuz we run over 80 quite a bit. Shit happens quick, be prepaired. One thing I remember my dad tellin me while learning to drive, "always expect the other drivers to do the craziest thing possible". Also, watch out for those red flags, people dont care where they drop their kids these days. If you see one, slow down,  spot the body in the water and raise your hand. Running a prop boat and having lost a friend this way I will shut it off if I cant see the person in the water, LOOK there may be more than one.

This is all good info and it all makes sense to be safe..

The woman and i will be wearing ours aswell,   Even more of a reason. you can't swim and hold a beer, but you can float and hold a couple :D

Several years ago, about 1979, lost a grandfather and four freinds in a boating accident, anyone wearing a life preserver survived a freak rogue wave leaving Santa Cruz harbor, boat simply did a quick roll and five people drown, yes, it happens that fast...

Wow, I kinda expected to get lit up on this subject but I'm thrilled to see that you all are thinking along the same lines I am.  These types of boats bring a level of risk that we accept but the least we can do is minimize it to the best of our ability.

Thanks so much for looking out for yourselves and continuing to make me feel welcome.......john

Just common sense Tom.....some of us have it an........

It's just terrible some people have to lose a child or friend to figure things out. One night we drove all the way up to Naci to find three bodies on the shore, two dead and working on one. A lady was pulling a skier looking back with no spotter. I believe it was an OB and went right over the top of a jet, prop marks all over the boat. the friend i lost was from San Jose, not sure what lake it was but he was a big guy and they were pulling him on a tube. When they lost him they turned around to find him and well you know the rest. They found him and he was too big to get into the boat, had to leave him to go get help.

Mine are always in the boat and are within grabbing reach.  Always tell myself that if going to go out and go fast will wear it but dont.

Add a kill TETHER to the list of safety items.......Every boat should have a string tied to the driver that kills the engine in the rare occasion the driver gets pitched out. All the race boats are required to have one, and they work........A boat that is dead in the water won't circle around and run over anyone, and a still boat is a lot easier to climb back into than one going down river on it's own, or one circling arounf d the people in the water.........Vest up, and tie off that tether.......................Ray

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
